AIBA Junior & Youth Women’s World Boxing Championships

A solid performance by Russia’s young women boxers leaves the country dominating both the AIBA Junior & Youth Women’s World Boxing Championships in Antalya, Turkey, where the finals are slated for Saturday, April 30th.

Russia has six athletes in the finals of the Junior competition and five in the Youth competition, having started out with 13 junior boxers and ten youth boxers in the respective competitions. Host nation Turkey is hot on Russia’s heels as a potential leader in the medals table for the Junior competition, having also qualified six boxers for the finals, but lags behind in the Youth field with only light welterweight Elif Kayan in action on Saturday.

India remains a force to be reckoned with, having qualified five boxers for the finals across both tournaments, and will be vying with Turkey for the medals in the lower weight categories of the Junior Championships as the two countries go head-to-head in the pinweight and flyweight finals.

India’s triple Junior National Champion Lalenkawli will open the proceedings against Turkey’s 2011 Junior National Champion Neriman Istik at pinweight and Turkey’s double Junior National Champion Ulku Demir will take on Zareen Nikhat, India’s 2010 Schoolgirl Champion, in the flyweight.

The youngest boxer in the Junior Championships, India’s 2009 Junior National Champion Lalfakzvali, will be going for gold in the light bantamweight final against Vietnam’s surprise package Thi Vy Vuong, who has won all three of her preliminary bouts inside the distance after graduating from AIBA’s Road to Antalya training camp prior to the championships.

Vuong’s team-mate Thi Phuong Pham - also a Road to Antalya graduate - has qualified for the finals in her light flyweight division and will take on Japan’s only remaining representative in the competition, Kasumi Saeki.

New Zealand’s Thea Awhitu is Oceania’s sole representative in the finals of the competition. The 2009 New Zealand Junior Champion will face Turkey’s double Junior National Champion Reyhan Cakir in the featherweight final.

The light welterweight final will be an all-European affair featuring Germany’s Larissa Mischanin and Sweden’s Hanna Lundblad, bronze medallist at the 2010 European Junior Championships.

Russiadominates the upper weight categories of the Junior competition with a presence in four of the remaining seven finals, where the team’s boxers will face opposition from their neighbours such as Kazakhstan and Ukraine, well as host nation Turkey.

In the Youth competition, Russia will face tough competition from Sweden and China, who have both qualified four boxers for the finals.

Top favourite Svetlana Dmitrieva, the 2010 European Junior Champion, will start the action in the light flyweight contest against India’s Sarjubala Shamjetsabam, who already has 34 bouts in her international career.

Vietnam’s Thi Duyen Luu takes on China’s Lili Niu in the bantamweight contests after becoming the third of four Vietnamese boxers in the competition to qualify for the finals as part of the country’s superlative performance in Antalya.

The featherweight contest has the potential to be one of the highlights of the Youth finals, since it will be a re-match of the 2010 European Youth Championship final between England’s Charley Davison on Germany’s Ornella Wahner. Triple A Amateur Boxing Club boxer Davison took the European title last year with a close 2:0 victory against the experienced German.

Russiaand Sweden will face-off three times in the Youth competition, with Patricia Berghult taking on Anastasia Belyakova in the lightweight final and favourite Love Holgersson facing Irina Tsarkova in the welterweight contest. Sona Hakhverdyan and Viktoriya Krylova will be the third Sweden-Russia match-up in the finals and will have the honour of closing out the competition in the heavyweight final.

• Gomez destroys Davis- Unbeaten jr welterweight Frankie Gomez (9-0, 7 KO’s) annihilated Jason Davis at 25 seconds of the first round of a scheduled six round bout on Thursday night at Club Nokia, Los Angeles, California. Despite having a nine pound weight advantage, Davis (11-9-1, 3 KO’s) was dropped with a right hand to the head. Davis struggled to get up as referee Raul Caiz, Sr. counted Davis out. Junior lightweight Ramon Valadez won a six round unanimous decision over Rafael Lora. Valadez (8-1, 4 KO’s) countered effectively with left hands to the head as Lora came in. Lora (11-5, 5 KO’s) did have his moments, but Valadez was the more effective fighter throughout the fight. All three judges scored the fight in favor of Valadez. Scores were 60-54, 60-54, and 59-55.

