‘Irish Lightning’ Will Strike on January 30

Dean ‘Irish Lightning’ Byrne Set ‘To Strike Up A Storm’ In Dublin On Jan 30th.

By Rio

London - Wednesday 12th January 2011

Sensational, unbeaten (14-0 with 6 wins by KO), Light Welterweight prospect Dean ‘Irish Lightning’ left his London base earlier today to travel back to Dublin, where he is set to fight a yet to be named opponent at the Dolphil promotions event at the Citywest Hotel on Sunday the 30th January 2011.

Dean is managed and trained in Los Angeles, USA by ‘Trainer of the Year’ Freddie Roach at his Wild Card Gym, where he regularly sparred with Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan amongst others, but since returning to London has been training with Barry Smith at Johnny Eames’ Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town.

The globetrotting ‘Irish Lightning’, who during his career has already fought in Australia, America and Ireland, has already proved his championship credentials, having won the Australian Light Welterweight title on just his fifth outing, is intent on making his mark in Europe and to challenge for either an Irish or British title in the near future.

Following his final bruising sparring session, with Freddie Turner at the Ultrachem TKO Gym, The “Irish Lightning’ took the time to talk briefly on his career and the upcoming Dublin fight. “I’ve no idea of my opponent as yet, I’m sure he’ll be a decent opponent as it’s a Dolphil Promotions show on the 30th January.

I’m ready, the last couple of weeks I’ve been training at the Ultrachem TKO Gym in London where Barry Smith has been helping me out a lot.

I’ve been sparring with everyone up at the gym. Freddie Turner, just got out after five rounds sparring with Freddie. I’ve been sparring Kash (Akaash Bhatia) and Nate (Nathan Weiss) and all the boys up here.

I’m 14 and O with six knockouts, I’ve been a pro five years now, had two years of inactivity due to injury. I’m ready to fight now and have no injuries. I’m feeling strong and I’m ready to step up to another level and get some title shots.

Freddie Roach is my trainer/manager, when I’m in England ticking over Barry helps me out a lot and keeps me in good shape, and that’s what you need to do is keep ticking over. As a professional person, not just a fighter, you have to be always ticking over and being in good shape.

I’m ready to go now, you know, I’m really looking forward to the fight.”

As mentioned previously, Dean’s coach in London is Ultrachem TKO’s upcoming young trainer Barry Smith, who has worked with many of Johnny Eames’ world class stable.

Barry, who has coached Dean for his last two Dublin fights, spoke of his talented charge, “Man, I think he’s brilliant, he’s a great prospect and has a great future ahead of him. He’s got all the tools. He just does it, he’s a delight to work with. He trains hard, he wants it. He’s always in the gym, he enjoys his boxing.

You don’t have to tell him to do anything, because he just does it, you don’t have to moan at him he just does it. He’s really keen and dedicated. He’s just a great all round fighter.

He’s without doubt one of the best fighters I’ve seen. He will go all the way. I have no doubts about it, he can go all the way. He lives the life. He doesn’t go out celebrating after a fight, two days after he’s back in the gym. Brilliant.

He makes it easy to work with him, he’s just so professional and he knows what he wants and he knows where he’s going and that’s real good.

When he’s in America he has one of the best trainers in the World (Freddie Roach) and over here he’s at the TKO Gym with myself. What more can I say, he’s dedicated and is a great fighter.

On the 30th he’s gonna do the business, Irish Lightning’s gonna strike.”

Final word though has to go to the ‘Irish Lightning’ who had a bit of interesting news for his British fans “I’ve been talking to a couple of people and am hoping in the future to get a fight in England so you might see a bit of ‘Irish Lightning’ here in 2011. So all you UK fans out there you may get to see the Irish Lightning strike up a storm in the UK soon.

I also want to thank all my supporters and any new fans I have, and those that want to become fans, to get down to Citywest Hotel and see Irish Lightning strike up a storm in Dublin on January 30th.”

Dean ‘Irish Lightning’ Byrne against a yet to be named opponent will be at the Dolphil Promotions show at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin on Sunday 30th January 2010.

Also featured on the show are Paulie Hyland, Robbie Long, Ian Tims, Michael Sweeney, Oisin Fagan, Anthony Fitzgerald, Mark Heffron amongst others.

