Joseph Ward Magnificent in Baku

By AIBA

Ireland’s AIBA Youth World Champion 17-year-old Joseph Ward secured the gold medal and defended his title at the annual Abbas Agalarov Youth Memorial Tournament which was held at the capital city of Azerbaijan, Baku in December.

The young Irish boxer from Moate became AIBA Junior World Champion in 2009 and AIBA Youth World Champion last year. Following his great victories Ward moved up into the light heavyweight division where he will be aiming for a gold medal at the 2011 European Youth Championships in August.

Ward eliminated reigning European Junior Champion Aleksandr Dokvadze of Georgia in the quarter-final, Russia’s Vladimir Korsunov in the semi-final and in the final defeated Kazakhstan’s 16-year-old Dinislam Abdesov, who was silver medalist at the Ahmet Comert Junior Tournament in July. Joseph Ward claimed not only the gold medal but also picked up the best boxer trophy in Baku.

This was the host city’s fourth major boxing event following the 2009 AIBA President’s Cup, the 2010 AIBA Youth World Championships and the Heydar Aliyev Junior Cup in 2010. Baku will also host the 2011 AIBA Men’s World Championships, which will be the first Olympic qualifying event for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Uzbek Youth National Champion and Berdichev Youth Tournament silver medalist Shakhobiddin Zoirov from Bukhara claimed his first international victory in Baku after beating Evan Metcalfe of Ireland and Kazakhstan’s Erzhan Zhomart by accepted points in the light flyweight class.

President Heydar Aliyev Junior Cup winner Ramal Yusifzade of Azerbaijan caused a surprise at the event when he eliminated AIBA Youth World Championships bronze medalist Vasiliy Vetkin of Russia in the semi-final. For the gold medal contest he had to beat another Russian fighter, Sabukhi Kafarov, which the Azeri athlete did successfully.

Azerbaijan’s newcomer Ilkin Guliyev claimed the second gold medal for the host nation after beating Russian Youth National Championships silver medalist Radzhab Butayev at bantamweight, while his compatriot and Aliyev Junior Cup bronze medalist Parviz Bagirov defeated Kazakhstan’s powerful Dzhakibek Adzhibayev in the lightweight division.

Uzbekistan’s biggest hope, Ahmet Comert Junior Tournament winner 16-year-old Akmalbek Kosimov, claimed his second gold medal of 2010. At the light welterweight semi-final he had to beat Azerbaijan’s Joshgun Aliyev and proved too strong for Russia’s Zalibek Dzhmailov in the final.

Russian Youth National Championships quarter-finalist 17-year-old Abulzhabar Gasanov competed in his first major international tournament in Baku and won the welterweight class after defeating local Sagi Sadigli.

Georgia’s Aliyev Junior Cup silver medalist Nikoloz Sekhniashvili defeated his top rivals in Baku, firstly European Junior Championships silver medalist and Aliyev Junior Cup winner Rauf Rahimov after AIBA Youth World Championships quarter-finalist Kazim Eneyev of Russia in the middleweight final.

Russia’s 17-year-old Ivan Veryasov won the Amber Gloves Tournament among elite boxers in Kaliningrad where he defeated two veteran fighters, Germany’s Stefan Koeber and Lithuania’s Vitalijus Subacius. Veryasov’s experience was enough to beat his youth rivals in the heavyweight class in Baku, where he had a hectic final against Kazakhstan’s Artem Vasilyonok.

Super heavyweight’s reigning AIBA Junior World Champion 17-year-old Gasan Gimbatov of Russia did not qualify for the 1st Youth Olympic Games but claimed the gold medal at the Agalarov Youth Memorial Tournament, where 89 boxers from seven nations competed to bolster their international experiences.

BY BERNARD O’NEILL

Katie Taylor has admitted that she was KO’d by the reception she received at Dublin airport today. The Bray woman claimed the second of two hat-ricks in the space of a month in Barbados last weekend.

