GB Boxing In Top Condition

BOXERS from the GB Boxing Olympic squad won every category in this weekend’s (12/13 November 2010) first ever GB Amateur Boxing Championship at the Echo Arena Liverpool.

The competition, which pitted the best amateurs from England, Scotland and Wales against GB Boxing’s first choice boxers, saw nine victories for Great Britain and two for England. All eleven of the winners are members of GB Boxing’s Podium or Development squads.

“This has been an excellent weekend of boxing and a very good test for the men and women on the GB boxing programme,” said GB Boxing’s Performance Director, Rob McCracken. “There have been some excellent performances in the competition and it will certainly have an influence on the evolution of the Olympic programme next year as we build up to 2012.”

The Championship was screened live on the BBC’s red button. It featured a number of long–awaited clashes and was the first time that men and women have competed on the same bill to be crowned Champion of Great Britain.

In the men’s Bantamweight (56Kg) category, Luke Campbell, competing for England, confirmed his return to form with a 23-6 victory of 2010 European Championship silver medallist Iain Weaver.

It was followed by a titanic clash in the women’s 60Kg category between long-standing rivals for the Olympic slot, Natasha Jonas and Amanda Coulson. Boxing in front of her home crowd, Jonas built up a 9-6 lead before Coulson rallied in the last round to draw level at 10 points all. As the crowd cheered a fantastic advert for the women’s sport, Jonas landed a scoring blow in the dying seconds to clinch a narrow 11-10 victory in the bout of the evening.

In the 69Kg category, Commonwealth silver medallist, Callum Smith confirmed himself as Great Britain’s number one Welterweight with a victory over local rival and Anthony Fowler. Fellow Commonwealth medallist, Anthony Ogogo, did the same at Middleweight with an 8-4 win against Keiron Harding from Wales.

At Heavyweight (91Kg), Simon Vallily overcame England’s highly experienced ABA Champion, Danny Price in a close fought 4-3 win.

An ankle injury picked-up in Friday’s semi-final meant Martin Ward was unable to compete against Liverpool’s Tom Stalker in the 60Kg category, so Scotland’s Josh Taylor stepped-in to take on the home favourite in a re-match of the recent Commonwealth Games final. In a non-Championship contest, the young Scot looked to be on the way to avenging his defeat in Delhi before a final round rally from Stalker edged him to a 10-9 victory.

A stunning last round saw Oldham’s Tommy Stubbs come from 8-4 down to beat Wales’ Andrew Selby 10-9 in the Flyweight (52Kg) category.

Earlier in the evening, Croydon’s 17-year old Charlie Edwards served notice of his talent with a convincing 18-5 win over Wales’ Ben Baker at Light-Flyweight (49Kg). In the women’s 51Kg category, two-time World silver medallist Nicola Adams showed her class with a 19-2 win over Lynsey Holdaway from Wales.

After Friday’s edge-of-the seat semi-final win over Scott Cardle in the bout of the Championship, Bradley Saunders had an easier night in the 64Kg final stopping Scotland’s Jason Easton the second round. In the 81Kg, Obed Mbwakango secured victory for GB Boxing with a first round stoppage against Scotland’s Sean Finney.

Full results:

49Kg - Charlie Edwards (GB) beat Ben Baker (WAL), 18-5

51Kg – Nicola Adams (GB) beat Lynsey Holdaway (WAL), 19-2

GB Boxing Championships - 13 November

alt

The GB Boxing Championships finals which will be held this Saturday at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on the 13th of November, will pit the best from Scotland, England and Wales against current members of the GB boxing Olympic squad and create an opportunity for those who are not in the squad to force their way into contention for the London 2012 Olympics.

The semi-finals will be held on Friday 12 November from 3.00pm (doors open 2.00pm). The finals will be on Saturday 13 November from 7.30pm (doors open 6.30pm) and will be televised live on BBC.

The BBC commentary will come from Jim Neilly and Richie Woodhall with Steve Bunce providing punditry.

The man with responsibility for selecting and training the GB Boxing squad that will compete at the 2012 Olympics, Rob McCracken, Performance Director of the British Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) said: “This will be a very high quality tournament and reflects the huge depth of talent we have in amateur boxing in Great Britain at the present time. The success of all of the Home Nations at the Commonwealth Games means we can expect to see some great match-ups in every weight category.

“Staging this event in a large arena mean it will be the biggest crowd that most of the boxers will have competed in front of and will provide a good indication of who can handle the occasion and deliver a winning performance under intense pressure. It will have an influence on the make-up of the Olympic squad and is an opportunity for all of the competitors to showcase their skills and stake a claim to be part of the GB Boxing set-up as we build-up to 2012.”

