Boxing News & Notes: 29 June, 2012

Boxing News – Updates 29th June – For: WBC will begin a good faith campaign, Wlodarczyk vs Palacios II, Clash of the Titans, Olympic style drug testing, Povetkin will not fight July 14

WBC will begin a good faith campaign - The president of the WBC Jose Sulaiman regret the current situation boxing is going through where champions have been involved with drug problems, power disputes between promoters and unacceptable behavior outside the ring. Due to these facts, the WBC will begin a campaign of good faith where it will try to make boxers, promoters and managers changer their minds on their behaviors to change the image of boxing in the world, for this, it will be proposed a fund for every boxer where there will be saved a little percentage of their incomes so they can have a good life after they retire from boxing.

Wlodarczyk vs Palacios II could be in September - Polish, WBC cruiserweight champion, Krzysztof Wlodarczyk will defend his crown against Puerto Rican Francisco “Wizard” Palacios, in a rematch that was ordered by the WBC and to be held on September 22nd in Poland. - The first fight was in April 2nd , 2011, where the local Wlodarczyk won a split decision victory in a controversial decision, the scores of the judges were 116-113 and 118-112 for the polish and 115-113 for the Puerto Rican.
Wlodarczyk has a record of 46-2-1, 33 KO’s, while Palacios is 21-1, 13 KO’s.

“Clash of the Titans,” Saturday in Lodz (Poland)- will be featuring fights of Roy Jones Jr vs. Pawel Glazewski, Jameel McCline vs. Artur Szpilka and Nate Campbell vs. Krzysztof Szot, will be available worldwide, outside Poland on www.boks.ipla.tv

Olympic style drug testing - WBO Super Bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire made news when he agreed to be the first professional boxer to undergo year round random Olympic style drug testing that will be administered by VADA (Voluntary Anti-Drug Association). - Most fighters now days have made random drug testing a prerequisite in order for a fight with them and an opponent to be possible. Donaire talking on BoxingScene’s official radio show The Boxing Lab, said: (about his opponents) - “Regardless if they do test positive, I will put my life and my waiver that I will fight that guy. And I will prove to the world that I’m still better even though that guy is on it. I mean to me, they’re not mandated to do a drug testing but I invite them to do it and I hope they do” - “For me I’m doing it because I owe it to my fans. That they’re supporting a guy who grew up being pushed down and let them know I made it happen because I work hard. I believe in myself and that anybody can make it happen if they work hard and be honest and do it the right way”. stated the Filipino Flash.

Povetkin will not fight July 14 - World Boxing Association (WBA) Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetkin will not be able to defend his title on July 14 in Hamburg. The fight night at the Alsterdorfer Sporthalle has been called off due to an injury sustained by the challenger Hasim Rahman. The number one WBA ranked heavyweight needed an operation to remove a cyst on his right hand and therefore is not able to fight Povetkin. To find a fitting replacement for a Heavyweight title shot in such a short space of time is unrealistic.

‘World Boxing Union’ Appoints New Vice President

The youngest son of heavyweight legend Joe Louis has been officially named Vice President of Operations of the World Boxing Union. Joe Louis Barrow II has stated that he looks forward to making the World Boxing Union a thriving championship organization again. “Since I have accepted this position I plan on making some important changes that I believe will not only revitalize this organization but the sport of boxing as well,” Barrow stated.

Joe Louis Barrow II, not to be confused with Joe Louis’s oldest son, Joe Louis Barrow Jr., is taking his position very seriously. “When my father was champion, he was the only champion. In the 70′s and 80′s when the sanctioning bodies started taking over, it was a bit difficult to figure out who was the real champion. Some fighters unified the titles and were recognized as the ‘Undisputed Champion.’

“That’s all fine and dandy, but today it is a little outrageous. Some organizations don’t want to do business with other organizations for a unification match. It’s despicable. It’s a circus. Organizations now have the world champion, the diamond champion, the super champion, and world champion emeritus. No wonder fight fans are crossing over to MMA. It was one thing to know who the WBA, WBC, and IBF champions were. Now we have to know who the WBA World champ is as well as who the WBA Super champ is. It’s frightening.”

Barrow is in the process of making a Board of Directors, which will include some familiar names in the sport and in politics. “I have Rocky Marciano’s nephew Lou Marciano Jr. coming on board. I plan to reach out to U.S. Senator John McCain as well. It’s about the fighters. If I have the support of legends like Larry Holmes, Eddie Mustapha Muhammad, Irish Micky Ward, Vinny Pazienza, Tommy Hearns and a handful of other boxing greats, the WBU has to be looked at seriously again.”

Barrow is talking about the 90s and the early part of this century when the WBU was based in England. The WBU was a respected organization at the time with champions like Ricky Hatton, Kevin Kelley, Micky Ward, Tommy Hearns, George Foreman and James Toney to name a few. After the death of WBU founder John W. Robinson the company was primarily just making champions in the UK. It eventually ran itself into the ground and was defunct for several years until a business group headed by Don “Moose” Lewis out of Atlanta bought the rights to the company. Since then the WBU has been in the rebuilding process.

Lewis is acting President while Joe Louis Barrow II is running the day to day operations. “We had some problems with the BBB of C when we came back. They originally refused to recognize the WBU in the UK. It’s funny, Charles Giles is the Chairman of the British Boxing Board of Control (BBB of C) and he is also the Vice-President of the WBC and the Vice-Chairman of the EBU. He doesn’t like the fact that the U.S. has taken over a former UK organization I imagine. We are trying to work on relations with them but this is what’s wrong with the sport. Questions need to be raised. Regardless the WBU has a rich history in boxing and we plan on continuing that in the future.”