 

• Pacquiao-Mosley Update - Boxing superstars Manny Pacquiao and “Sugar” Shane Mosley won’t be the only big names on SHOWTIME PPV’s huge May 7 telecast. SHOWTIME Sports® held a media conference call on Thursday to announce the superstar talent behind the mic.James Brown, the host of the popular weekly series Inside The NFL on SHOWTIME and THE NFL TODAY on CBS, will quarterback the May 7 SHOWTIME PPV four-fight telecast. The last boxing event he worked was between Shane Mosley and Fernando Vargas in 2006. An enthusiastic mainstay on CBS and SHOWTIME, Gus Johnson will call all the action from ringside. Al Bernstein, a well-respected boxing historian who has called more than 2,500 fights during his 30 years behind the ringside microphone, will provide the fight analysis alongside Antonio Tarver, a former undisputed light heavyweight world champion who has taken to his television role as “third man in the booth.” The Emmy® Award-winning Jim Gray will serve as the back-stage, ringside and in-ring reporter for the event.

 

• Kevin Mitchell arrested- Kevin Mitchell’s upcoming summer fight against John Murray is now in doubt after news surfacing earlier yesterday of the arrest of the 26-year-old Mitchell along with his mother for suspicion of possessing Cocaine and running a cannabis farm. Mitchell (31-1, 23 KO’s) hasn’t fought since being stopped in the 3rd round a year ago in May against Michael Katsidis. However, before that knockout loss, Mitchell was considered one of the best fighters in the lightweight division.

 

• Mayweather to be dropped from The Ring’s Pound-for-Pound ratings- Unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be dropped from The Ring’s pound-for-pound ratings unless Mayweather signs to fight someone by May 1st. Mayweather hasn’t been active as of late since his dominating performance against Shane Mosley last year in May. Thus he’ll be dropped from the Ring’s pound-for-pound ratings unless Mayweather signs for a fight within the next few days.

 

• Robert Guerrero- There are rumors of lightweight contender and former featherweight and super featherweight champion Robert Guerrero (29-1, 18 KO’s) moving up two entire divisions to take on WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) in order to get the 28-year-old Guerrero a big money fight against Ortiz. Guerrero recently easily beat Australian Michael Katsidis earlier this month in a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision on the undercard of the Marcos Maidana vs. Erik Morales card on April 9th.

 

• Oquendo, Perez opponents named- Super bantamweight contender Jonathan Oquendo and prospect Camilo Perez now have opponents for their fights in the series “A Puño Limpio” to be held April 6th at the Coliseo Pedrin Zorrilla in San Juan, Puerto Rico in a PR Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP) presentation that will shown live on WAPA America. Oquendo (20-2, 13 KOs), who is ranked #3 by the WBO at 122 pounds, will face dangerous Thomas “KO” Snow (14-1, 9 KOs) for the WBO NABO super bantamweight title in a 10 round bout. Meanwhile, Pérez (2-0, 2 KOs), Gold Medalist in the Central American and Caribbean Games 2010, will face Eliezer Agosto (1-0, 1 KO) in a four round 122lb fight. Also on the show, former amateur world champion McWilliams Arroyo (7-1, 6 KOs) will fight in a flyweight six round bout against a rival to be announced. Five more fights will complete the card. “A Puño Limpio” will be seen live on WAPA America at 9:00 p.m. Tickets start at $12.

 

• Fana vs Mendez- Mzonke Fana will make the first defence of his IBF junior lightweight belt against mandatory challenger Argenis Mendez from the Dominican Republic on June 11 at Carnival City, Brakpan, South Africa. The 37-year-old Fana (30-4, 12 KOs) from Khayelitsha won the vacant belt on September 1 last year when he outpointed Cassisus Baloyi over 12 rounds.

 

• Arthur Abraham’s promoter saysthat next months’ Super Six semifinals bout between their fighter and WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward is off unless neutral officials can be found for bout. The fight is supposed to take place at the Home Deport Center in Carson, California. Abraham’s promoter, Sauerland, aren’t agreeable to the referee and one of the judges coming from California.

 

• Ward media workout- Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinalists and World Boxing Association (WBA) 168-pound champion Andre Ward hosted a media day and workout with his trainer Virgil Hunter and promoter Dan Goossen on Thursday in Ward’s hometown of Oakland as he gets ready for his Semifinals showdown against Arthur Abraham on Saturday, May 14 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., live on SHOWTIME®.

Brazilian National Muaythai Championships

April 30th to May 1st will see the Brazilian National Muaythai Championships organised by the CBMTT in the city of Camaquã in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. More than 300 athletes from 21 member associations will be vying for the CBMTT championship title. The event will serve as a qualification round to select athletes who will represent Brazil at the next IFMA World Championships in September 2011 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. We wish all the athletes, officials and organisers the best of luck for a successful event, competed in the spirit of friendship, honour, respect and fair play.