For tickets call Dean ‘The Irish Lightning’ Byrne on 0851 077634.

Balker’s Showdown With Okoth 22 January

By Rio

London Tuesday 11th January 2011

Dutch Cruiser Balker’s Ready For London Showdown With Okoth On 22nd Jan

Exciting London based Dutch Cruiserweight Mitchell Balker is set for his second British outing, since signing with Johnny Eames’ Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym team last year, when he comes face to face with Battersea’s super tough ‘Fighting Fireman’ Nick ‘The Ox’ Okoth at the Graham Earl promoted ‘CAPITAL PUNISHMENT’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 22nd January 2011.

Balker, who prior to moving to London had an unbeaten three fight record, will be looking to put the disappointment of losing to British championship prospect Matty Askin, when the fight was controversially stopped during a wild exchange that see Balker visibly shake Askin, on his maiden UK outing in November.

However Balker’s opponent on the 22nd January is no walk over, as the ever popular former Commonwealth and IBO Inter-Continental Champion Darren ‘Raging Bull’ Corbett can attest. Back in April last year Okoth shot to fame following his gritty all action performance to overcome Corbett at the Sky televised Prizefighter - Cruiserweights 2 to rightfully earn a showdown with eventual tournament winner Jon Lewis Dickinson in the final.

Following a sparring session with Southern Area Cruiserweight champ Leon ‘Solid’ Williams, at the Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town, Balker spoke briefly about his preparations for his upcoming fight with Okoth. “I don’t know not too much about Nick. He fought Ali (TKO gym mate Ali Adams) not long ago, but other than that not know much about him.

Training going very good. After my first fight in the UK I was straight in the gym so I’m in shape like always.

I’ve been sparring Leon (Williams). Sparring has been going really, really well. I’m in great shape. Tip top condition so sparring going very well.

I feel really strong, very confident. I can’t wait. It’s going to be a great fight”

Mitchell Balker versus Nick ‘The Ox’ Okoth will be on the undercard of Paul Morby vs. Daniel ‘The Slick’ Cadman BBBofC Southern Area Super Middleweight title showdown at the Graham Earl promoted ‘Capital Punishment’ event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 22nd January 2011.

Graham Earl has put together a top class support card for the Morby vs Cadman title fight that includes the third outing for Ultrachem TKO’s exciting Welterweight Danny ‘Cassius’ Connor, who is set to face Graham Earl’s nineteen year old protégé Terry Holmes.

Also on the card are British Masters Light Welterweight Champion Jay ‘The Isle Of Wight Assassin’ Morris, Hove’s unbeaten Light Heavyweight Navid Iran, unbeaten Middleweight Joe ‘The Belfast Banger’ Hillerby, Leicester’s Super Middleweight Jahmaine ‘ Smasher’ Smyle, Balker’s Ultrachem TKO gym mate Daryl Setterfield and Miami, Florida exile, now living in Luton, Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Oshinronde all against yet to be named opponents.

Tickets, priced £35 (unreserved) and £50 (ringside) are available on-line now at www.tkoboxoffice.com - or for further information call 07960 850645.

Graham Earl Guests On The Steve Bunce Boxing Hour

By Rio

London - Tuesday 11th January 2011

Former World Champ Graham Earl Guests On The Steve Bunce Show This Thursday

Former WBU Lightweight Champion of the World, now turned Boxing promoter, Graham Earl is to be a guest on Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour, on BBC Radio London 94.9 between 8pm and 9pm this coming Thursday, 13th January 2011, to talk about his upcoming show ‘CAPITAL PUNISHMENT’ which takes place at York Hall, in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 22nd January 2011.

During his illustrious career Graham won virtually every domestic title going, including the Southern Area, British, Commonwealth and of course the WBU World title. Whilst the later may have been Graham’s crowning glory it was his next fight, against Michael ‘The Great’ Katsides for the interim WBO belt, that Graham is most fondly remembered for.

Graham, always a crowd favourite due to his ever gutsy performances, showed he had the heart the size of a Lion’s after going to war with Katsides right from the opening bell. Graham was sent to canvas twice in the final 30 seconds of first round but on both occasions was back on his feet to resume the toe-to-toe punch fest.

