UK Boxing: Fight Report - Unleash The Fury
Fight Report - Unleash The Fury, York Hall Saturday March 5th
By Gianluca (Rio) Di Caro
On Saturday night , at York Hall in Bethnal Green, was the first of two events to celebrate Steve Goodwin’s first year as a boxing promoter. Over the past year Steve has promoted some of the biggest and best events in the Capital for a long, long while.
It was his intention to put on two massive shows in March but fate stepped in to decimate the card for his first.
In the run up to the show Steve had fighters dropping out like flies, some due to injury others down to an inability to shift the required level of tickets whilst others suffered due to the lack of opponents - various opponents had to withdraw due to being stopped in their fights the previous weekend. To add insult to injury there were so many shows on this weekend that available opponents were rarer than hens teeth.
At the start of play instead of the anticipated fourteen bouts there were just seven. Saying that they were seven highly entertaining all action bouts.
Whilst the Toks Owoh - against a very late replacement Remigijus Ziausys, who took the fight with 24 hours notice and see him arrive in England on Saturday morning - was the headline bout I have decided to report the excellent, albeit shortened, event from show opener to final bout in that order as virtually every fight was worthy of headline status.
Phil Gill versus Jason Nesbitt
One thing you can guarantee when Phil Gill is in the ring it will be an all action affair. Sure enough that’s what the York Hall crowd were to get. Gill went to work hard and fast right from the opening bell, letting rip with both hands throughout the first round. His excellent ring craft barely allowed Nesbitt get any meaningful shots of his own in.
Gill didn’t quite get to dominate the second round quite to the level of the first as Nesbitt managed to find his range and let go with a couple of cracking right hands to the body. Gill didn’t drop the pace and just responded with even more fast powerful left and rights.
Round three was more even with both protagonists letting rip with shot after shot in quick succession, in fact this round could have gone to either way as both came so close to stopping the other at one point.
In the first minute Gill let rip with a cracking left-right body head combination but was unable to finish off the clearly shaken Nesbitt. From then on it was a punch trading war until the final seconds when Nesbitt turned the tables with a hard right to the body that really rattled Gill, Nesbitt turned the tables and started to let rip with both hands until the final bell.
The final round was much as before, with both pushing hard. Throughout the contest Gill had not only thrown more shots but also landed the most meaningful ones and was rightly pronounced victor by a 39-37 points margin.
Wayne Alwan-Arab versus Danny Dontchev
Danny Dontchev’s a great ambassador for the sport, doesn’t win that many bouts but always comes to fight. On Saturday night he lost again, this time to the unbeaten in twelve Wayne Alwan-Arab, albeit rather contentiously in my view as I felt he had earned a draw at very least if not the win.
Alwan-Arab dominate a good percentage of the first round but Dontchev gave more than just a good account of himself, especially in the final minute of the round where he pressured Alwan-Arab back onto the ropes and let rip with flurry after flurry of punches.
Alwan-Arab shot out the trap at the start of the second and started to really pressure Dontchev. It was far from one way traffic though as Dontchev dug in and really tested the young Hackney based Zimbabwean throughout. I see the round a draw
Round three see Dontchev starting like a rocket and step up the pressure on Alwan-Arab. Throughout the round Dontchev kept pressing as well as landing some cracking right hands. It was a very good round for Dontchev.
Round four was more of the same and a surefire upset win for Dontchev looked on the cards, that is until about midway through the round when Dontchev slipped as he closed in on a fast retreating Alwan-Arab. Surprisingly the referee continued the count started by the timekeeper even though it was a clear slip. The crowd showed their disapproval of the count and Dontchev protested but to no avail. Dontchev stepped up the pressure but time wasn’t on his side.
When the referee’s scorecard was read out - a shutout 40-35 points victory for Alwan-Arab - the crowd again showed their disapproval.
Eder Kurti versus Jodie Meikle
Woolwich based Albanian Super Middleweight Eder Kurti received a rapturous welcome as he made his way to the ring to face Scunthorpe’s Jody Meikle. The cheers barely subsided the whole bout as Kurti gave a magnificent display of boxing.