The Irish squad of Taylor, Ceire Smith, Allana Murphy and Sinead Kavanagh, Team manager Stephen Connolly, Director of Boxing Dominic O’Rourke, coaches Peter Taylor and Zuar Antia and referee and judge Fionna Hennigan arrived home to a rapturous reception via Dublin Airport today.

Family and friends and hundreds of fans were at the airport to greet Team Ireland home.

TAYLOR WINS BEST BOXER AWARD

BY BERNARD O’NEILL

Katie Taylor was celebrating on the double last night after claiming her third AIBA World title in a row at the 6th AIBA Women’s World Championships and scooping the boxer of the tournament award in Barbados.

The Bray woman, who also claimed the best boxer award at the 2008 AIBA World Championships in China, beat China’s Cheng Dong, who she beat in the 2008 final, 18-5 in Saturday’s 60kg final in Bridgetown.

Speaking after her 100th victory from 106 starts since 2001, Taylor, the current European and European Union champion, who had a sizable, and very vociferous, band of supporters cheering her all the way down to the the final bell in her lightweight duel with Dong, said her focus is now on the 30th Olympiad in London.

She also very sportingly praised her semi-final opponent Queen Underwood of the USA. Both women were involved in the bout of the tournament on Saturday night, Taylor emerging victorious from an absolute thriller.

“Yesterday I had to give credit to Queen Underwood. She boxed really well. She made it very hard for me and I felt very tired in the ring, said Taylor.

“Today I felt a lot better and I just kept her arm on the jab. I’ve had a lot of tough fights before but in a major championship I’ve never felt that way before. My main focus now is the Olympic Games and we will see what happens after that.”

Meanwhile, Turkey’s Gulson Tatar, who beat Ireland’s Allana Murphy in the earlier rounds of the Championships, retained her light-welterweight title last evening.

China’s Li Jinzi, who defeated Ireland’s Sinead Kavanagh in the middleweight preliminaries, lost out to Mary Spencer of Canada in the 75Kg decider.

Ceire Smith was also in action for Ireland at the 6th AIBA Women’s World Championships.

TAYLOR INTO THIRD WORLD FINAL

BY BERNARD O’NEILL (IABA PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER)

Ireland’s Katie Taylor and Queen Underwood of the USA lit up the 6th AIBA Women’s World Championships in a thrilling 60Kg semi-final in Barbados last night.

Taylor emerged victorious 18-16 to book her ticket into today’s (Saturday September 18th) final where she’ll meet China’s Cheng Dong in a repeat of the 2008 World Championships final which Taylor won 13-2 in Ningbo City, China.

The reigning champion, 24, who is aiming for her third AIBA World lightweight title in a row, appeared to be cruising to victory and was 10-1 up approaching the bell for the end of the second round in Bridgetown.

Showing tremendous hand speed the Bray woman was finding her target with power and precision and looked as if she was going to overwhelm the Seattle lightweight.

But, Underwood, who earned four of her points after Taylor received two public warnings for holding in the final two rounds, fought back heroically in the third and restored parity in the fourth and final frame.

However, Taylor showed the heart of a true champion to find the winning scores and claim an 18-16 verdict in the final few seconds of a bout which showcased just how far the female version of the noble art has evolved as a highly competitive international sport.

“It definitely wasn’t one of my best performances. My first round was a great round, but she is very strong and very awkward and I found it very hard to counter her punches,” said Taylor after the last four decider.

IABA Director of Boxing Dominic O’Rourke, who was at ringside for the clash, said that Taylor showed why she is a World champion going down the final stretch of a contender for bout of the tournament.

“Katie was brilliant in the first two rounds, but fair play to the American girl she had a great final two rounds and fought back very bravely. Katie showed tremendous character to win in the final half minute. It was a very exciting bout, edge of the seat stuff.

“Katie showed why she is World champion tonight. She has another big bout ahead of her again tomorrow. Saturday’s final will be another tough contest Katie, one that we’re all looking forward too.”

Friday’s win guarantees Taylor at least a silver medal from the 6th AIBA World Women’s Championships.

Saturday’s finals begin at 7pm (Irish time). It is estimated that Taylor and Dong will be in the ring between 8pm and 8.30pm this evening (Irish time).