In the 60 Kg category, there is an early opportunity for Scotland’s Josh Taylor to try and avenge the 11-3 defeat inflicted on him by England’s Tom Stalker in the recent Commonwealth Games final. It also features hotly-tipped Martin Ward from England who was identified by many observers as the best boxer on show in the English ABA finals in May 2010.

At 56Kg, Welsh teen sensation Sean McGoldrick will be hoping to add to his Commonwealth Silver medal when he takes on the 2010 European Championship Silver medallist, Iain Weaver, and the 2008 European Champion, Luke Campbell.

Two more medallists from 2010’s European Championships feature at 52Kg where Andrew Selby from Wales is against Beijing Olympian, Khalid Yafai. Both are part of the GB Boxing squad, so the GB Championship will provide an opportunity for Selby to challenge Yafai’s status as the current number one ahead of the Olympic qualifying competitions in 2011.

The 81Kg category includes Welsh ABA Champion and Commonwealth bronze medallist Jermaine Asare against English ABA Champion Lawrence Osueke. They will be pitted against GB Boxing’s, Obed Mbwakango and Scotland’s Sean Finney.

One of the most hotly anticipated contests for the Liverpool crowd will be at 69Kg where two local favourites, Callum Smith and Anthony Fowler will compete. Although Smith is the current GB Boxing selection and recently won Silver at the Commonwealth Games he was defeated by Fowler en-route to his English ABA title in 2010.

75Kgs brings together two current ABA Champions and Commonwealth Games medallists in Wales’ Keiron Harding and GB Boxing’s Anthony Ogogo. And at 91Kg, two former members of the GB Boxing squad, Stephen Simmons from Scotland and Danny Price of England will be hoping to force their way back into contention for 2012 when they come up against GB Boxing’s Commonwealth Gold sensation, Simon Vallily.

The women’s competition includes two current national ABA Champions and two World Silver medallists. The 51Kg category features two-time World Silver medallist Nicola Adams, ABA Champion and fellow GB Boxing squad member, Nina Smith, and Lynsey Holdaway from Wales.

The 60Kg category will be hotly contested and brings together two closely matched members of the GB Boxing squad, Natasha Jonas and Amanda Coulson, along with Wales’s Becky Price.

Problems with form and fitness mean there are no candidates from England, Scotland and Wales to challenge, GB Boxing’s World Silver medallist, Savannah Marshall in the 75Kg category. Instead Marshall will compete in a non-title bout against an overseas opponent.

UK Boxing - I’ll Humiliate El Maachi Says Colas

By Rio

London - Monday 8th November 2010

I’ll Humiliate El Maachi Says Jimmy Colas Ahead Of Dec 4th Title Clash
.
WBC Latino Light Middleweight Champion Jimmy Colas today spoke for the first time about his upcoming International Masters clash with Yassine El Maachi at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Judgement Day’ double title super show at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th December.
.
“I am coming to England as I want to show the British public who Jimmy Colas is and this will be nothing more than an exhibition match.” said the France based Haitian before continuing, “There is no British Light Middleweight who can beat me. El Maachi is not even in the top 10 of what I consider to be your poor quality boxers. In Britain you all protect your boxers.”

Although having fought most of his fights in France, Colas has shown that he is not just happy to travel, having traveled to Germany to secure the European Union Light Middleweight title in 2005 and Haiti when he won the WBC Latino title last year, but actively craves fighting on the world scene.
.
“I fight anybody and when the chance came to fight El Maachi I jumped at it. I have looked at El Maachi on the internet and he offers nothing.” before turning his focus beyond the El Maachi clash, “It will be an easy fight for me and then I want to box Lukas Konecny for the European title. I lost a majority points decision, hotly disputed which I really won, in 2009 to Konecny and look what he did to your Matthew Hall.”
.
The importance of this contest is not lost on Colas, or El Maachi to that matter, as the victor will rocket up the world rankings. However Colas is in bullish mood and makes it quite clear that he intends that it will be him in contention for a world title shot in 2011 with his parting shot, “El Maachi will be humiliated in front of his own fans. I will make it a painful night for him.”
.
Yassine El Maachi versus Jimmy Colas for the International Masters Light Middleweight title will take place at the Steve Goodwin promoted “JUDGEMENT DAY” double title super show at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday the 4th December 2010.
Co-headlining ‘Judgement Day’ will be Ryan ‘Mr Attitude’ Barrett who will be defending his newly won International Masters Lightweight title, against the heavy hitting Hungarian knockout artist Istvan Nagy.
.
There are no less than twelve top class support fights including the highly anticipated all girl Featherweight clash, rescheduled from September 11th, between Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym’s Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston, and the highly experienced Welsh battler Lana Cooper.
.
Tickets for Judgement Day at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th December 2010 are on sale now - priced £35 (Unreserved) or £60 (Ringside).

