.

  • Bozic injury confirmed - WBA #9 super middleweight Stjepan Bozic has been diagnosed with ligament damage to his index finger metacarpophalangeal joint – probably an old injury that was aggrevated when he punched Arthur Abraham’s elbow on February 12. On Thursday the Sauerland team received the official medical documentation and MRI results from Croatia and ring doctor Dr. Hubert Klauser, a specialist for orthopedics, surgery and hand surgery, confirmed the injury after viewing the supplied information, adding that Bozic should do no punching for at least six weeks and put stress on the hand only sparingly. The findings vindicate Bozic who was accused of faking the injury. “I’m no actor,” said Bozic. “I would have gladly given the fans a longer fight with an another, better ending. Unfortunately, with the injury it wasn’t possible, as confirmed by the MRI.”

.

  • Daws vs Theophane - Morden’s British light-welterweight champion ”Lightning” Lenny Daws can claim outright ownership of a Lonsdale belt and improve on his European and world title aspirations when he makes the third defence of his British light welterweight title against Kilburn’s Ashley Theophane on Mick Hennessy’s exciting bill at London’s Wembley Arena on Saturday night.

Martinez-Dzinziruk takes places at Foxwoods Casino in Ledyard, Conn. If Holt (26-4, 14 KOs), a Paterson native and Woodland Park resident, wins that non-televised bout he is likely to face former lightweight champ Julio Diaz (38-6, 27 KOs) in an ESPN2 main event May 13 at a site to be determined. Concepción is a great champion, but I have no doubt that I’ll win. I know I’m at his home, but I trust the judges and referee will be appointed by the WBA and work with great impartiality. I’ll be in the ring with Concepcion and it will be a great fight for the public because we both like to exchange punches,” said Marquez.

UK Boxing: Mitchell Balker “Unleash The Fury”

By Rio

London - Wednesday, 16th February 2011

Mitchell Balker Added To Unleash The Fury At York Hall 5th March

Exciting London based Dutch Cruiserweight prospect Mitchell Balker is to make his third UK outing, against Doncaster’s John Anthony, at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘UNLEASH THE FURY’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, on Saturday 5th March 2011.

Balker’s performance on his last outing, against Nick Okoth at the excellent Graham Earl promoted ‘Capital Punishment’ Event in January, was pure quality.

Balker’s savvy ring craft proved to be too much for ‘The Ox’. Right from the start Balker controlled the fight utilising crisp jabs to keep Okoth on the defensive before moving in to land solid jabs and right hands before stepping aside to thwart any return salvos from the heavy handed Okoth.

Round two see Okoth charge from his corner before swinging wildly in a effort to gain a semblance of control. Balker kept calm and stayed out of trouble by moving out of range and occasionally letting rip with clinical lefts and rights that slowed the advancing Okoth considerably.

Round three see Balker step things up a notch and just plain out box Okoth with crisp jabs and wicked combinations. Each time Okoth advanced Balker would let him back him onto the ropes before spinning Okoth and launching a controlled attack of his own. Often to the head but sometimes with a peach of a three punch combination that ended with a solid left to the body.

Round four was more of the same and it was no surprise that come the final bell the referee declared Balker the winner by a clear 40-36 points margin.

Following a training session at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London, Balker spoke of the bout with Nick Okoth as well as the upcoming fight with John Anthony, “As always I am in good shape, I’m always in the gym . I’m ready for it, I’m ready to go.

I enjoyed my last fight against Nick Okoth. I had good training, I did what I was supposed to do. Good Boxing, crisp good jab and yeah I did a good job.

On the 5th what you are going to see is Mitchell Balker in top condition and I’m ready to go. If it goes longer rounds, then I’m ready to go longer rounds. If it’s an early stoppage, then it’s an early stoppage. I’m just happy to fight again.

I’ve been sparring with good guys. I’ve been sparring with Manny (Emmanuel Oshunrinde), our very own Manny Pacquiao, I’ve sparred with Leon (Southern Area Cruiserweight Champ Leon ‘Solid’ Williams), I sparred today with a Heavyweight, I sparred with Caine (Caine Brodie). Caine will be on the same show.

