National Boxing Championships 2010 Results

Philip Galea the new under 75 Kg Champion

In front of a full house and enthusiastic crowd the Malta Boxing Federation held the first official edition of the Olympic Style, Malta Boxing Championships which where held at the Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School, Naxxar on the 25 th of April.

In the ‘School Boy’ division seeing both boys aged twelve, Kirstan Brown of Bertu’s Gym beat Eman Pace of the St Julian’s Gym to become the first School Boy Champion of Malta. Both athletes show great potential in this Olympic discipline.

In the men’s elite finals, 17 years to 34 years of age

Without a doubt the most awaited contest of the championships was the 64 kg category between Haithem Laamouz of the St Julian’s ABC against Sam Cortis from the I&J ABC. These boxers certainly did not disappoint the crowd and although by the third round the technical superiority of Laamouz became evident, he had to box hard against the stronger Cortis. Laamouz won with a Judges unanimous decision.

In the 69 Kg Peter Kahout of the St Julian’s boxing club beat Etienne Spiteri from Dione’s Boxing Club by a majorty decision. Kahout dominated through out the contest and never seemed to ease up on his opponent Spiteri.

In the under 75 Kg Philip Galea (RED) of the St Julian’s boxing club beat Mark Anastasi from the I&J ABC who are located in Mosta.

This was a closely fought encounter which had the crowd on it’s feet, both boxers gave a good account of them selves and provided the jubilant crowd with a fine display of boxing skills.

In the under 81 Kg Yousef Shah from Bertu’s Gym stopped Joseph Camilleri from the I&J in the second round to become the new Malta champion in this weight division.

The Committee and Officials would like to congratulate every Athlete and Team Staff for a great display of Olympic Boxing and sportmanship throught out these championships.

Start date of Youth World Championships postponed

Youth World Boxing Championships

AIBA has postponed the start of the Youth World Championships in Baku unitl 25th April because of the unprecdented travel situation across Europe and the importance of this event as the sole qualifying tournament for the Youth Olympic Games.

Participating national federations are advised not to rebook their return flights unless their boxers qualify for the semi-finals on 2-3 May.

Although this may adversely affect nations who are able to make it to Baku for the original start time, the Local Organizing Committee has kindly offered to cover the food & lodging costs of federations who have to extend their stay for the semi finals.

Malta Boxing National Championships 2010

The ‘Malta Olympic Style Boxing Championships’ finals will be held on Sunday morning the 25th of April 2010 in the main hall of the “Govanni Curmi Higher Secondary School” Naxxar.

Doors will open to the public at 9.30 AM, entrance fee is only 5 Euros.

These will be the first ever official national titles organised by the Malta Boxing Federation.

The most heavily contested division is the ‘Men’s Elite’ 17 to 34 years of age , with the 64 Kg, 69 Kg and 75 Kg being the most popular weight categories. A number of Schoolboys 12 to 14 years of age are also expected to make their debut.

The elimination bouts will be held in the coming days with the successful candidates participating in the finals on the 25th of April.

French Boxers at the I&J ABC of Mosta

French and Maltese Boxers

On the initiative of the French Embassy in Malta and the General Council of the Department of La Marne (France), young talented French and Maltese boxers participated in a training programme held in I & J ABC, Mosta CLUB on April 7th.

An opening ceremony gathered H.E. Daniel Rondeau and delegation from the General Council of the Department of La Marne led by Vice-president Mr Philippe Michelot together with Mr. Anthony Willoughby, President of the Malta Boxing Federation, Mr. Charles Cardona, Vice President and Mr. Alexander Zammit, Secretary General.

Mr. Bernard Vassallo, Chairman of the Malta Sports Council, welcomed the athletes and thanked the French Embassy for the cooperation put in place wishing that many people could discover the beauty of this sport.

H.E. Daniel Rondeau thanked the Maltese authorities for their cordial welcome and for the cooperation to make this project a reality. He expressed his wish to foster closer ties between both countries not only from a political, economic or cultural point of view but also from a sports point of view.

The opening ceremony was then followed by an exchange of presents between the French and Maltese clubs and finished by a training programme under their coaches watchful eyes of Mr. Ahmed Berrouag and Mr. Iman Galea.