UK Boxing - ‘Judgement Day’

By Rio

London - Friday 5th November 2010

Ticket Sales ‘Through The Roof’ For El Maachi vs Colas - Barrett vs Nagy Double Title Show

The demand for tickets for ‘Judgement Day’ Double title spectacular at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th December 2010 is so high that it is expected that the show will be sold out by mid-November.

A smiling Steve Goodwin, the promoter of ‘Judgement Day’, spoke briefly on the situation, “The demand for tickets for Judgement Day have just gone through the roof. This just goes to show that the demand for quality boxing events in London is still strong and the public enjoy a well promoted shows featuring exciting well matched fights.

Demand has been so high we decided to restrict the tickets available to the fighters on the show. We’re predicting the show will be sold out within the next week or two.“

Its no surprise tickets are going fast as this don’t miss event features no less than 14 top class fights and is headlined by the explosive Yassine El Maachi, who is set to defend his International Masters Light Middleweight title, against the seriously tough France based Haitian Jimmy Colas.

El Maachi, who won the vacant title back in April following a scintillating battle with France’s Bertrand Aloa, will have his work cut out as Colas, who is currently fourth in the European Light Middleweight rankings, has an impressive championship record that includes his being the French Light Middleweight Champion, which he defended twice, a two time EBU Light Middleweight Champion and he is the current WBC Latino Light Middleweight Champion.

El Maachi appears to relish the opportunity to take on such serious competition having recently stated, “Steve (Goodwin) has unveiled a gem and got the European number 4 over for me. I know this is costing him money and I really appreciate him backing me like this. No one has ever done this for me before and I will repay him by putting on a fantastic show and destroying Colas.

Colas has never met a fighter like me before and I will use angles and frustrate him and ultimately toy with him. Colas is a similar type of boxer to Matthew Hall and I would have knocked out Matthew Hall. Unfortunately Kocelny got there first.”

Co-headlining ‘Judgement Day’ will be Ryan ‘Mr Attitude’ Barrett who will be defending his newly won International Masters Lightweight title, against the heavy hitting Hungarian knockout artist Istvan Nagy. (Please click below to read the rest of this article)

Headlining the show will be former International Masters Light Middleweight Champion Kevin Hammond, who will be looking to turn round a three fight loss run, against Luke Osman
.
Hammond, who following his winning the International Masters title had two tough fights with recent British title challenger Martin ‘Immaculate’ Concepcion for the Midlands Area title,
.
Hammond came close to winning both, even sent Concepcion to the canvas on their second meeting, as in each case only one point was the difference between the two.

In his most recent bout, against Kurt Bromberg for the British Masters Middleweight title, again Hammond fought hard and was unlucky not to get the decision. Again the points difference was just a single point.

There will be five exciting match-ups supporting the Hammond versus Osman bout. Co-feature fight sees Newark’s Andrew (A.A.) Lowe take on tough Bristol based Turk Rocky Chakir in a six round Welterweight contest.

Next up, and probably deserving of headline status, is the highly popular Bulwell, Notts Cruiserweight/Heavyweight Shane McPhilbin will face a stern test against the highly experienced Brummy bruiser Hastings Rasani in a four round Cruiserweight clash.

McPhilbin recently stole the limelight from his more experienced competition at the Sky televised Prizefighter - Heavyweights 4 tournament, after stopping the previously unbeaten Declan Timlin after just fifty seconds of the second round. McPhilbin then went on to face eventual tournament winner Michael Sprott in one of the most exciting action packed bouts of the evening.
.
Rounding out the show will be two debut bouts, the first at Light Heavyweight, featuring Newark’s Jamie Norkett against new boy Ian Jenkins and Danny Gerrard gets his maiden outing against the highly experienced Ryan Clark. The final listed bout features Sneinton, Notts Terry Maughan in a Middleweight contest against a yet to be named opponent.

London - Wednesday 20th October 2010

Marston-Cooper Showdown Set For 4th Dec London Super Show

The highly anticipated Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston versus Lana Cooper Featherweight clash, originally scheduled for September 11th, is now set to feature on Steve Goodwin’s Super Show ‘Judgement Day’ at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on the 4th December 2010.

Marianne, who recently resumed her full fight training camp, which was suspended in August following the news that the planned September fight was to be rescheduled, at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London, said of the news. “I was very disappointed when the September fight had to be called off, but that’s life, now I am fully focused on the 4th December.

I know Lana will be up for it, she always comes to fight, but I’m at the best gym in London and have the best team in England coaching me so I will be 110% ready for her.”

Marianne’s team, manager Johnny Eames and coach Derek Grainger, are taking her preparations seriously and have top class sparring lined up for her over the coming weeks, including drafting in Big Brother star and highly experienced Welterweight campaigner Angel McKenzie as her main sparring partner.