From start to finish Kurti pressured Meikle, letting rip with heavy lefts and rights to body and head. As early as round two Meikle was already bearing the scars of battle, with blood pouring from a nasty cut to the bridge of the nose.
Round three see Kurti set about Meikle with heavy rights to the head and body. Somehow Miekle managed to survive the constant onslaught, but at a cost as the cut on his nose had visibly worsened, so much so that the referee took a long hard look before allowing Miekle to come out for the fourth.
Kurti was magnificent throughout the final round to earn a 40-37 points victory.
Toks Owoh versus Remigijus Ziausys
Toks Owoh put on a beautiful, controlled display from start to finish. He barely seemed to break a sweat throughout and used his stinging jab to keep the forward pushing late replacement Remigijus Ziausys at bay.
Owoh kept the pace comfortable and appeared to be looking to get the rounds under his belt rather than go for an early finish. Saying that on a couple of occasions Owoh shaped up and looked set to shift out of cruise control and go for a knockout finish, alas it was only momentary as he would quickly revert to using the jab and occasional heavy right.
Whilst it wasn’t the sort of ‘dog fight’ performance long time fans of Owoh are used to, it was a very tidy and totally dominating one. As I had said there were flashes of ‘The Viper’ of old and am sure that should an opponent of right calibre be available in the future the warlord in Owoh will come to the fore and fans will be treated once again to the battle royales we have come to expect from him.
Dan Woodgate versus Jamie Norkett
It’s hard to believe that Minster, Kent’s Dan ‘Woody’ Woodgate has had only two professional bouts, his performance on Saturday night was more in keeping with a seasoned championship campaigner.
Classy and slick are words that come to mind to describe Woodgate’s performance against Newark’s Jamie Norkett. From start to finish Woodgate dominated proceedings and in the later rounds looked as if he could have finished the fight at will, having rocked the durable Norkett on various occasions.
Don’t go thinking Norkett hadn’t come to fight, he had, just Woodgate was in a class of his own and rightly deserved the 40-37 point victory.
Jamie Boness versus Louis Byrne
Bigglewade’s Jamie Boness had his hands full with Guildford’s Louis Byrne. Throughout the bout the pair went at it hammer and tongs. Rounds one and two I see in favour of Boness just because he landed the more meaningful punches.
Round three was a much closer affair, with each controlling the action at times. Round four was a cracker and see both going all out for an early finish. In the end it was Boness that had secured the win by a very close 39-38 points margin.
Met Sekiraqi versus Floyd Moore
The final fight of the night saw the much hyped debut of Harlesden based Kosovon Met Sekiraqi, against Fareham’s Floyd Moore. The reception Sekiraqi received from the three hundred plus Kosovons in the audience was so loud you would have thought there were three thousand of them.
To describe the first round as a war is another understatement, Sekiraqi seemed intent to behead Moore with massive haymakers. Moore on the other hand did really well to avoid decapitation and put in some excellent, and far more controlled, attacks of his own between having to defend against the banshie attacks. Late in the round Moore rocked Sekiraqi with a peach of a right but was unable to capitalise before the bell rang
Even before round two started it was clear this fight wouldn’t go the distance and sure enough after about fourty seconds down goes Sekiraqi after Moore landed a simply divine right to the head of the attacking Kosovon.
Sekiraqi made the count, just, and was allowed to continue. Less than a minute later he was back down on the canvas for a second time, following yet another a cracking right from Moore.
Again Sekiraqi made the count but this time the referee had seen enough and waved the fight off after one minute and fourty nine seconds of the second round, much to the annoyance of the Kosovon fans.
All in all it was an excellent event with exciting well matched bouts, now the Goodwin Juggernaut moves on to Gorsebrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, Essex where part two of his anniversary celebration takes part on March 19th with the quadruple headlined ‘Essex Eruption’ event featuring Leon ‘Solid’ Williams, Yassine El Maachi, ‘Phat’ Pat McAleese, Tony Conquest, Ricky Boylan, ‘Saint’ George Jupp, Michael Grant, Michael Devine, Daniel Herdman, Michael Norgrove, Richard Hines, Kris Agyei-Dua and Danny Brown against quality opponents.(Photo Lloyd Honeyghan & SteveGoodwin)

Michael Grant Returns 5th March - Unleash The Fury @ York Hall
Tottenham’s Michael Grant is set to return to the ring, after a year long sabbatical from the sport, at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘UNLEASH THE FURY’ mega event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, on Saturday 5th March 2011.
