Everything indicates that the interim champ Luis ‘El Nica’ Concepcion will be declared the regular flyweight monarch according to the WBA rules. Concepcion could fight next in Japan in February or March.

.

  • Antonio Margarito By Rey Colon / The Sport Press — Antonio Margarito plans to go directly to a second showdown with Miguel Cotto in June in New York City, but first must receive the approval of his doctors next week and his plastic surgeon at the end of January according to Francisco Espinoza, one of the “Tijuana Tornado’s” handlers. Margarito suffered a dangerous injury to his right cheek in his clash with Manny Pacquiao, but Espinoza estimates that by May or June he would be in condition to fight Cotto, who is planning to defend his WBA junior middleweight belt against Ricardo Mayorga on March 12 in Las Vegas before moving to the grudge rematch with Margarito.

They are working on getting the date set, so hopefully this fight will be announced soon.

.

  • Katsidis wants Khan for April / May return — By James Slater - Australian warrior Michael Katsidis, who proved yet again in defeat to Mexican great Juan Manuel Marquez that he is never in a bad fight, is reportedly hungry for more big fights. According to his trainer and manager Brendan Smith, “The Great” is looking at returning to the ring in April or May. And who does the incredibly exciting lightweight title challenger have right at the top of his Hit-List? Why, Britain’s own Amir Khan, the reigning WBA 140-pound champ. — It seems Katsidis fancies a move up in weight, and in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald Smith made it clear his man is more than willing to return to the UK for a third time.

Alexander (21-0, 13 KOs), from St. Louis, will face undefeated World Boxing Organization junior welterweight champion Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley (26-0, 11 KOs), from North Palm Springs, Calif., at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich., on Jan. 29 in a long-awaited world championship unification match at the 140-pound weight limit. — “Don King has promoted me since the beginning of my professional career in 2004,” Alexander said from his Las Vegas training camp. “Mrs. King was with Don for over 50 years. Don has always been there for me, and I want to dedicate my performance on Jan. 29 to Mrs. King for always being there for Don. Mrs. King was a great lady and I was honored to have met her. I will honor her with the best performance of my life at the Silverdome in Pontiac.”

Boxers of Yesteryear - Tommy Burns

Tommy Burns “The Little Giant of Hanover” is not included among the greats but is perhaps very much underrated both as a boxer and from a historical point of view.

Burns was the first to travel the globe in defending his heavyweight title, the first heavyweight champion to give a Jewish boxer a shot at the crown and the first man to allow an African American a shot at the Heavyweight crown.

Tommy Burns was an Italian, born Noah Brusso in Chesley, Ontario, Canada, on June 17, 2024 – May 10, 2024 and is the only Canadian born world heavyweight champion boxer.

Brusso came from an impoverished family of thirteen children. The Brusso’s lacked even the most basic comforts, and were reduced to relying on the state for food and clothing.

Tommy soon left Canada and migrated south across the border where he settled in Detroit, hoping to find work and support himself. It was not long after his arrival in the United States that he entered the prize ring in 1902 and met with immediate success. Campaigning then as a middleweight, he rattled off a string of victories that was only interrupted by a pair of early losses to the tough veteran Mike Schreck, after which he picked up the Michigan State Middleweight Title.

After starting his boxing career under his real name, Brusso changed his alias in 1904, because his Italian Roman Catholic mother objected to boxing, he used the Irish sounding name of Tommy Burns to hide his participation from her.

.

Although only 5 feet 7 inches (170 cm) tall and about 175 pounds (79 kg), size did not stop him from becoming the world heavyweight boxing champion. When Burns met Marvin Hart for the heavyweight championship of the world on February 23, 1906, Burns was a 2-1 underdog and the betting was 10-7 that he would not last ten rounds. Burns won, and went on to defend his title eleven times within a period of less than two years.

All previous world champs had been white Americans, who only defended their titles against other white Americans. Burns, however, travelled the globe, beating the champions of every nation in which boxing was legal at that time, including England, Ireland, France and Australia. Along the way he set records for the fastest knockout (one minute and 28 seconds) and the most consecutive wins by knockout (eight) by a heavyweight champion. He was also the shortest heavyweight champ in history. He also defended his title twice in one night, although some historians refuse to accept those wins as title defenses, insisting they were exhibition bouts. But in newspapers at the time, they were advertised as heavyweight title fights. If those defenses are counted in his record, he actually successfully defended his title 13 times.

.