TKO is a very good gym, very good gym for sparring. I spar three or four times in a week. You’ve got terrific sparring here. TKO gym is a good gym for sparring.

Let’s just make a good show of it. Lets have Caine win and me win. It’s a good thing, a good thing.”

Johnny Eames, Balker’s manager and co-trainer, then added, “Mitchell is in action again on the 5th March against John Anthony.

We’re really pleased for Mitchell, our TKO Box Office site has enabled us to give Mitchell a couple of fights as the house fighter which I think all prospects, which I consider Mitchell a prospect, deserve to be the house fighters.

I’m pretty certain from his attitude and his application and his training that he’ll put in another good performance. You know and then if myself and Rio can keep him in the house corner, through our TKO Box Office site, then so be it and I’m sure he’ll prosper from it.

Yeah, I’m pretty certain it’ll be another good win for Mitchell.”

Mitchell Balker versus John Anthony will be main support to Toks Owoh versus Billy Boyle at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Unleash The Fury’ event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 5th March 2011.

The Unleash The Fury undercard features some of London’s best upcoming talents and including Balker’s Ultrachem TKO Gym mate ‘Dynamo’ Daryl Setterfield against Birmingham’s Andrew ‘Paddy’ Patterson.

Minster. Kent Light Heavyweight Dan ‘Woody’ Woodgate gets his third outing against Retford’s Lee Nicholson and Waltham Abbey Light Welterweight Phil Gill looks to take his unbeaten run to ten against Aysham’s Scott Moises.

Luton Lightweight Michael ‘Chunky’ Devine makes his welcome return to the ring, following his coveted ‘0’ to Mark ‘The Flash’ Alexander last year, and will be looking to get back to winning ways against the highly experienced Daniel Thorpe.

Biggleswade Light Middleweight Jamie Boness will be looking to extend his unbeaten record against Guildford’s Louis Byrne and Woolwich Super Middleweight Eder Kurti faces Welsh banger Jamie Ambler.

Unbeaten, in twelve, Hackney Middleweight Wayne Alwan-Arab is set to face Tooting based Bulgarian Danny Dontchev.

Another of Balker’s Ultrachem TKO gym mates, Caine Brodie, also features on the card against a yet to be named opponent.

Making their pro debuts at ‘Unleash The Fury’ are Harlesden Lightweight Met Sekiraqa, against Robin Deakin and former World Kick Boxing Champion, Llir Canolli, from Cosavo, against a yet to be named opponent.

Tickets for Unleash The Fury at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 5th March 2011 are on sale now - priced £35 (Unreserved) or £60 (Ringside).

For tickets call: 07960 850645, book on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at The Ultrachem TKO Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA.

Clearly the underdog, not only was this his first fight in the Welterweight division but Bradley was championship ready having prepared to challenge Sam Webb for his British Light Middleweight belt until the fight was called off, surprised most observers by not just holding his own but actually dominate two thirds of the rounds to earn an against the odds 77-76 points victory.

In the Ring with Marvin Hart

Review of Adam Pollack’s In the Ring with Marvin Hart

By Zachary Q. Daniels - Perhaps even more than the earlier installments of his excellent series on the heavyweightchampions, Adam Pollack’s In the Ring with Marvin Hart fills a gap in the boxing literature. For while his well-researched works on Sullivan, Corbett, Fitzsimmons and Jeffries undoubtedly provided additional understanding of the boxing careers of these men, as a result of his unique reliance on local primary source accounts to cover events, these were also boxers whose lives and careers had been the subject of some attention before. Not so with Marvin Hart.

Hart is not only, as Pollack notes “one of the least known heavyweight champions,” he is probably the least-written about of the many men who have held the title in the past. No biographies have ever been published, nor did Hart himself write an autobiography. This may be unique among heavyweight champions, the more famous of whom are among the most written-about of all athletes. As surprising as it seems, this is actually the first biography of Hart that has been published. Clearly, then, Pollack’s book fills a gaping void.