Michael, who was one of the most exciting young Light Welterweight prospects to explode on the British Boxing scene in the middle of the naughties, dropped from the radar back in February last year, following his surprising loss to Steve Williams at their clash for the vacant English title.
As the New Year dawned Michael reappeared at long time manager-trainer Johnny Eames’ Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town and started training in earnest again.
With the news that TKO’s Nathan Weise had to drop out, of the 5th March show, MIchael instantly put himself forward as a replacement, and surprisingly deciding to enter the fray at Lightweight rather than his usual division.
Following sparring sessions, with TKO team mates ‘Pretty’ Ricky Boylan and Sam Standing, Michael explained why he took the break and also his switching to the Lightweight division, “There was a lot of things, outside boxing, that were happening in my life and I really needed to sort that out first. I can’t box if I’m not one hundred percent.
Everytime I get in the ring I want to be one hundred and ten percent but I couldn’t do that at the time. Yeah, now I’m back, and back in full effect.
I think I will be a lot stronger at Lightweight. At Light Welter I could handle the weight, I could compete against people at that weight even those that were a lot bigger than me, but I feel I’ll be even stronger at Lightweight.
They’re gonna be amazed, this time out is different. My attitude, my discipline to the sport, everything is different this time. It’s going to be amazing. everyone’s gonna be shocked when they see me back in.
This time as a Lightweight I’m gonna be stopping a lot more people and going all the way. Whether it’s 6, 10, 12 rounds it doesn’t matter, I feel a lot stronger in myself, mentally and physically. It’s gonna be mad, I can’t wait to get back in there.”
Michael Grant, against a yet to be named opponent, will be on the undercard of Toks Owoh versus Billy Boyle at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Unleash The Fury’ event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 5th March 2011.
Main support for the Owoh-Boyle headliner features Michael’s Ultrachem TKO team mate - the exciting London based Dutch Cruiserweight - Mitchell Balker versus Doncaster hard man John Anthony.
The Unleash The Fury undercard features some of London’s best upcoming talents and includes yet another of Michael’s Ultrachem TKO Gym mates ‘Dynamo’ Daryl Setterfield against Birmingham’s Andrew ‘Paddy’ Patterson.
Minster. Kent Light Heavyweight Dan ‘Woody’ Woodgate gets his third outing against Retford’s Lee Nicholson and Waltham Abbey Light Welterweight Phil Gill looks to take his unbeaten run to ten against Aysham’s Scott Moises.
Luton Lightweight Michael ‘Chunky’ Devine makes his welcome return to the ring, following his coveted ‘0’ to Mark ‘The Flash’ Alexander last year, and will be looking to get back to winning ways against the highly experienced Daniel Thorpe.
Biggleswade Light Middleweight Jamie Boness will be looking to extend his unbeaten record against Guildford’s Louis Byrne and Woolwich Super Middleweight Eder Kurti faces Welsh banger Jamie Ambler.
Unbeaten, in twelve, Hackney Middleweight Wayne Alwan-Arab is set to face Tooting based Bulgarian Danny Dontchev.
Another of Michael’s Ultrachem TKO gym mates, Caine Brodie, also features on the card against a yet to be named opponent.
Making their pro debuts at ‘Unleash The Fury’ are Harlesden Lightweight Met Sekiraqa, against Robin Deakin and former World Kick Boxing Champion, Llir Canolli, from Cosavo, against a yet to be named opponent.

Ojuederie Pulls Out Of Owoh Showdown - Boyle Steps Up to The Plate On March 5th
The highly anticipated Cruiserweight clash between Toks Owoh and JJ Ojuederie, at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Unleash The Fury’ super show at London’s York Hall on Saturday 5th March 2011, is off following Ojuederie pulling out, due to an injury sustained in training.
Stepping up to the plate, to replace the injured Ojuederie, is # 13 ranked Billy ‘The People’s Poet’ Boyle from Sheffield.