Burns changed sports forever by being the first man to allow an African American a shot at the Heavyweight crown. His biographer, Dan McCaffery, quoted Burns as saying, “I will defend my title against all comers, none barred. By this I mean white, black, Mexican, Indian, or any other nationality. I propose to be the champion of the world, not the white, or the Canadian, or the American. If I am not the best man in the heavyweight division, I don’t want the title.” Burns was also the first heavyweight champion to give a Jewish boxer a shot at the crown. Burns had defeated Joseph ‘Jewey’ Smith in a fight staged in Paris. On top of that, he had fought one bout with a Native American on his way up. Along the way he had set records for the fastest knockout (one minute and 28 seconds) and the most consecutive wins by knockout (eight) by a heavyweight champion.

In December 1908, history was made when Burns became the first fighter to agree to a heavyweight championship bout with a black boxer, Jack Johnson, to whom he lost his title in a match held in Sydney. He refused to fight Johnson until Australian promoter Hugh McIntosh paid him $30,000 for the fight (Johnson only received $5,000). He was rumoured to be suffering from the effects from jaundice or influenza, and weighed in at just 168 pounds (76 kg)—15 pounds (6.8 kg) lighter than his previous fight, and well below Johnson’s 192 pounds (87 kg). The fight lasted fourteen rounds before being stopped by the police. Referee Hugh McIntosh awarded the decision and the title to Johnson. In a filmed interview, Burns named Johnson as the second best boxer up to his time, after James J. Jeffries.

.

When Johnson arrived in Vancouver in 1909 he told a crowd of people that Burns deserved credit as the only white heavyweight who ever gave a black man a chance to win the title. He said, “Let me say of Mr. Burns, a Canadian and one of yourselves, that he has done what no one else ever did, he gave a black man a chance for the championship. He was beaten, but he was game.”

Burns continued to box occasionally after dropping the title. During the First World War he joined the Canadian army, serving as a physical fitness instructor in Canada. A month before his 39th birthday in 1920, he challenged British champion Joe Beckett. Burns lost the fight in what was officially his only knockout loss, but took in one last big payday before retiring.

After retirement, Burns promoted some boxing shows and in 1928 moved to New York City where he ran a speakeasy. Although he was wealthy at the end of his boxing career, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression wiped out his fortune. He then worked as an insurance salesman and security guard, among other jobs. Burns was ordained as a minister in 1948. He was an evangelist living in Coalinga, California at the time of his death.

Tommy passed away at the age of 73 after suffering a fatal heart attack.

.

He died while visiting a church friend in Vancouver, British Columbia, suffering a heart attack. Only four people attended his burial at Ocean View Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia. He was interred in an unmarked pauper’s grave until 1961 when, as the result of fundraising efforts begun by a Vancouver sports writer, a memorial plaque was finally placed on his grave.

Condolences to Angelo Dundee

The boxing world sends its condolences to legendary Hall of Fame trainer Angelo Dundee, whose beloved wife Helen died Thursday near their home in the Tampa area. She was 85 years old. Helen had suffered from various health problems in recent years. Angelo, who is recovering from hip surgery, has often said, “She is my toughest fighter.” Angelo and Helen would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in February. They might have seemed an unlikely pair when they first met. Angelo, an Italian from South Philly, was working the grimy gyms of New York. The former Helen Bolton, a “southern belle” from North Carolina, was a fashion model in New York City. Their union flourished through the years. A funeral will be held on Thursday at the Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home, Sunset Point Road in Clearwater, Florida. The viewing will be from 4-6 p.m. Condolences to Angelo, their son Jimmy, daughter Terri, and the entire Dundee family.

Theophane - Title Shot, Long Overdue

UK Boxing - Ashley “Treasure” Theophane, the current IBO International welterweight champion believes his shot at the British light welterweight title is now three years overdue. The globetrotting Londoner who has been training in America for the past five years sparring the likes of world champions Joan Guzman, Yuri Foreman, Elio Rojas and Paul Malignaggi will finally get his opportunity on February 5th, when he takes on Lenny Daws for the British light welterweight title at Wembley Arena.

“I won an eliminator back in 2007 against Alan Bosworth for the British title so my shot is three years overdue now. I’ve recently beaten world #3 and USBA champion Delvin Rodriguez so British champion Lenny Daws is a step back for me.” said Theophane.

Theophane who boasts wins over former world champion Demarcus Corley and then world number three Delvin Rodriguez believes that he is past domestic level and a world title shot will be on the cards soon. “My main focus is a World Title shot which will come one day but I feel that I have now past domestic level and my fight against Lenny will be a “keep busy” fight until a bigger fight comes along. The IBF contacted my management in September about a IBF World title eliminator against Randal Bailey but a deal couldn’t be agreed with the promoter. I was due to fight former world champion Steve Forbes in December so I’m constantly linked with the world elite as that’s what I am. Lenny is unknown outside of Britain and is trying to get to where I am right now.”

