Nicolai Valuev - Predicts Briggs Defeat

.

Russian heavyweight boxer Nicolai Valuev is in Germany for treatment and an operation on his injured right hand, in an interview published on Ukrainian news site blik.ua – Valuev told blik that he would only be staying in Germany for a few days at most and then returning home.

When asked about his expected recovery time Valuev said that guessing is like trying to see the future in a coffee cup.

Asked if he will watch Ukrainian, Vitali Klitschko defend his WBC world title against American, Shannon Briggs. – Valuev replied; “certainly I just do not know where I’ll be at this point, probably either Moscow or Tver, where I am going to open another boxing school.” – “This is my fourth school and another two are in the pipeline”.

Valuev asked about predictions for the Klitschko – Briggs fight on the 16th of October, the Russian heavyweight had no doubts about who would win. “Klitschko of course” – “Briggs, is a good boxer who was world champion, but Shannon is already weakened with age, the peak of his career behind him.”

Valuev made it clear during his interview that he does not agree that boxers are afraid to entre the ring with the Klitschko’s – he explained, when you are the champion it is very easy to do a bad financial offer which a good fighter will refuse and then say that the opponent is afraid to go into the ring.

About rumors of a spring clash with Klitschko – Valuev told Blik that they would have to consult fortune tellers on this.

About the verbal abuse from Klitschko the Russian giant said that he was not a girl and insults do not rule his life.

Talking about his film career and rumors about a major part in the film “bigfoot” – Valuev replied that there are no set proposals and this was a case of the media making mountains out of molehills.

Jeff Fenech

Former world champion of Maltese decent Jeff Fenech is back in the news – alleging betrayal by his former trainer Johnny Lewis.

By Ray Wheatley

Australian ring legend Jeff Fenech has lashed out at his former trainer Johnny Lewis over what he calls a betrayal by Lewis in his authorized biography released last month. “It’s time I told the real story because some of the things he’s said about me in the book are hurtful,” Fenech told the Sunday Telegraph. “It’s made out as if Johnny’s some great guy and I’m an arsehole.”

The Hall of Famer is particularly upset about Lewis’ account of his 1992 loss to Azumah Nelson in front of 44,000 fans in Melbourne, for which he blames Lewis and his doctor for administering an incorrect dose of pain killer for a hand injury. “I’m not making excuses but there were a few reasons why I lost and Johnny knows them. I could hardly walk when I left the dressing room for the fight,” Fenech told the paper. “When I went through the book it really hurt me. I can’t just sit back and let him say stuff about me that’s totally untrue.” Source: World of Boxing

WSB - A Boxing Revolution

Officials of the new “World Series of Boxing” (WSB) which will be launched in November have just finished another weeks training and preparation for the new boxing league which according to the International Boxing Association (AIBA) will revolutionize boxing.

The World Series of Boxing is a professional boxing league in which boxers who are members of the AIBA may participate get paid and yet will retain their Olympic eligibility. This super boxing league will not be using head guard or vests and bout scoring will be based on the 10 point system.

Meeting some resistance at first the idea eventually caught on and the new league will have no less than 12 franchises from the five continents taking part - according to the WSB - The regular season starts on the weekend of November 19, 2023 and continues until the weekend of March 18, 2011. During the regular season, each team will play each of the other teams twice (once home and once away). The top team from each conference, plus the best second-placed team, will then enter the play-offs during April 2011. - The team and individual championships will then take place during May 2011.

WSB R&J Workshop, Istanbul September 2010 (Photo: WSB)

It was a busy week for the World Series of Boxing’s Sports department last week as the prospective Referees and Judges (R&Js) for the first two regular seasons converged on the city of Istanbul, home to one of the 12 franchise teams, for a comprehensive preparatory workshop.

Led by the experienced AIBA instructors Dr. Humbert Furgoni, President of the European Boxing Confederation and Member of the WSB Board of Directors, Osvaldo Bisbal and Luiz Boselli, both members of the AIBA R&J Commission, a total of 39 future officials were instructed and evaluated on refereeing WSB bouts.

As part of the workshop, judges also received instruction on the electronic scoring system that the WSB will use to indicate the score at the end of each round using the 10-point “must” system.

The scoring system is, however, just one element in a new competition format that is set to revolutionize boxing. More importantly for the referees is the adjustment to a new style of refereeing that aims to improve the flow of the bouts and minimize interruptions. This includes allowing referees more power to intervene in the bout and communicate more with the boxers during the bout, either by making signs to the boxers to indicate infringements of the rules or talking to them directly, without actually stopping the bout. For English referee Mik Basi, this was crucial: “[The] Biggest difference for us as referees is to be able to touch and speak to the boxers during the bout,” he said.

All R&Js attending the workshop were evaluated based on theoretical and practical tests to assess their ability to adapt to the new competition style. Commenting on the workshop, Tony Germain, an R&J from Canada said he believed that “WSB as whole and the scoring system in particular will save the image of boxing”. His comments were among many by the participants stressing the importance of WSB in the future development of boxing, as echoed by Ireland’s R&J Seamus Kelly, Ireland R&J, “WSB is the future of our sport and boxing needs this project in order to revive the sport of boxing.”

The top 30 WSB R&Js will be selected based on their performance during the practical examinations, the written examination as well as the continuous evaluation during the workshop held in Istanbul. The future WSB R&Js will be informed about their selection within the next two weeks and will sign a service agreement with WSB.

In Istanbul WSB organised the first part of the WSB Supervisors workshop from 31st August to 1st September with 6 participants and will now have a further WSB Supervisors workshop in Barbados on 16th September with 9 other participants. After both workshops the WSB Supervisors will be selected according to their performance during the workshop.
