The three teams at the top of each conference in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) maintain their leads after the third week of the 2010-2011 regular season. Baku Fires are top overall as the only unbeaten team in the series after a third consecutive victory at home to the Incheon Red Wings home on Saturday. The Los Angeles Matadors took a 4-1 victory over the Memphis Force on Sunday, while Paris United remain on top the European standings after a 3-2 away win against the Istanbulls.

The Miami Gallos edged the Mexico City Guerreros 3-2 to take the league lead at the start of the third week of action on Thursday. As in their first home contest, the Gallos used their powerful heavyweight finisher Trent Rawlins (Melbourne, Australia) to secure the team win and move their record to 2-1 overall.

World Series Boxing Updates

  • Lightweight Artur Schmidt will become the first German to take to the ring in the World Series of Boxing as he debuts for Paris United for their away match against theIstanbulls at the Ahmet Comert Spor Salonu in Istanbul on Friday. -Schmidt, 25, suffered an early exit from the 2007 AIBA World Championships in Chicago but came back the next year to win the gold medal at the 2008 Brandenburg Cup in Frankfurt. He will face Mohammad Azizi of the Istanbulls in the lightweight contest. Azizi, Asian Championships silver medallist in 2008 and 2009, will also be making his debut in the tournament.

.

  • Action in the World Series of Boxing Americas continues later this week as the new, global league moves on into its third week. The Los Angeles Matadors (1-1) have taken an early lead in the conference standings having won seven of their first 10 bouts as a team. However, the Matadors, along with the three other teams that comprise the Americas conference are still looking to establish their own identities in the ring. The results from week three could provide a much clearer look as to what the year might bring for each squad as the season unfolds.

Stepping into the ring first in week three will be the Mexico City Guerreros (1-1) and the Miami Gallos (1-1) on Thursday, December 9, as Miami gets set to host their second home contest of the season. No WSB Americas team has yet to go into an arena and steal one away from their home opponent. In fact, the Matadors are the only team to have picked up a victory away from home having won two bouts against the Gallos on November 23.

WSB - Paris & Los Angeles clean sweep

Paris United and Los Angeles Matadors Take Clean Sweeps in the WSB Boxing League.

The World Series of Boxing has entered into its second weekend of non stop spectacular action.

WSB: Monday, 29 November 2023 - Switzerland, Lausanne

Paris United are sitting pretty at the top of the European conference standings after notching up a 5-0 victory on the second weekend of World Series of Boxing action. Brahim Asloum’s boys put on a spectacular show in front of the home crowd at the Halle Georges Carpentier on Friday evening, shutting out the Moscow team in their first home match. The Los Angeles Matadors closed out the second weekend’s action with a clean sweep against the Mexico City Guerreros at the Nokia Theatre on Sunday evening.

In the opening bantamweight bout in Paris, Nordine Oubaali got the evening started with a technical knock-out over Uzbekistan’s Alisher Mahmudov. The 2009 Mediterranean Games gold medalist closed the fight in the third round, setting his team up for four consecutive wins on points to take three points for the team, placing them top of the table in Europe.

The encounter between the Istanbulls and Milano Thunder at the Ahmet Comert Spor Salonu in Istanbul on Friday was one of only two matches this weekend in which all five bouts went the distance. Turkey’s 19-year-old Mehmet Topcakan opened with a win over Vitaliy Volkov at bantamweight. Vazgen Safaryants replied with a win on points for Milan against Shafiq Chitou at lightweight. Team captain Onur Sipal then beat the only Italian in action for Milan on Friday, Luca Podda, at middleweight before Bosko Draskovic drew the scores level for Milan. In the evening’s climax, Mohammed Arjaoui sealed the victory for the home team with a win on points over Damir Beljo.

Two matches in the Asian conference followed on Saturday evening, with the Baku Fires outclassing the Astana Arlans in a much anticipated match. Yerzhan Mussafirov was the only boxer to beat his opponent in the home ring at lightweight. Baku Fires followed a technical knock-out through injury at bantamweight with the same result in the middleweight before two boxers who won by walkover last week, Denys Poyatsyka and Magomedrasul Medzhidov, scored their first wins for the team in the light heavyweight and heavyweight bouts respectively.