Former Paratrooper Boyle, who in 2009 unsuccessfully challenged Light Heavyweight supremo Nathan Cleverly for his Commonwealth crown, is likely to prove an even sterner test for the returning former World # 3 ranked and IBF Super Middleweight Inter-Continental title challenger from Chalk Farm.
On receiving the news that his replacement opponent for the 5th March is Billy Boyle a Toks said, “I don’t really know too much about Billy Boyle. I can say I have been around way before this guy.
I see his tape, I see the way he box and I’m just going to go in there and do what I know best, that’s boxing.
If it happens I take him out, I take him out, but the only thing I know to do best is to box. I’ve been doing that for twenty years now.
It’s gonna be a good fight.”

UK Boxing: Mitchell Balker “Unleash The Fury”
By Rio
London - Wednesday, 16th February 2011
Mitchell Balker Added To Unleash The Fury At York Hall 5th March
Exciting London based Dutch Cruiserweight prospect Mitchell Balker is to make his third UK outing, against Doncaster’s John Anthony, at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘UNLEASH THE FURY’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, on Saturday 5th March 2011.
Balker’s performance on his last outing, against Nick Okoth at the excellent Graham Earl promoted ‘Capital Punishment’ Event in January, was pure quality.
Balker’s savvy ring craft proved to be too much for ‘The Ox’. Right from the start Balker controlled the fight utilising crisp jabs to keep Okoth on the defensive before moving in to land solid jabs and right hands before stepping aside to thwart any return salvos from the heavy handed Okoth.
Round two see Okoth charge from his corner before swinging wildly in a effort to gain a semblance of control. Balker kept calm and stayed out of trouble by moving out of range and occasionally letting rip with clinical lefts and rights that slowed the advancing Okoth considerably.
Round three see Balker step things up a notch and just plain out box Okoth with crisp jabs and wicked combinations. Each time Okoth advanced Balker would let him back him onto the ropes before spinning Okoth and launching a controlled attack of his own. Often to the head but sometimes with a peach of a three punch combination that ended with a solid left to the body.
Round four was more of the same and it was no surprise that come the final bell the referee declared Balker the winner by a clear 40-36 points margin.
Following a training session at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London, Balker spoke of the bout with Nick Okoth as well as the upcoming fight with John Anthony, “As always I am in good shape, I’m always in the gym . I’m ready for it, I’m ready to go.
I enjoyed my last fight against Nick Okoth. I had good training, I did what I was supposed to do. Good Boxing, crisp good jab and yeah I did a good job.
On the 5th what you are going to see is Mitchell Balker in top condition and I’m ready to go. If it goes longer rounds, then I’m ready to go longer rounds. If it’s an early stoppage, then it’s an early stoppage. I’m just happy to fight again.
I’ve been sparring with good guys. I’ve been sparring with Manny (Emmanuel Oshunrinde), our very own Manny Pacquiao, I’ve sparred with Leon (Southern Area Cruiserweight Champ Leon ‘Solid’ Williams), I sparred today with a Heavyweight, I sparred with Caine (Caine Brodie). Caine will be on the same show.
TKO is a very good gym, very good gym for sparring. I spar three or four times in a week. You’ve got terrific sparring here. TKO gym is a good gym for sparring.
Let’s just make a good show of it. Lets have Caine win and me win. It’s a good thing, a good thing.”
Johnny Eames, Balker’s manager and co-trainer, then added, “Mitchell is in action again on the 5th March against John Anthony.
We’re really pleased for Mitchell, our TKO Box Office site has enabled us to give Mitchell a couple of fights as the house fighter which I think all prospects, which I consider Mitchell a prospect, deserve to be the house fighters.
I’m pretty certain from his attitude and his application and his training that he’ll put in another good performance. You know and then if myself and Rio can keep him in the house corner, through our TKO Box Office site, then so be it and I’m sure he’ll prosper from it.
Yeah, I’m pretty certain it’ll be another good win for Mitchell.”
Mitchell Balker versus John Anthony will be main support to Toks Owoh versus Billy Boyle at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Unleash The Fury’ event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 5th March 2011.