As usual, he applies his thorough research techniques, relying on primary source accounts to trace Hart’s career from its beginnings in 1900 to its termination in 1910. Hart’s early fights in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky with such men as William Schiller, Hugh ”Kid Hubert” McGann, Pete Traynor, Tommy West, Dan Creedon and others are all covered. Most of these fights ended in KO, establishing Hart as a thunderous puncher who could “hit as hard as mule’s kick.

In perhaps his first important step up in competition, he took on Chicago’s Billy Stift in 1902, and knocked him out in the 3rd. This was followed by an even more significant step up against Eddie “Kid” Carter of Brooklyn, NY, which Hart won by KO in the 9th round. This fight was the one that really first established Hart as an up and coming contender, initially as a light heavyweight. After a decision victory in his rematch with Stift in Chicago - Hart’s first fight outside of Louisville - he took a second fight against Carter in Philadelphia. Although this fight officially ended in a “no decision,” most observers felt Hart had won.

In another important fight, Hart took on light heavyweight contender Jack Root in Chicago, which he lost by six round decision. This setback did not deter Hart from pressing forward, and as Pollack reports, he fought only nine days later against top contender (and later light heavyweight champion) “Philadelphia” Jack O’Brien, in O’Brien’s hometown of Philadelphia. It was a very competitive fight in which both men were hurt, ending in a no decision. Although O’Brien landed more punches, Hart had O’Brien clearly hurt and “ready to go” as the bell rang to end the fight. A rematch had similar results, with O’Brien down and almost out at the end of six rounds.

Hart then took an important fight with light heavyweight contender George Gardiner in May, which he lost by retirement, due to a broken hand. After the hand healed, he took on longtime heavyweight contender Joe Choynski in another no decision fight, which most observers believed to be a draw. Hart’s performance in these various six round fights leads Pollack to observe that he “was a fighter ideal for the finish fight, but also one whom the cleverest…. • WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm (34-2-1, 14 KO’s) will continue with his practice of dipping down in the bottom of the WBA rankings to find his opponents when he takes on number #12 WBA ranked Ronald Hearns (26-1, 20 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Porsche Arena, in Stuffgart, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. Pacquiao Meets President Obama: Talks Boxing, Basketball

By Michael Marley

Manny Pacquiao and his lovely wife, Jinkee, could be described as knocked out by their meeting with President Barack Obama Tuesday afternoon.

“Only Manny and Jinkee were invited inside,” the 32-year-old Pacquiao’s agent, Michael Koncz, told me. “Manny was thrilled that President Obama took time away from his busy schedule, with all the important world and national events and issues he’s facing, to talk to him.”

Koncz estimated the total time of the meet and greet which took place in the Oval Office “at about 15 minutes” Koncz said that First Lady Michelle Obama was not present.

“You could see the excitement in Manny’s face when he came out of there,” Koncz said.

The presidential meeting was set up by Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, who earlier in the day praised the Fighting Congressman from Sarangani on the floor of the Senate and then held a brief news conference with the boxer who campaigned for him in November when Reid held off Tea Party challenger Sharron Angle to retain his powerful position.

What did President Obama and Pacman talk about?

“Well,” Koncz said, “they talked mainly about basketball and boxing. The president said he would watch the (Sugar Shane) Mosley fight on pay-per-view TV and said he will be be cheering for Manny.

“Manny was just very excited by the whole situation. I’d say that Jinkee was more nervous. Jinkee was just overwhelmed by all this.”

Koncz said the Pacquiao traveling party, including lifelong liberal Democrat and one-time Robert F. Kennedy assistant US attorney turned fight promoter Bob Arum, was heading out for dinner in the nation’s capital.

Pacman is heading for Los Angeles before jetting back home to Manila while Arum will return to Las Vegas where he lives and will present a fight card featuring Pinoy star Nonito Donaire against Fernando Montiel of Mexico Saturday night at Mandalay Bay, which will be televised on HBO