At the first home match at the Venetian Hotel in Macau, the Beijing Dragons made a strong start with wins on points for Zhiwei He and Zhimin Wang at bantamweight and lightweight against the Incheon Red Wings. The home team’s only international boxer in action on Saturday, Pedro Lima from Brazil, then won by walkover against Andranik Hakobyan, who had failed the medical after flying directly from Armenia, before the Red Wings made a late rally with technical knock-outs for the two Algerians, Abdelhafid Benchabla and Chouaib Bouloudinats, competing in the final two bouts.

The Baku Fires stay top of the Asian standings with six points, having lost only one of their ten bouts after two weeks of competition. The Astana Arlans are in second with three points and a lead over the Beijing Dragons, who have the same points total but only half the wins of Astana. The Incheon Red Wings are bottom, having won only two bouts so far.

In the Americas conference, Memphis Force opened the weekend’s action with a convincing 4-1 home win over the Miami Gallos at the Desoto Civic Center. The visitors’ Donovan Dennis was the only boxer to notch up a win for the Gallos in the evening’s finale, the heavyweight contest. On Sunday evening, the Los Angeles Matadors closed out the second weekend’s action with a clean sweep over the Mexico City Guerreros, including technical knock-outs for Brazil’s Everton Lopes at lightweight and Javier

Torres at heavyweight, who stopped fellow Californian Alex Rivera of the Guerreros in the fourth round. All the teams in the Americas conference have a 1-1 record after two weeks, but the clean sweep puts the Los Angeles Matadors at the top of the Americas Conference, one point ahead of their three rivals.

WSB Boxing - Miami defeats Los Angeles

Miami Gallos Defeat Los Angeles Matadors

WSB - Tuesday, 23 November 2023 - USA, Miami

The Miami Gallos overcame a 2-0 deficit in the best of five bouts and rallied to secure a 3-2 win in front of their hometown fans in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) season debut at the American Airlines Arena last night. The Gallos and Matadors squared off in the last contest of the opening week for the new global boxing tournament with the Mexico City Guerreros opening up with a 5-0 win against the Memphis Force last Friday in Mexico City.

The Matadors took the first two bouts of the evening in the bantamweight and lightweight divisions, but the Gallos would rally with three straight victories and clinched the match win in the final bout of the evening as the Gallos’ Trent Rawlins overcame Long Beach native and Matador David Imoesiri in a closely contested bout.

.

Just when a team win for the Gallos was looking out of reach down 0-2 after two bouts, middleweight (160 lbs/73 kg) William Williams (Conyers, Ga.) took to the ring against Matador Charlie Watson (Johnson City, Tenn.), where he made it clear the night was just getting started by taking command of the fight. Williams looked impressive in his unanimous decision victory (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) and will surely be a fighter to watch as the season unfolds.

Miami Gallos Head Coach Pat Burns was pleased with Williams’ performance. “William was absolutely super in helping turn the momentum back around for the Gallos. He showed great maturity.”

Kenny Egan, a 2008 U.S. Olympic silver medalist from Ireland, defeated Long Beach native Matador Dorian Anthony in a unanimous decision, 49-46, 49-47, 48-47, to notch the team score at two apiece.

“I knew from the beginning I was ready for this fight,” said Egan. “I felt like he was fighting a lot with his head and not fighting a clean fight. I’m very happy with my performance and I felt like I won all five rounds. Everything is so new to me, this being my first pro-style fight, but I feel strong and I’m ready for the next one.”

“I went in there with my game plan and gave it my all,” Anthony said. “I didn’t think about his silver medal. I felt it was a pretty fair decision for me. The momentum kept shifting both ways throughout the bout. In the last round, I kind of gave it away to some big shots.”

“Kenny showcased why he was an Olympic silver medalist and was world-class against a tough opponent,” said Burns. “The Matador fighter tried to take Kenny out of his rhythm but Kenny was able to maintain his composure, overcome a cut and still get the win.”

Bantamweight Matador Fernando Martinez started Los Angeles off with a win defeating Jose Luis Meza Ochoa by decision, 47-47, 48-46, 48-46.

