ROWLAND AND GARGAN WIN SILVER IN FRANCE

Irish Boxing News

BY BERNARD O’NEILL (IABA PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER)

.

Ireland’s Christine Gargan and Katie Rowland had to settle for silver from today’s European Youth & Junior Championships finals in Calais, France.

Gargan, from the St Georges BC in Belfast, was beaten 12-1 by Svetlana Dmitrieva of Russia in the 46Kg Junior final.

And Geesala BC flyweight Rowland, a five time Irish champion, was agonisingly edged out on a razor thin 10-9 count-back by Russia’s Victoriya Kuleshava following a 4-4 tie in the 51Kg Youth final.

Nicole Meli, Mikela Walsh, Sarah Close and Clare Grace all claimed bronze at the tournament to ensure that Ireland’s 10-strong squad secured a very impressive haul of six medals from France.

Speaking after today’s finals, Irish coach Pat McDonagh, who was working Ireland’s corner along with John McCormack, said that the girls in green had done Irish boxing proud.

“I thought that Katie did enough to win her final today, but it just didn’t go our way and to tell the truth we’re gutted, said McDonagh, who is Rowland’s coach at the Geesala BC in Mayo. “Katie was absolutely brilliant. She kept pushing forward and she never took a backward step.

“I thought she’d get it when it went to a count-back, but it unfortunately it wasn’t to be. Katie and Christine and the entire Irish squad can be very proud of the way they represented Ireland in France.

“This is their first major international tournament and to be bringing home six medals speaks for itself.Every member of the squad showed tremendous heart and courage and they can be very proud of what they have achieved against some of the best in the world at this level.

“Our girls also showed that Irish women’s boxing is now a force to be reckoned with internationally. The medals are a bonus - a very welcome bonus. To win two silver and four bronze medals at this level is a magnificent achievement by any standard.”

The Irish squad are due to arrive home via Dublin airport tomorrow afternoon. Flight times will be confirmed shortly.

WSB Boxing Results - Kazakhstan Victories

WSB – Results: Kazakhstan’s Astana Arlans overran their opposition the Turkish Istanbulls at the inauguration of the first exhibition test match between two teams from the WSB franchises. The event was held in occasion of the AIBA congress which is being held in Kazakhstan.

The home side put on a spectacular boxing display at the Almaty Sports Palace this evening, dominating all five of the weight categories to secure a 5-0 victory in the first-ever World Series of Boxing bout.

WSB Report: Sunday, 31 October 2023 - Kazakhstan, Almaty.

Opening the proceedings with a short speech, AIBA President C. K. Wu said that “the World Series of Boxing is a key element in AIBA’s vision for the future development of boxing. It will help boxers with their careers; it will provide a return on investment for the national federations who nurture its boxers; but most importantly it will change the perception of boxing.”

After Bagad Alimbekov took the opening victory in the 54kg bantamweight category, Yerzhan Mussafirov buoyed the Astana Arlans team even further with a technical knock-out against Mehmet Topçakan of the Istanbulls in the second round of the 61kg lightweight contest. Topçakan picked up two standing counts in the round, which requires the referee to stop the contest under the WSB competition rules.

“The first round was quite tough because I didn’t know my opponent,” Mussafirov said. But after the second round it started to get easier. In the second round he [Topçakan] seemed more tired and more open for me.”

The 73kg middleweight division saw a return to the ring for Kazakhstan’s Olympic Champion Bakhyt Sarsekbayev, who cruised to an easy victory over the Istanbulls’ team captain Onur Şipal. Sarsekbayev had little time for covering defence and seemed at ease in the ring.

“In a few years’ time, I think this is going to be a massive tournament,” Sipal said. “I was fighting against a champion and I will never forget this moment because I have written a piece of history. It was difficult to move up from 64kg and October was a very busy month for me with eight matches, including the World University Championships in Mongolia and the national championships in Turkey.”

Ghana’s Maxwell Amponsah enjoyed the vociferous backing of the home crowd as he put in a stylish performance to dismiss Onder Ozgül. Amponsah seems to have adapted well to life in Kazakhstan and even had a few Russian words ready for the local journalists.

“I’m happy that I won,” he said. “My opponent came here to fight and came at me with hard punches. I need more training because I’m hoping to win my fights. I’m not hoping to knock my opponents out, but I do need to train harder.”

In the fifth and final bout of the evening in the 91+kg heavyweight division, Serbian heavyweight Milutin Stankovic rounded off the strong start for the home team with a unanimous decision from the judges.

Boxers Face Off At First Ever WSB Exhibition Match

alt

Boxers from the Astana Arlans and Istanbulls World Series of Boxing teams took to the scales this evening for the first-ever World Series of Boxing weigh-in ahead of tomorrow’s first exhibition match on the eve of the 2010 AIBA Congress.

In just a few hours the first WSB exhibition match will proceed.

WSB Article on weigh- in

Hosts Astana Arlans will compete in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) Asian conference against teams from Baku, Beijing and Incheon from November 19th, while visitors Istanbulls will face opponents from Milan, Moscow and Paris in the European conference. Tomorrow, the teams will experience their first taste of WSB.

.

The guest of honor at the weigh-in was AIBA President C. K. Wu, who is credited with the vision of the World Series of Boxing as part of a program of wide-ranging reforms at the International Boxing Association that aim to make boxing one of the top Olympic sports.

“The World Series of Boxing was born with a simple concept,” Wu said in his opening speech. “To have, for the first time, city-based boxing teams featuring the world’s best boxers competing against each other on a regular basis.”

“The boxers earn a salary; the team earns income from sponsorship and ticket sales, while AIBA shares the TV revenues.

“But more importantly, competing within the AIBA framework, the boxers retain their eligibility for the Olympic Games. The Individual Champions even qualify directly for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

“Four years ago, this was the vision. In just over two weeks, it will become reality. The twelve teams are in place, the venues are booked and the boxers are already in training.”

The Istanbulls have two of their bantamweight (54kg) boxers competing, since Mehmet Topçakan has moved up to the lightweight (61kg) division just for the exhibition match.

The middleweight (73kg) division will feature Kazakhstan’s headline boxer, Olympic Champion Bakhyt Sarsekbayev, who will take on Turkey’s Onur Şipal.

Teams competing in the WSB must select at least one international boxer to compete in every match. Tomorrow, Maxwell Amponsah will be the first such boxer to experience the revolutionary new competition format when he competes for the home side against Önder Özgül from Turkey. Amponsah is adjusting to life in Kazakhstan after moving from Ghana. “I’m adjusting ok,” he said. “I’m trying to learn the language and the training is very good, but it’s winter here, which takes some getting used to.”

The heavyweight (91+kg) division features two international boxers, with Serbia’s Milutin Stankovic taking on Beijing Olympian and 2009 World Championships quarter-finalist Mohamed Arjaoui from Morocco.

The exhibition match takes place tomorrow at 7pm at the Almaty Sports Palace, Kazakhstan.
