Ireland’s Mitchell & Fleming, Going Places
By Irish Boxing Fan
Ireland’s Willie “Sandman Mitchell” and Conor Fleming are now setting their targets further afield, in their quest to reach the top of their ranks
A sell out crowd was treated to an entertaining and exciting five-fight bill, on Saturday 18 February, in Omagh, Northern Ireland, as they cheered on two local pros appearing on the card; Willie Sandman Mitchell and Conor Fleming did not disappoint the fans as both registered memorable victories.
The show’s promoter said “Given the sell out crowd, it just shows how Sandman and Fleming have captured the public’s imagination.”
In a Bantamweight contest marking his pro debut Fleming made short work of his Belfast opponent Chris Kelly, stopping the game but outclassed visitor inside two rounds after a series of crunching body shots to the ribcage. The former all Ireland champion showed true class in executing and landing near perfect punches.
Willie “Sandman” Mitchell making his third apperance in the paid ranks had to go the distance for the first time since turning pro, in his Light-Middleweigh bout against McGuigan. Winning every round on the scorecard, with the final round being a 10-8. Mitchell said afterwards that he was glad to get a few extra rounds under his belt. Sandman showed ring-craft and discipline, as he set about dismantling a dangerous opponent.
Sandman and Fleming both boxing out of the G-Force stable in Omagh under their trainer Joe Gallagher, are really starting to cause quite a few ripples of excitement in Irish boxing circles and are now setting their targets further afield, in their quest to reach the top of their rank.

Towers To Topple Britain’s Best
UNBEATEN heavyweight Richard Towers will be targeting Britain’s top heavyweights by the end of this year.
That is the expectation of Hatton Promotions head man Ricky Hatton, who is tipping the 6ft 9in Sheffield man to crush his giant rivals in the heavyweight division.
Towers, 32, bids for his 13th successive professional win at Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield on Saturday March 24 when he boxes an eight rounder against a selected opponent.
Before long ‘The Hitman’ expects the Sheffield man to be facing Tyson Fury and David Price who are storming up the world rankings.
Hatton said: “The British heavyweight scene is as exciting today as it’s been for years, due to the success of several fighters.
“Recently Tyson and David Price have been getting attention, but I want to have Richard hot on their heels over the forthcoming months.
“I feel ready to let Richard off the leash now and he certainly won’t disappoint, and he I am sure he will back up my belief in him to go a long way on our bumper Sheffield show.”
In the main event local hero Ryan Rhodes and will face Belarussian sensation Sergey Rabchenko for the vacant European light-middleweight crown. The Sky Sports televised show will also feature Gary Buckland’s British super-featherweight title defence against Middlesbrough’s Paul Truscott.
Local unbeaten local ticket sellers Adam Etches and Scott Jenkins will be among the prospects in action, along with Jack Perry and Maxi Hughes.

Brooklyn Stars On NBC Sports Network
Brooklyn Stars On
NBC Sports Network Fight Night Show
March 24th - Aviator Sports and Event Center
Brooklyn, New York has a firm place in the history of boxing. Over the years, famous fight clubs like the Eastern Parkway Arena and legendary gyms like Gleason’s have contributed chapter after chapter to the fight game history book. The borough has also spawned ring greats like Mike Tyson, Joey Giardello, Mark Breland and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, not to mention other notables like Jackie Gleason, Spike Lee, Al Capone and most of the Three Stooges. To be sure, Brooklyn is a historic locale.
Main Events and the NBC Sports Network look to add to that storied history on March 24th when they bring a big, nationally televised fight card to Brooklyn’s Aviator Sports Complex. The main event features an important 12-round IBF Title Elimination Bout between junior welterweights Zab Judah, 41-7, 28 KOs, and Detroit’s Vernon Paris, 26-0, 15 KOs. The non-televised undercard fights will begin at 7:30 p.m., the NBC Sports Network Fight Night broadcast will begin at 10 p.m. ET.
Judah is one of those proud Brooklyn fighters that have struck it big in boxing. The former five-time world champion is part of a fighting family of Brooklynites that include his brothers Daniel, Joe and father Yoel. The fight in March has been called Judah’s “Homecoming” but it will be the very first time that he steps into the ring in his hometown. It should be quite an event.
Earlier this year, the NBC Sports Network set out to create a new boxing series that would not only bring back to TV the important match-ups and competitive contests that fight fans were longing for, they also pledged to make their shows relevant to each hosting site. Just like it was done in the good old days of the sport.
So on March 24th, Zab Judah will not be the only fighter the local fans come out to see. The remainder of the show is loaded with other Brooklyn fighters anxious to do battle before their hometown crowd. But in an interesting note, it will be the very first Brooklyn fight for every one of them.
Brooklyn-born middleweight Curtis “Showtime” Stevens, 21-3, 15 KOs, will make his hometown debut against Cleveland’s Romaro Johnson, 11-5-1, 6 KOs, in a six-rounder. Stevens is coming off a close decision loss in his own IBF Eliminator and will be looking to get back on track.
Undefeated bantamweight Juan Domingez, 8-0, 5 KOs, won the Vacant USA New York State Bantamweight Title in his last outing, a unanimous decision over Arturo Santiago. The 26 year old was born in the Dominican Republic, but now calls Brooklyn home. He’ll fight a six-rounder in his first hometown bout.
Puerto Rico-born, Brooklyn resident Angel Garcia, 1-0, 1 KO, makes just his second career start on the card, but like the others, it will be the first time he does it in Brooklyn.
Zab’s brother Joe Judah, 10-1-1, 2 KOs, will compete in a 6-round super middleweight bout that marks his first fight in eight months. Joe beat Rafael Jastrzebski by decision in Las Vegas his last time out, but like his big brother, Joe has not yet fought in Brooklyn.
The ten-bout card promoted by Main Events will not only be a homecoming for Zab Judah and the other four Brooklyn boxers scheduled to appear, it will be the latest not-to-be-missed offering in Brooklyn’s very own piece of boxing history.

Farrell: Jennings Looking For Excuses
KIERAN FARRELL believes rival Stephen Jennings is already looking for excuses ahead of their Central Area light-welterweight title fight.
Scouser Jennings (5-1-1) has stepped in at one week’s notice to challenge Farrell for the vacant title over ten rounds at Bury’s Castle Leisure Centre on Friday (March 2).
Jennings’ camp reckons it would be an easy night for their man, but now rate it a “50-50” fight much to the anger of Farrell.
The Heywood battler (11-0) said: “Kieran’s manager made some comments about it being an even fight because of the short notice, but that is nonsense.
“Jennings had already been in training for a contest a week later. To me they are already wheeling out the excuses.
“We were both told about this fight on Friday and I had been preparing for a switch hitter when Jon Baguley was the opponent so it has meant a change for me, also.”
The card is the latest in Hatton TV’s Friday fight night series that is broadcast live on You Tube and draws tens of thousands of fans from around the globe.
Other fights: Adam Little v Martin Shaw, Dean Halsall v Bobby Wood, Wayne Adaniyi v Tommy Shields, Jimmy Kelly v Moss Hamed, Ryan Doyle v Michael Stupart, Austin Hornsby v Lee Quinn, Tom Shaw v Danny Connor. Craig Bunn and Callum De’ath box selected opponents.
