Strikeforce Results: Fedor vs Henderson

STRIKEFORCE: FEDOR VS HENDERSON was held Saturday, July 30, 2011, at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

In the main event, Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Dan “Hendo” Henderson put on an extra 2 pounds to move up to heavyweight at 207-pounds to take on the MMA legend Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko. In MMA, the heavyweight division ranges from 206 to 265 pounds. Fedor weighed in at 223 pounds, however, the fighters appeared very close in size.

Henderson (28-8, 3-1 SF) brought a violent end to a brief but violent fight, as he stopped the Russian icon on first-round punches. A series of right hands from the two-time Olympian and former two-division Pride champion polished off Emelianenko and forced referee Herb Dean to intervene on his behalf 4:12 into round one.

“I’ve been a huge fan of Fedor’s forever,” Henderson said. “I respect him so much. That’s a huge accomplishment compared to a lot of the things I’ve done.”

With that, a man many consider to be the greatest heavyweight mixed martial artist of all-time had lost for the third time in as many appearances, leading to intensifying speculation that “The Last Emperor” may have fought his last fight.

“As a fan of Fedor’s,” Henderson said, “I hope he keeps fighting.”

Tate Submits, Dethrones Coenen - Miesha Tate submitted Marloes Coenen with a fourth-round arm-triangle choke to capture the Strikeforce women’s welterweight championship in the co-main event. The competitive fight came to a dramatic close 3:03 into round four after Tate forced Coenen to tap out with an arm-triangle choke, Tate fell to the ground overwhelmed by emotion, having now achieved her goal of becoming a world champion.

Renaissance: Tom Little

By Rio

London - Thursday, 28th July 2011

Tom Little - “I’m Looking Forward To Setting The Heavyweight Division Alight”

Hatfield Heavyweight Tom Little is set to debut, against Lithuanian Rolandas Cesna, at the Graham Earl Promotions ‘Renaissance’ event at the Liquid Nightclub in Luton on Sunday, 31st July.

Former World Champ Graham Earl knows a good prospect when he sees one, so when he recently said, “I’ll be debuting an exciting new Heavyweight on the 31st“ and “he’s one of the best Heavyweights I’ve ever seen”, you know that Tom has to be special.

As an amateur young Tom, who stands at a whooping 6’6” in his socks, won sixteen of his twenty two contests. Besides his height, Tom’s main advantage is his exceptional speed, making him somewhat unique in a division renowned for big lumbering punchers.

Speaking earlier today Tom expanded on this as well as spoke about his upcoming debut, “I’m really looking forward to it and I’m looking forward to setting the Heavyweight division alight

I always knew my style was more suited to the pros than the amateurs, especially for the Heavyweight scene, because I’ve got a lot of speed which I believe the current crop aren’t going to be able to live with, which I’m going to prove on the 31st when I showcase myself to everybody.

I’ve got a good tall range, stunning stiff jab. There’s some fighters out there that are bigger than me but that don’t mean much in the Heavyweights because you can’t hurt something you can’t hit.

Basically I can’t wait to get out there, start winning and get myself noticed so people start talking about me.”

Tom Little versus Rolandas Cesna will be supporting the highly anticipated rematch between Manny Oshunrinde and Jahmaine Smyle that headlines ‘Renaissance

Graham Earl has put together an exciting undercard to support Oshunrinde-Smyle II that features, besides Tom Little, Belfast’s big banging Joe Hillerby as well as the debuts of James Smith and Danny Mulhern.

Tickets, priced £30, for the Graham Earl Promoted ‘Renaissance’ event at Liquid Nightclub, Gordon Street, Luton on Sunday July 31st 2011 are available on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at Graham Earl’s House of Champions Gym, Unit 11 Hitchin Road Industrial Estate, Luton, Bedfordshire, LU2 0DZ

Terry Holmes Back In Action July 31st

By Rio

London - Monday, 25th July 2011
Teenage Sensation Terry Holmes Back In Action July 31st.
Stevenage teenager Terry Holmes is set for his fourth pro outing this coming weekend, when he takes on Earl’s Court’s Bheki Moyo at the Graham Earl promoted ‘Renaissance’ event at the Liquid Nightclub in Luton.

Terry, who is just nineteen year of age, has made an impressive start to his professional boxing career, having already notched up three superb wins against very good competition, in Johnny Greaves, Danny Connor and Jason Nesbitt.

What’s more Terry didn’t just win, he won every single round to secure shutout 40-36 points victories on all three outings to date.

Following a sparring session, under the watchful eyes of Graham Earl, young Terry spoke briefly on the upcoming showdown with Bheki Moyo, “Yeah, I’m looking forward to it. Looking to build my record now so looking for another win.

I want to win well, same old thing you know, stick with my jabs, big rights and my combinations. just going to do the same things as last time, no sense in trying to knock him out, if it comes it comes and if the chance comes that’s it.

I’m just going to try and relax, use my jab and pick him off with my combinations.

I’m not trying to rush things, but I’m looking to build myself up to get in some kind run going and possible title contention in the next year or so. There’s a long way to go, I’m only nineteen so I’ve got plenty of age to go, there’s no rush.”

50 Years Old and Winning in Kickboxing

By Reuben Azzopardi - Malta: 27/07/2024

Andrew Hillsden is a 50 year old sportsperson but he can still go on a ring and win a Kickboxing match. This shows that it is never too late to do something new.

A sports loving person who reaches a certain age might start thinking of doing something less competitive and stressful. The majority would content themselves in taking part in a short running marathon but not Andrew Hillsden. After coming from England with his Maltese wife and settling in Ħamrun, a few years later at 49, instead of putting on the running shoes he decided to put on the Boxing gloves.

It seems that for Andrew sports is an important part of his life. As a swimmer and scuba diver it seemed that there was little else that he could try. Once he decided to go and try Kickboxing with his work collegues. It was here that he started training the sport at Master Noel Mercieca’s Ying Yang Kickboxing club.

A year later, at 50 years old, Andrew decided to take up his next challenge which was a match during the Maltese Kickboxing Championship. Even though he did not go for the Title Belt it is still remarkable that at that age someone would compete in Kickboxing. It was during “Gladiator’s Night” that Andrew faced Joseph Fenech from the Wu Shu Ky, a young and energetic athlete half his age.

They faced each other for the Full Contact 88 Weight Category for 3 rounds of 2 minutes each. Since both of them were amateurs and according to the Malta Kickboxing Association (MKBA) they had to wear all the protective equipment.

From the first bell both athletes went for a close distance match and keeping head to head for each strike given. In the second round they began to find their distance with Andrew having the upper hand with well placed punches to the head and kicks to the body. In the third round it was Fenech that was showing more action but Andrew was keeping a tight defense and good counter.

After the third round everyone thought that it was all over, but the judges gave a draw. So there was a fourth round to be held in which both athletes came back to each other with nonstop hits. Even though there was this extra round this was not enough and there was the need for a 5th and final round. Here the Kickboxers were out of energy but it seemed that Andrew had more to give and landed some good hits to the body and face.

In the end it was a unanimous decision from the judges to give the victory by points to Andrew Hillsden. Both the extra rounds were of one minute each. It is notable as well that in the Maltese Kickboxing history this is the first time that a 50 year old person competed and won a Kickboxing match.

For more information regarding the Ying Yang club’s training days please visit the website www.yingyangkickboxing.com or contact Master Noel Mercieca on 79208283 or [email protected]