Additional sparring with unbeaten Bantamweight Laura Norton, Olympic hopeful Lightweight Ruth Raper and Lana Cooper’s previous opponent, Great Britain’s number one Lightweight Laura Saperstein, will be added to the mix throughout November.

On the planned sparring Marianne said, “What a coup, Angel and Laura Saperstein have both fought Lana before. They know her style and I’m sure their experience and advice will give me an edge on the night.

I can’t wait to start sparring with Angel again, we had some great sparring wars last year. I’ve also sparred Ruth before, she’s a class act, but I’ve yet to spar either Laura Norton or Laura Saperstein, both are unbeaten as pros, so I’m really looking forward to sparring them.

With quality sparring like this I will be so ready for Lana. I can’t wait for December 4th.”

Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston versus Lana Cooper will be supporting Yassine El Maachi defense of his International Masters Light Middleweight title, against the seriously tough France based Haitian Jimmy Colas at the Steve Goodwin promoted “JUDGEMENT DAY” double title event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday the 4th December 2010.

Co-headlining ‘Judgement Day’ will be Ryan ‘Mr Attitude’ Barrett who will be defending his newly won International Masters Lightweight title, against a yet to be named opponent.

There are no less than twelve top class support fights including Marianne’s Ultrachem TKO team mate ‘Saint’ George Jupp, against a yet to be named opponent.

‘Saint’ George, one of the rising stars from Johnny Eames’ stable, has quickly established himself as ‘one-to-watch’ following his magnificent stylish performance against the highly experienced Pavels Senkovs back in September.

Fresh from his superb victory, over veteran Hastings Rasani, the highly popular Essex Cruiserweight Tony ‘The Conqueror’ Conquest will again be in action and looking to extend his unbeaten record against a yet to be named opponent.

Tony’s gym mate, the highly entertaining Welterweight John Wayne Hibbert, will be making his welcome return to the York Hall. The Stetson wearing Hibbert is an all action fighter with a knockout reputation - four stoppage finishes in his six outings to date.

Waltham Abbey’s Phil Gill, AKA ‘The Experience’, will be looking to increase his unbeaten record to seven, whilst Light Middleweight War Lord Michael ‘The Zambezi Hitman’ Norgrove will be looking to take his unbeaten record to four.

Bethnal Green’s own Jamie Arlain gets his second outing, as is Islington’s John ‘The Gorilla’ Ryder, who will be looking to emulate his stunning debut victory. So far Ryder has had just 90 seconds of ring action. That’s right it took him just half a round to beat the hapless Ben Denghani into submission.

Another single fight veteran with an early knockout record is Ely, Cambs Light Welterweight Tyler Goodjohn. His first victim, Dale Hutchinson, staying the course 264 seconds longer than Denghani did with Ryder.

Rounding out the show are three debutants. Super Featherweight Richard Hines, Light Welterweight Charlie Kelly and another of Marianne’’s Ultrachem TKO Gym mates Super Middleweight Brett O’Callaghan.

‘Judgement Day’ - ‘Saint’ George Jupp

By Rio

London - Tuesday 19th October 2010
.
‘Saint’ George Jupp Added To Dec 4th Mega York Hall Show - ‘Judgement Day’
.
With just two pro fights under his belt Belvadere’s ‘Saint’ George Jupp is already proving to be something of a sensation. So much so that promoter Steve Goodwin has invited George to be part of his double title headlined super show ‘Judgement Day’ at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th December.

The invitation from Steve Goodwin follows George’s exceptional performance, against Latvian hard man Pavels Senkovs, at his ‘It’s Personal’ event back in September, where George thrilled the York Hall crowd with a true boxing master class.

Right from the opening bell ‘St George’ plain outclassed Senkovs with slick long jabs and lightning fast hands. Senkovs constantly tried to bully his way back into the fight but nineteen year old George showed a maturity that belied his tender age, by not being drawn into a dangerous toe-to-toe slugging match. After four scintillating rounds George was rewarded with a shutout 40-36 points decision, as well as a much deserved standing ovation from the packed house.

Following a sparring session with Ian Bailey, at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London, George spoke briefly about his performance against Pavels Senkovs and his preparations for the upcoming fight. “That was a good fight, Pavels’ a come forward type but I kept to my boxing, just picking him off with my jabs and hard right shots. I just stuck with my boxing and won it easily on points.

Every time I fight I improve a little bit. I boxed well before but when I watched the dvd there were some things I think I could improve on or moved back to a different thing.
.
I’m not going to give anything away but we’ve been working on some new stuff in the gym so at my next fight there’ll be a few new tricks.”

‘Saint’ George Jupp against a yet to be named opponent will be on the support card when Yassine El Maachi defends his International Masters Light Middleweight title, against the seriously tough France based Haitian Jimmy Colas at the Steve Goodwin promoted “JUDGEMENT DAY” double title event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday the 4th December 2010.