Round two was more of the same, again Graham was sent to the canvas but as before Graham was back on his feet quickly. Some twenty seconds or so later Graham’s trainer Johnny Eames threw the towel into the ring as Graham, with his back against the ropes, absorbed massive salvo after massive salvo from Katsides.

Referee Mickey Vann picked the towel up and threw it back, just seconds later it was Katsides turn to take the count after Graham lets rip with a massive right hand which turned the Australian’s legs to jelly. Following the count Graham marched forward and pressured Katsides, who was clearly was in trouble, for the rest of the round.

Round three see Graham revert to boxing rather than locking horns with Katsides, following a series of lows blows from Katsides, which eventually cost the Aussie a point deduction, Graham easily secured the round by a clear 10-8 points margin.

Round four was just plain brutal, Katsides stepped up his attack but Graham once again showed his resolve by letting rip with massive rights and combinations of equal venom.

Graham again reverted to his boxing in the fifth round and put on a magnificent performance. In the final twenty seconds of the round Katsides backed Graham into a corner and started to let rip with bomb after bomb, Graham ducked and weaved before letting rip with massive right hands of his own.

Unfortunately for Graham, even after putting on such a solid performance in the fifth, his team felt he was taking far too many shots and retired him in the corner.

Graham may have lost the fight but he won the hearts and minds of boxing fans the world over with his gutsy never say die performance that night. The fight quite rightly was declared the ‘Fight of the Year’.

When Graham fought you were guaranteed value for your money and now he has turned his attention to promoting nothing has changed, his ‘Capital Punishment’ event which is headlined by the much anticipated Southern Area Super Middleweight title fight between Paul Morby and Daniel ‘The Slick’ Cadman and is supported by a top class undercard.

Speaking earlier today Graham Earl said, “It’s always an honour to be on Buncey’s show.

Steve is the voice of British Boxing and his shows are always entertaining. I’m really looking forward to being on his show this Thursday.”

Final word has to go to the show’s host Steve Bunce who said, “In addition to Graham I’ve got Willie Casey on the show, Jimmy Batten from the 70s and 80s and the last interview with Gary Mason.

It’s the original and still the best - it covers the lot: Million-pound fights, down and out boxers, new promoters, old promoters, cranks, unknown amateurs, fruitcakes, world champions, legends, lunatics and the best from boxing every single week. It has broadcast every single Thursday since Jan 7th 2010!”

Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour goes out on BBC Radio London every Thursday between 8-9pm on BBC London 94.9, online live on BBC iPlayer.

Tickets for the Graham Earl promoted CAPITAL PUNISHMENT at York Hall, Bethnal Green in London on Saturday 22nd January 2011 are priced £35 (unreserved) and £50 (ringside) and are available on-line now at www.tkoboxoffice.com - or for further information call 07960 850645

Boxing News in Brief - Tue 11th January

alt

Latest International Boxing News in Brief – Tuesday 11th January 2010 for: “The Real Deal” Holyfield, Antonio DeMarco vs Reyes Sanchez, Archie Ray Marquez, Cornelius White, Donaire a heavy favorite over Montiel, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Klitschko vs. Solis, Lateef Kayode, Luis Franco, Marquez vs. Morales a possibility, Prizefighter, Ray “Merciless” Mercer, Redemption in America, Rico Ramos, Sherman “Tank” Williams, Tommy “The Duke” Morrison, Tony Dodson, Veterans Night in Montréal

.

  • SP Promotions, Veterans Night in Montréal - Almost twenty years after they squared as a pair of undefeated fighters for the WBO heavyweight world championship in 1991, veterans Ray “Merciless” Mercer and Tommy “The Duke” Morrison will share the same ring in a pair of separate bouts scheduled for February 25th in Montreal. Also joining the senior circuit will be two-time world title challenger Joe Gatti, brother of Arturo and over eight years removed from his last fight. Gatti who is 43 years-old is scheduled to meet Walid Smichet who at 31 and also recently retired qualifies as a young buck amongst most of the night’s combatants.

.

