Title Shot For Nathan Weise, Faces Steve O’Meara On 14th December

One of the most exciting young prospects from Johnny Eames’ always excellent TRAD TKO stable, ‘Sugar’ Nathan Weise, gets his first taste of Championship action - when he challenges West Drayton’s Steve O’Meara for the Southern Area Light Middleweight title on December 14th.

Weise-O’Meara will be chief support to the Lee Selby versus John Simpson British Featherweight title clash at Francis and George Warren’s Queensberry Promotions event at York Hall in Bethnal Green on Wednesday, 14th December and broadcast live on BoxNation (Sky platform Channel 456 & Virgin 546).

Speaking earlier Weise made it clear that he intends to emulate TRAD TKO gym mates; Southern Area Lightweight Champion Ben Murphy, Southern Area Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders, British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams, British Welterweight Champion Colin Lynes and WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight Champion Kevin Mitchell, who all bought back titles to the famous Canning Town gym this year.

“First of all I want to thank my manager, Johnny Eames, for getting me the opportunity to fight for the Southern Area title.

My last fight I drew against former Champ Ryan Toms, who Steve O’Meara beat to get the title.

If it wasn’t for the knockdown I would have won the fight, but that’s boxing for you. It only takes one punch.

I showed heart and got up and got myself back in the fight. As I said if it wasn’t for the knockdown I would have won.

I can see this fight being a whole different type of fight, as I don’t think O’Meara’s as big a puncher as Ryan Toms, even though he stopped him in the first round his record doesn’t say he’s a big puncher, he’s more of a stylist boxer.

I see this fight being more of a chess match, but he’s a champion so I’m going to have to put it on him, take it to him and take the fight from him.

My trainer, Mark Tibbs, has had me training so hard in the gym in preparation for this fight, training’s spot on.

I only boxed just over three weeks ago so really I’ve been training for this fight for seven or eight weeks already. I’m going to be in tip top shape, I’m ready to go

You know what they say ‘styles makes fights’ and I just can’t wait to get in there and win the Southern Area title.

I’m not going to say I am going to stop him but I’m going to outwork him out hustle him and bring the title back to the TRAD TKO gym, where it belongs, and have a good Christmas.”

Nathan Weise versus Steve O’Meara for the Southern Area Light Middleweight Championship takes place on the Francis and George Warren’s Queensberry Promotions event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, on Wednesday 14th December 2011 and broadcast live on BoxNation (Sky platform Channel 456 & Virgin 546)

Tickets, priced £40 (Standard Seated) and £60 (Ringside) are available on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com. Tickets are also available in person from Nathan at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA.

Mansour vs. Mendoza: Don’t Blink!

When Amir Mansour and Epifanio Mendoza square off for the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental Heavyweight title on Saturday December 2 at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Dover, Delaware, it is one of those fights where the spectators better keep their eyes open at all times.
It is almost a certainty that somebody is going to get knocked out!
Southpaw-banger Mansour, 15-0 (11), has created quite a buzz recently and is widely considered one of the most exiting heavyweights around, but at age 39 time is not on his side. Nicknamed “Hardcore”, he turned professional in 1997 and compiled nine straight victories before being incarcerated for eight-and-a-half years between 2001 and 2010.
But while he spend all those years in prison, Mansour never stopped training, and eventually he walked out the prison gates in the same excellent shape as when he walked in. One of the first things he did as a free man was return to a real boxing gym.
In August 2010 he began his amazing comeback, and has since delivered one highlight-reel knockout after another. This past August he was taken the distance for the first time since he returned, when perennial contender Dominick Guinn managed to go ten rounds. Before that Mansour had destroyed five opponents in a row.
Columbia’s former Light Heavyweight World Title-Challenger Epifanio “Diamante” Mendoza, 32-12-1 (28), let his presence in the heavyweight division be known a few months ago when he knocked out undefeated (13-0) Puerto Rican prospect Carlos Negron in three rounds.
Like Mansour, Mendoza has travelled a very unusual road towards their WBF Heavyweight title showdown. He made his professional debut as a Light Middleweight in 1999, and knocked out his first sixteen opponents, including the highly touted and undefeated (17-0) Tokunbo Olajide. As he moved up the divisions he captured titles at Middleweight and Super Middleweight, before losing a bid for the WBC World Light Heavyweight championship against Chad Dawson.
Since the Dawson bout, Mendoza has come second in Cruiserweight title fights against undefeated opponents BJ Flores and Lateef Kayode, before making his way to boxing’s most prominent weight class, Heavyweight, where he is 2-0 with two knockouts against undefeated opposition. Now the question remains, will he be able to make it 3-0 against Mansour?
No matter who emerges victorious in Dover on December 2, the fans are sure to be in for a treat. Mansour vs. Mendoza, DON’T BLINK!

