Marston & McKenzie ‘Tear Up’ In Carnaby Street - To Promote Women’s Boxing at 2012 Olympics
Women fighting in the heart of London would normally be cause for concern but today (thurs) two professional women boxers battled it out on Carnaby Street, Soho, to raise awareness of the new Olympic sport.
Women’s boxing will have a place in the Olympics for the first time when London hosts the games in 2012. Both Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston and sparring partner Angel McKenzie believe it’s an exciting time for women’s boxing.
The two boxers were joined by dozens of citizen reporters from Winkball.com, there to video people’s opinions about a sport which still holds a certain taboo with the British Public.
As well as taking its place in the Olympics, woman’s amateur boxing will be aired for the first time in the UK next weekend live from the GB Amateur Championships in Liverpool.
Speaking to reporters from Winkball.com, the UK’s number one video messaging website, Marianne said: ‘It’s a great time for women’s boxing and about time women boxers got the recognition they deserve.
“For the whole of human evolution people have been saying that women shouldn’t fight or shouldn’t box. But we’re athletes and entertainers, and a lot of women have worked hard for this recognition.”
Marianne, 36, from Bermondsey, is one of the UK’s few female professional boxers. Her next bout is against Lana Cooper on Saturday December 4th at York Hall in Bethnal Green.
Asked if she worries about being hurt in the ring, she said, “In the ring I don’t really feel any pain. The pain comes in the training sessions. But maybe you should ask my sparring partner.”
Marianne’s sparring partner is Angel McKenzie, 31, from Herne Hill. Angel is perhaps best known as a former 2009 Big Brother contestant.
Speaking to WinkBall.com she echoed Marianne’s comments.
“I started to box for fun about 10 years ago and it helped me give up drugs. Women’s boxing is different from men’s. We can’t hit as hard and there are less knockouts. We box more like cats – we’re more graceful.”
Asked if she thought it was time for women’s boxing to take its place in the Olympics, she said: “Come on, it’s the 21st century. Women should be able to show what they can do because boxing is an art. We entertain.
Sure it can be scary getting in the ring. You feel it in your guts, but we’re there to entertain and the Olympics will greatly help the sport. People like something new.”
But Marianne also worries about her teeth. “Luckily my dentist is my best friend”, she said.

Maidana & Khan - Trash Talking
On Saturday night at Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires, in his native Argentina, WBA interim junior welterweight (140 pounds) champion Marcos Rene Maidana will meet former world titlist DeMarcus Corley for a match that would set him up for a Dec. 11 clash with England’s WBA king Amir Khan, should Maidana be victorious.
Maidana in a interview by FanHouse, had quite a lot to say about Khan, namely that he thinks the British star is afraid of him.
“Amir Khan is a hypocrite. Because he says one thing in front of the camera. Like, that’s when he’ll say that he badly wants to face Marcos Rene Maidana. But then when it comes to being behind closed doors and when he’s talking to our promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, he says that he wants to stay away from Marcos Rene Maidana.”
“I want to knock Amir Khan out, but not simply because we would be fighting in England, because I have nothing against the English. But I want to knock him out because I want to knock him out.”
Asked about statements by Khan that he was out – pricing himself out of a fight, Maidana answer was quite emphatic – “It’s just another lie from the Amir Khan team and his camp.” – Khan is afraid of me “Amir Khan is a liar. It’s another example of him not saying it to my face. It’s another excuse not to face me,” said Maidana according to Fanhouse.
Hopefully when these two have finished trash talking boxing we will have a fight boxing fans can look forward to. On the one side Khan who has the ability. On the other side Maidana who has the raw power and the big punch.
(If Maidana is victorious on Saturday of course)

Froch Would Like Rematch Against Kessler
Former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) still would like to fight a rematch with WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (43-2, 32 KO’s) in the future once Kessler’s eye injury heals – if it ever does. In an interview atLivefight.com, Froch says “I was hoping to have gotten a rematch with Kessler through the format of the Super Six. But health must come first and having eye problems in the past, I can only sympathize with Kessler’s current situation and wish him well.” Kessler suffered a bad eye injury in his fight against American Andre Ward last year in his first fight in the Super Six tournament. Kessler fought with the injury against Froch, but was still able to beat him without showing any signs of having problems.
Margarito Gets Boxing License
25th August - Two time welterweight champion Antonio Margarito got his dream come true today when the Texas Athletic Commission granted him his boxing license. Margarito didn’t even have to attend a hearing. All Margarito had to do in Texas was pay the $20 application fee and send in his application and that was it. Margarito had twice been denied a boxing license by California and the Nevada Athletic Commissions. With the approval by Texas, Margarito will now be fighting Manny Pacquiao on November 13th for the vacant World Boxing Council junior middleweight title at the Cowboy Stadium, in Arlington, Texas.