“Lenny Daws is a good Domestic fighter as he has shown, this being his second reign as British champion. He has had some stoppages of late which is good for him but just being Ashley Theophane will be enough to beat him.”

“I’m Lenny Daws best opponent to date but he is far from mine. I’m his big test. I have all his attributes. I’m just better.” Added Theophane.

The current British light welterweight champion, “Lightening” Lenny Daws new year’s resolution will be to join the elite crop of boxers including the likes of Carl Froch, Lennox Lewis and Sir Henry Cooper by winning the prestigious Lonsdale belt outright when he defends his title against Theophane.

Daws’ who is coming off a good win against Steve Williams, believes he has the strength, fitness and work rate to beat Theophane.

“I have had a look at a few of his fights and I was ringside for his last fight against Willie Thompson. He’s an experienced, good boxer, nice mover, good on his feet and has mixed with some top class fighters, but my style has all of the attributes, strength, fitness, pressure and work rate to beat this guy and within the distance”

Lenny isn’t relishing the training over Christmas but knows how important this fight is to him. “Training over the Christmas period is never easy or enjoyable for any boxer, there’s always the extra temptation like a sneaky mince pie or two, but I’m focused on beating him and securing the British belt outright.”

“This is what I have always wanted then I can start thinking about a European or World title challenge later in the year,” added Lenny.

Tickets are NOW on sale at £100, £75, £45 and £30

“DYNAMITE!! 2010” Predictions

.

K-1 Dynamite is Japan’s biggest annual martial arts event.

By Oliver Saenz

The fifteen-fight DREAM/K-1 “DYNAMITE!! 2010” super-card will combine MMA, K-1 kickboxing, and several unique “hybrid” bouts in a New Year’s Eve extravaganza that shouldn’t be missed. The event will feature some big names both in Japan and around the world, and as always, I just can’t help but pull out the crystal ball and unleash my inner Nostradamus. So let’s get to it with a new edition of “Picks and Predictions” featuring “DYNAMITE!! 2010”.

.

Jerome Le Banner vs. Satoshi Ishii: If you’re a fan of “striker vs. grappler” match-ups, you really can’t ask for more, since this fight pits a famous K-1 fighter against an Olympic gold medalist in judo. Both men are on a three-fight win-streak, but it’s been four long years since Le Banner has competed in an MMA setting. The amount of ring rust he’ll have going into this bout is all I need to know to predict that Ishii will win by submission in Round 1.

Sergei Kharitonov vs. Tatsuya Mizuno: Mizuno’s 8-6 record speaks for itself. While Kharitonov never fully emerged into the world-beater than many fans expected he would one day become, the fact remains that he’s faced a lot of high-level competition and even beaten a few of them. Even with a year-long layoff working against him, I think Kharitonov will win by TKO in Round 2.

Josh Thomson vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri: It’s going to end quickly, it’s going to end violently, and it’s going to be an absolute blast to watch. Kawajiri is going to come out headhunting and won’t stop until he gets the KO, that’s who he is and why he’s so entertaining. But Thomson is an expert on the ground and his striking game is downright under-rated. If Thomson can avoid any Hail Mary flurries as he shoots in or works his game, this should be a one-sided match. Thomson wins by submission in Round 1.

Bibiano Fernandes vs. Hiroyuki Takaya: My opinion on this fight closely mirrors my opinion on the Thomson vs. Kawajiri encounter. I think the pivoting point of this match will be whether or not Fernandes can once again avoid Takaya’s punching power while getting him to the ground. Fernandes has an excellent submission game and enough top control to grind out a decision if he’s not able to secure anything. While their first fight ended in a close Split Decision, I think Fernandes is going to take this one with a first-round submission.

Marius Zaromskis vs. Kazushi Sakuraba: It’s going to be an electric fight, that’s for sure. Marius Zaromskis desperately needs to get back in the win column, he basically shot himself in the foot with his US excursion. Considering how he went 0-2-1 with both losses being by TKO, that shot might as well have been from a shotgun. Sakuraba, meanwhile, is staring down retirement and this will probably be the last time he’ll ever fight for a championship. I hate to say it, but I think a deadly animal is always deadliest when cornered, and Zaromskis has a long, long time to land his patented head kick. Marius Zaromskis wins by brutal head kick KO in Round 1.

So that’s what I think, fans and friends. What about you? What kind of outcome do you think we’ll see when it comes to the big matches of “DYNAMITE!! 2010”?