  • Klitschko vs. Solis - WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko is set to defend against mandatory challenger Odlanier Solis on March 19 at the Köln Arena in Cologne, Germany. The respective camps came to an agreement averting a scheduled WBC purse bid. Solis is said to have agreed to a $1.8 million purse, while Klitschko’s K2 Promotions will promote the fight.

.

  • SHOWTIME announces fight telecasts — Undefeated and heralded prospects Luis Franco, Lateef Kayode, Archie Ray Marquez, Rico Ramos and Cornelius White highlight an action-packed February of ShoBox: The New Generation fights while two SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING events will follow, including a March 19 battle for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Super Middleweight World Championship between champion Lucian Bute and Brian Magee. - “In our 25th year of boxing on SHOWTIME, we’re pleased to formally announce our first four dates of 2011,” said Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports®.

.

  • Donaire a heavy favorite over Montiel — Las Vegas’ first world title fight of 2011 will feature world bantamweight champion Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel defending his title against two-division world champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire in the latest chapter of the storied México-Philippines rivalry on February 19, at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. The MGM Resorts Sports Books opening line has Donaire the betting favorite. Donaire is -220 over Montiel who is +180.

.

  • Antonio DeMarco vs Reyes Sanchez — For lightweight Antonio DeMarco (24-2-1, 18KOs), it doesn’t really matter where his next fight will be held but never in his wildest dreams would he have expected Grand Island, Nebraska. On February 26th, DeMarco of Tijuana, MX, will challenge fellow countryman Reyes Sanchez (20-3-1, 11KOs) of Mexico City, MX, for the WBC Silver lightweight title in the main event of “Rumble in the Heartland”. The eight fight night will be held at the Heartland Events Center. The fight will be televised by Showtime and presented by Gary Shaw Promotions.

.

  • Redemption in America — Charlotte, N.C. (Jan. 11) – Veteran heavyweight Sherman “Tank” Williams (34-11-2, 19 KOs) will step into the ring with Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield on January 22 at the historic Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. - “My experience boxing Vladamir Klitschko for weeks on end has prepared me to fight the best in the world,” Williams said. “While I respect Evander’s experience in the ring with him having beaten Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes and Buster Douglas, I’m in the best shape of my career and I’m going to make it a very long night for Holyfield on Jan. 22.” - Williams, a sparring partner in the Klitschko camps for two years, will battle for Holyfield’s World Boxing Federation heavyweight title.

  • Tony Dodson has laughed off suggestions that Prizefighter is his last shot at glory – saying victory at Olympia in London on January 29 will be the catalyst for another major title tilt. — The Liverpool boxer is one of the favourites for the 16th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one-night tournaments and after title fight defeats to local rivals Tony Quigley and Paul Smith in his last two bouts, the temptation is there for pundits to say it’s now or never for The Warrior.

.

  • Unbeaten Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) is taking the backdoor into the WBC title by taking on interim World Boxing Council middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KO’s) for a bout that will reportedly be taking place in May after Chavez Jr. gets by his scheduled 10 round bout on January 29th against former fringe contender Billy Lyell (22-8, 4 KO’s) at the Estadio Banorte, Culiacan, Mexico.

.

  • Marquez vs. Morales a possibility — The expectation remains for a possible fight between Mexican stars Juan Manuel Márquez and Érik “Terrible” Morales for April 9th in Las Vegas. “We still don’t have anything decided or finalized but we are studying the possibility,” said Marquez. “On January 20 we have a meeting with Golden Boy Promotions where we will speak about whether the WBA and WBO lightweight titles will be in play and also this if this will be a 12 round fight. There are many subjects to talk with Golden Boy Promotions about but after that meeting we’ll have a final answer for this possible fight or any other fight mentioned.”

Audley Harrison faces BBBoC today

Heavyweight Audley Harrison is expected to find out today whether the British Boxing Board of Control will withhold any of his reported £1.5million purse following his passive effort against WBA heavyweight champion David Haye in November. Harrison will appear before the board to explain non-performance in the one-sided bout.

The nature of Audley Harrison’s third round KO defeat to WBA heavyweight title-holder David Haye will be examined by the BBBoC later today. The board will decide if Harrison, should be paid in full for his night’s work or punished for not putting up enough of a fight. Audley is said to have earned £1.5 million for the contest.