Quigg Preparing For First Defence

SCOTT QUIGG will make the first defence of his British super-bantamweight title early next year on Saturday February 4

The contest will take place in the Premier Suite at Bolton’s Reebok Arena and is being televised live on Sky Sports.

Hatton Promotions hope to announce the challenger in the next ten days for the clash that looks sure to be sell-out – just 12 miles from Quigg’s Bury home.

Quigg, 23, became domestic champion in October, forcing Jason Booth to quit on his stool after seven rounds.

Ricky Hatton believes unbeaten Quigg (23-0) is well on the way to becoming a world champion, and is eyeing an eventual fight with Barry McGuigan protégé Carl Frampton.

‘The Hitman’ said: “I have always spoken highly of Scott and now people will start to take more notice after the Booth win.

“I look forward in the near future to seeing Scott taking on Carl Frampton who Barry McGuigan believes will take the world by storm, but I disagree massively.

“Although I’m a Frampton fan, Scott is an all-rounder, solid in every department and tip Scott to beat him when they meet down the line.
“The last time me and Barry disagreed on match was when Michael Gomez beat Alex Arthur. Barry picked Arthur and I picked Gomez. Gomez won a classic, and Quigg will also win a classic against Frampton when they meet.”

On the undercard Manchester’s Beijing Olympian meets fellow unbeaten hopeful Chris Male for the vacant English featherweight title.

Hatton Promotions prospects Jez Wilson and Tom Doran clash in a battle of light-middleweight hopefuls. The card will also include Craig Lyon.

Boxing starts at 6.15pm and tickets priced at £35, £55 and £75 VIP ringside. You can buy by calling 01925 755 222, Ticketmaster 0844 847 2500, Ticketline 0844 888 9991 or online www.hattonboxing.com

15th Anniversary Year For Ying Yang Kickboxing Club

15 years Kickboxing in Malta

By Reuben Azzopardi

This November it will mark the 15th year anniversary since Ying Yang Kickboxing club opened its doors to become the most dynamic Maltese club in this sport discipline.

In 1996 Master Noel Mercieca, the founder of the club, started to teach this Martial Art to just two students in a school hall in Fgura. Now 15 years, 4 sports halls and numerous victories later he is the proud instructor of 150 students that train Kickboxing as a way of life, as a sport, and as a hobby.

As a Black Belt 5th Dan in Kickboxing and Black Belt in Tang So Do he has the knowledge to teach and train his students. Some of them also ended up in achieving numerous National, European and World Titles in Kickboxing, Boxing and K1.

The first great achievement was in 1999 when the then 11 year old Ruth Tanti won the Gold Medal in the WKA World Championships held here in Malta. In 2004 the club became part of the Malta Kickboxing Association (MKBA) that was founded by Kancho Adrian Axisa. It was here that Mercieca and Axisa started organizing the National Championships and in the same year Ying Yang won 8 Title Belts out of 11.

From then on the club’s members won the lion’s part of every National Championship and from there went for their next step, that of competing abroad. In 2006 the Ying Yang tenaciously represented Malta by winning 7 matches out of 10 in an International competition against British Kickboxers.

In 2007 the club became part of the World Kickboxing Network (WKN) and started competing with K1 rules, where knee strikes are allowed. Reuben “the Wolf” Azzopardi was the first to compete in K1 but Daniel “the Jet” Zarha brought home the first WKN Belt. In 2009 the MKBA organized the first WKN World Cup in which Ruth Tanti was the first female athlete that won a World Title together with 3 other Ying Yang members. In 2010 Terence Cilia won the WKN European Cup against a Kickboxer from Ireland.

Currently Master Mercieca has a total of 15 students that have the Black Belt level and are all capable of giving instruct during training. Due to the new fully equipped training facility in Fgura Master Mercieca is capable of giving lessons everyday of the week. All the club’s members vary in age from the youngest of 6 years to the oldest of 50 years and the lessons are catered for both beginners and advanced. It was just last August that Ying Yang became the first Kickboxing Club to be part of the Kunsill Malti għall-isport.

The climax for this year it will be on the 7th of December where “the Jet” will be the first ever Maltese Kickboxer that will compete on a Professional Level as a Kickboxer. This will be 5 rounds match of 3 minutes where both contenders will compete for the WKN European Title in Kickboxing.
