MMA News in Brief – Thursday, March 10 - Bellator Lightweight Champion, Cavalcante confident, Dan Henderson, Heath Herring Wants MMA Return, Matt Serra, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Jon Jones, Nate Marquardt, Sporthallen Zuid, Strikeforce, UFC, UFC 128 Betting lines, UFC president Dana White, Veteran Jon Olaf Einemo, WWE superstar David Batista

  • UFC 128 Betting lines have opened for March 19th’s UFC 128 and what may come as a surprise to some is the opening line for the main event that sees challenger Jon Jones as a -210 favorite over Champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua who opened at +165.

  • Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion Dan Henderson - has admitted that he would be interested in a fight with Russian MMA superstar Fedor Emelianenko. Henderson has recently been linked with a fight with Fedor, but the light-heavyweight champion admits a fight with the winner of Gegard Mousasi and Mike Kyle is more likely. - “Obviously, he’s still one of the top guys out there in the world, and it would be a huge challenge,” Henderson told MMAjunkie.com Radio. “It would interest me to go up.” Henderson managed to win the light-heavyweight title last weekend when he demolished Rafael Cavalcante. - “It’s got to be right up there at the top,” Henderson said of his title win. “The most recent, which always feels the best to you. But it had a lot of added pleasure, I should say, knowing that I’m 40 and can still compete at the top level. That definitely means a lot.”

  • Cavalcante confident he will come back stronger: Former light-heavyweight champion Rafael Cavalcante is confident that he will come back stronger from his loss to Dan Henderson. Cavalcante lost his light-heavyweight title to Henderson in Strikeforce’s Saturday night event at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

  • Norwegian heavyweight and PRIDE FC veteran Jon Olaf Einemo has joined the UFC, according to Fighters Only Magazine. Netherlands based Golden Glory team, who manage Einemo, has confirmed that their fighter has signed with the UFC. Einemo holds a 7-1 MMA record and his only defeat came against Fabricio Werdum at PRIDE 31. - “John Olaf Einemo also signed this week with the UFC. After a long battle with health the Scandinavian Viking is back and ready to make up for lost time. Look out UFC, you’ve just been put on notice,” a line from the Golden Glory press release reads.

  • The co-main event of Sunday’s It’s Showtime: Sporthallen Zuid Amsterdam event.

  • Matt Serra hasn’t competed since his September loss to Chris Lytle at UFC 119, and chances are he won’t be returning to action in the immediate future. Serra’s long-time coach, Ray Longo, said on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour, that with Serra’s wife expecting the couple’s second child in April and a lingering hand injury still bothering the former UFC welterweight champion, the 36-year-old Serra will most probably remain on the sidelines for a good portion of 2011.

  • Heath Herring Wants MMA Return - Away from MMA competition for nearly three years, UFC heavyweight Heath Herring says he definitely wants to return to the cage — but only under the right circumstances. “It would have to make sense not only business-wise, but financially as well and I just don’t know if that’s in the cards at this moment,” Herring told Ariel Helwani Monday on MMAFighting.com’s The MMA Hour. On the show, Herring said he has not been training MMA full-time and would need to devote the majority of his time towards training if he wants to be fight in today’s competitive landscape.

  • Nate Marquardt will look to get back on the winning side of things and impressing the UFC brass when he takes on Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 128 - Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on March 19. In response to Dana White’s criticism Marquardt said “I don’t really pay attention to that kind of stuff (Dana White calling me “a choker”). It’s just not true of me. You have to deal with that talk crap all the time and just basically brush it off. I gotta stick to what I gotta do.”

  • Former WWE superstar David Batista could make his mixed martial arts debut this year, but it is not expected to take place in the US. MMAWeekly.com reports that Batista could make his MMA debut for the British based BAMMA promotion in May. Several promotions have been trying to sign Batista, but reports claim BAMMA could win the race for his signature, ahead of their upcoming card at the Wembley Arena. Batista is keen to make his MMA debut ahead of September, when he is set to start shooting an undisclosed film project, according to MMAWeekly.com.

  • Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez will defend his title against Season 2 tournament Champion Jeff Curran at Bellator 39 on April 2nd and for the Alvarez, who holds a spot in the lightweight rankings, fighting a challenger like the un-ranked Curran makes for an worrisome training camp: “My anxiety increases because I can’t have a guy that is not well known take my name, take my spot”.

  • UFC president Dana White believes Michael Bisping’s illegal knee on Jorge Rivera at UFC 127 was intentional. White insists Bisping is in trouble following his antics after his fight with Rivera at UFC 127. “Michael Bisping is in trouble right now. Bisping is a guy who I’ve liked and had a good relationship with since TUF but I’m very disappointed with the way he conducted himself during that fight. I feel the knee was intentional, he saw him in that position, looked at him and threw the knee,” he said. “Obviously I don’t like what he did after the fight either. Mike and I still need to talk and then I’ll figure out what’s next for Michael Bisping.”

  • The UFC announced today the final card for the promotions return to the state of New Jersey on Saturday March 19th.