.

Lightweight Matador Eric Fowler notched a fourth round technical knockout against Adrian Martinez in the second bout of the evening. With 1:34 left in the fourth round, Fowler threw a right rendering Martinez defenseless against the ropes prompting referee Frank Gentile to stop the fight.

“I’m real happy for the WSB and for boxers competing in this tournament,” said Burns. “This was a great success tonight. I’ve been in this game awhile and it’s about time that we get to show fans what real boxing is about and the excitement and skill that these fighters have.

The L.A. Matadors return to Los Angeles for their home opener Sunday, Nov. 28, at the Nokia Theatre against the undefeated, inherent rival Mexico City Guerreros and hope to build momentum for the winter-long World Series of Boxing season. It will also mark the debut of two-time Olympian Rau’shee Warren for the Matadors. The Gallos will travel to Tennessee and take on the Memphis Force Friday, November 27 at the Desoto Civic Center.

AIBA - Spends More Than It Earns

.

Originally published by insidethegames

By David Owen

AIBA, the international boxing association, spent nearly SFr4 million (£2.6 million/$4.1 million) more than it earned in the period between January 2007 and June 2010, according to financial statements circulated ahead of this month’s AIBA Congress.

The SFr3.82 million (£2.51 million/$3.97 million) deficit took a big chunk out of the body’s Unrestricted Funds, which plunged from SFr5.98 million (£3.93 million/$6.22 million) to SFr2.16 million (£1.42 million/$2.25 million) over the three-and-a-half years.

.

More than half of the deficit is explained by a SFr2.1 million (£1.3 million/$2.2 million) provision to cover a potential contribution to World Series of Boxing, the new global competition scheduled to get under way next month.

.

AIBA said that the provision was due to a loan to WSB and that this would be covered by franchise fees and the proceeds from other rights.

The external auditor report, signed by Pierre Henri Pingeon and Sandrine Wagnière of KPMG, put AIBA’s “total exposure” to WSB at SFr3.4 million (£2.2 million/$3.5 million).

The report went on: “AIBA has recorded a provision of SFr2.1 million (£1.3 million/$2.2 million) in order to cover a potential contribution of AIBA required by the shareholders’ agreement.

“The management of AIBA does not consider recording an additional provision, because the current results of WSB are in line with the business plan which forecasts a profitable result for the first season 2010/2011.”

The year 2009 - including the first WSB-related revenues - was the only 12-month period in which AIBA’s revenues, at SFr6.16 million (£4.04 million/$6.36 million), exceeded expenses.

The new competition is scheduled to get under way on November 19, with matches over the first weekend involving 12 teams based in Astana, Baku, Beijing, Delhi, Istanbul, Los Angeles, Memphis, Mexico City, Miami, Milan, Moscow and Paris.

An exhibition match between Astana and Istanbul is planned for the eve of the Congress on October 31 in Almaty.

WSB - ISTANBULLS

The city of Istanbul has announced its team name and logo for the World Series of Boxing (WSB). ISTANBULLS will be competing in the WSB European conference against teams from Milan, Paris and Moscow from November 2010.

Istanbulls CEO Kenan Saran explained the thoughs behind the creation of the logo: “We think the Istanbulls is a catchy name, with its double-meaning. The Bull represents enormous power, speed and strength of character, which we expect to be reflective of our boxers.

Additionally, the horn of the bull identifies with two major symbols of Turkey, which are the crescent of the Turkish Flag and the Golden Horn, the historic inlet of Istanbul.”

.

SARAN Media is the owner of the Istanbul WSB franchise. Founded in 1990, the company provides services in all aspects of media from TV content production, events management, sports and entertainment rights distribution and broadcasting in Turkey.

Istanbul (Turkish: Istanbul, historically known as Byzantium and Constantinople; see the names of Istanbul) is the largest city in Turkey and 5th largest city proper in the world with a population of 12.8 million, also making it the second largest metropolitan area in Europe by population, and the largest metropolitan city proper. Istanbul is also a mega city, as well as the cultural, economic, and financial centre of Turkey. The city covers 39 districts of the Istanbul province. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) sides of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents. Istanbul is a designated alpha world city.