The Unleash The Fury undercard features some of London’s best upcoming talents and including Balker’s Ultrachem TKO Gym mate ‘Dynamo’ Daryl Setterfield against Birmingham’s Andrew ‘Paddy’ Patterson.

‘Unleash The Fury’ York Hall, March 5th
By Rio
London - Thursday, 27th January 2011
Toks Owoh Vs. JJ Ojuederie Headline ‘Unleash The Fury’ At York Hall, March 5th.
Steve Goodwin celebrates his first year as a boxing promoter with two huge shows in March, the first, at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 5th March 2011, is headlined by Toks Owoh versus JJ Ojuderie and is supported by no less than fourteen bouts featuring the cream of the Capital’s upcoming young fighters.
On announcing the ‘Unleash The Fury’ event Steve Goodwin said, “The York Hall show, ‘Unleash The Fury’, on March 5th is a showcase for our boxers that are on the way up.
Our main show is at Dagenham on March 19th but we’ve got a lot of people that want to fight on our shows. Basically we’ve created a second show where we’re going to see a lot of upcoming talent, as well as a couple of boxers that have the potential to go to British and European championship level.
Toks Owoh will be headlining the show, he’s desperate to box Southern Area champion Leon Williams. He’s so desperate to fight Leon he says he’d do it for free because he wants to hurt him badly. He says he doesn’t want money for that. He’ll enjoy it. Unfortunately Leon’s got other arrangements, he’s on a Frank Maloney show in February.
Toks is hoping to put on a real good show on March 5th against JJ Ojuederie because he wants to show he can do a better job on JJ than Leon did. But he desperately wants to get Leon in the ring. Toks is after the British title, just the same as Leon is. That could be an interesting match up for later in 2011.
Also on the show we have the World Kick Boxing Champion, Llir Canolli from Cosavo. He’s very, very exciting to see. He is very well regarded and has been tipped to become a Boxing World Champion. So we’re very privileged for him to be coming over to fight on the show. He’s a true Cruiserweight prospect so we’re very excited to be seeing him.
I’m personally excited to see the come back of Michael Devine. He’s a very, very exciting come forward fighter. He lost in his last fight, on his 21st birthday, against Mark Alexander last year.
He took some time out and got himself back together. He’s working like a demon in the gym and I think this is the year we see Michael Devine progress through the ranks. Hopefully by December we’ll have Mark Alexander back in the ring with him so he can set the record straight.
It’s a big card, there will be fifteen bouts on the night. It’s going to be a big card, anything I am associated with I want to be known as giving value for money by the public and make sure that there is always a fantastic atmosphere and packed arenas.
It’s going to be a lot of four round fights with up and coming prospects. It’s going to be an exciting night of boxing. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Steve Goodwin’s ‘Unleash The Fury’ event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London is headlined by a six round Cruiserweight contest between Toks Owoh versus JJ Ojuederie.
The huge fourteen bout undercard features some of London’s best upcoming talents and includes Ultrachem TKO’s ‘Dynamo’ Daryl Setterfield against Birmingham’s Andrew ‘Paddy’ Patterson.
Three Ultrachem TKO gym mates of Daryl Setterfield are also on the show, Light Heavyweight Joel ‘El Toro’ McIntyre, Light Middleweights Nathan Weise and Brett O’Callaghan, all against yet to be named opponents.
Also appearing on the show are Rainham Super Featherweight Richard Hines, Luton Lightweight Michael ‘Chunky’ Devine, unbeaten Biggleswade Light Middleweight Jamie Boness, Minster. Kent Light Heavyweight Dan ‘Woody’ Woodgate, Woolwich Super Middleweight Eder Kurti, Waltham Abbey Light Welterweight Phil Gill and unbeaten in twelve Hackney Middleweight Wayne Alwan-Arab.
Making his first outing as a professional is Highbury Super Featherweight Charlie Kelly who is set to face the highly experienced Birmingham battler Anthony ‘Spanner’ Hanna.
Also making their pro debuts at ‘Unleash The Fury’ are Harlesden Lightweight Met Sekiraqa and former World Kick Boxing Champion, Llir Canolli from Cosavo.
Tickets for Unleash The Fury at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 5th March 2011 are on sale now - priced £35 (Unreserved) or £60 (Ringside).