Harrison, for whatever reason, decided not to throw any punches for the three rounds of the fight other than one jab. Why Harrison failed to throw one meaningful punch is the big mystery.

The BBBoC have the power to withhold a percentage of Harrison’s purse should they decide that he did not put enough effort into the fight. Harrison, though, claims that his strategy was to take Haye past the mid-rounds before putting his own tactical battle plan into action.

This match was one of the oddest heavyweight title fights in memory, as not only did Harrison not throw punches, but Haye did little as well until the 3rd. Both fighters looked petrified and very weary of each other. Finally, Haye landed a right hand that stunned Harrison in the 3rd. Haye then let loose with a stream of shots that had Harrison staggering around. The fight was then quickly stopped before Harrison could get really hurt. Harrison has complained that the referee had jumped the gun in stopping the fight to early and did not give him a chance to apply his strategy of going after Haye in the later rounds of the fight.

Docking part of the prize money for Harrison is not really going to achieve anything and further more it should be considered that both boxers were pitiful to watch. Perhaps the BBB should have considered docking the pay of both boxers as in reality they both failed to deliver.

Fernando Montiel vs. Nonito Donaire - February 19, 2024

Las Vegas hosts its first world title fight of 2011 when World Bantamweight Champion FERNANDO “Cochulito” MONTIEL defends his title against two-division world champion NONITO “The Filipino Flash” DONAIRE

LAS VEGAS, NEV (January 10, 2024) At today’s presser at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, fireworks was the key word used by both fighters, trainers and their promoters. And on on February 19, nothing less than fireworks are expected, when Fernando Montiel and Nonito Donaire step into the ring to decide the closest thing to an undisputed bantam champion you’re likely to see in this day and age.

“Montiel vs. Donaire is a terrific way to kickoff the season premiere of Boxing After Dark between the two biggest little guys in the sport,” said Kery Davis, senior vice president of programming for HBO Sports. “Fans fights are in for a big night, particularly with the Mike Jones and Jesus Soto-Karass rematch leading off our telecast.”

“Eighteen years ago I promoted a fight with two 108-pound world champions which was one of the greatest events I ever promoted — Michael Carbajal vs. Humberto Gonzalez at the Las Vegas Hilton. It proved to everyone that dynamite can come in all size of packages,” said Hall of Fame promoter and CEO of Top Rank, Bob Arum. “Montiel vs. Donaire at Mandalay Bay on February 19 will feature a matchup between two hard-punching bantamweights that is every bit as explosive as Carbajal-Gonzalez. It’s a can’t- miss fight and the fans will be assured of seeing a dynamite event.

“Fernando Montiel is the best fighter I have ever faced and certainly the toughest challenge of my professional career,” said Donaire. “It’s going to be a battle of strength and will. I’m leaving nothing to chance in training and when the final bell rings on February 19, the Philippines will have another mark in the victory column against México.”

Montiel said: “It is a very important fight for me and a great opportunity to prove that I am one of the best fighters in the world. I expect a tough fight, but I also expect to win.” “I’m not preparing myself for one war,” - “I’m preparing myself for two wars. I’m that sure of a rematch.”

Filipino boxer Nonito Donaire Jr. is a two-division world champion known for his switch hits and ability to fight either southpaw or orthodox. Donaire is the WBC Continental Americas Bantamweight Champion and the number five pound-for-pound boxer in the world according to The Ring. Nonito Donaire, Jr. has a professional boxing record of won 25 (KO 17) + lost 1 (KO 0) + drawn 0 = 26.

Mexican boxer Fernando Montiel is currently the WBO and WBC Bantamweight champion and rated as the number seven pound-for-pound boxer by The Ring. Fernando Montiel has a professional boxing record of won 43 (KO 33) + lost 2 (KO 0) + drawn 2 = 47.

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Zanfer Promotions, the Montiel-Donaire world title tilt will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark, beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast.) The broadcast will open with undefeated NABO/NABA/WBC Continental Americas welterweight champion MIKE JONES defending his titles against Top-10 contender JESUS SOTO-KARASS in a rematch of their exciting battle which took place on November 13 under the Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito card.
