Hopkins- Pascal: Reprehensible Behavior

By Alexander Zammit

March 31

The recent Hopkins- Pascal press conference in Montreal could only be described as a debacle that leaves much to be desired on the part of both boxers.

Bad behavior of this sort is what gives the sport a negative reputation. What happened (28th) just a few days ago is most definitely not a case of a little harmless hype or even a little trash talk, involving a few harmless insults.

Looking at the released video it seems that Pascal started it all – Taking the microphone and going into a tantrum shouting repeatedly that Bernard Hopkins must take a blood test - “Will you take the stand?” Pascal screamed into the mike.

To his credit Hopkins, seems to make an effort to control himself but then loses it as well and decides to join the melee.

.

Unfortunately such scenes at boxing conferences are becoming more commonplace. Excessive trash talk, personal insults, wild accusations and aggressive behavior are sending out the wrong message.

It is small wonder that boxing is losing its allure. Such reprehensible behavior is not likely to attract a family audience.

Boxers who behave badly should be penalized. Boxing commissions the world over should withhold part of the purse money whenever this type of negative, sordid behavior emerges and in extreme cases even postpone or ban the fight altogether.

At this level the participants should be acting as role models to emerging and upcoming young professionals.

Boxers should also keep in mind that those huge payouts are ultimately funded by the aficionados.

Such scenes as these are disrespectful to the sport and the fans.

Top Rank–Donaire Contract Enforced

Judge Orders Golden Boy To Stop Promoting Nonito Donaire “The Filipino Flash”, Arum Wins Suit

The mediator and arbitrator in the legal clash between Bob Arum (Top Rank) and Golden Boy Promotions (Richard Schaeffer), the Honorable Daniel Weinstein - on the matter of boxer Nonito Donaire, has ruled that there is an enforceable contract in existence between Donaire and Top Rank.

In the belief that he was a free agent it is reported that Nonito accepted the offer made by Golden Boy Promotions of an undisclosed signing-on fee plus a guarantee of earnings of at least one million dollars in the next year.

Donaire apparently hired the legal services of Las Vegas, attorney John Bailey and sent a letter to Top Rank, informing them of his decision to accept the Golden Boy offer. Top rank apparently sent out their own legal letter before the contract expired, exercising their right of an option for a one year extension written in the contract.

Bob Arum acting on behalf of Top Rank decided to challenge this and said, “We have a valid, enforceable contract and we’ll pursue our legal rights against Donaire, Golden Boy and anyone else who is involved. We are absolutely confident we will prevail.”

After studying the agreements in existence Judge Weinstein decided in favour of Top Rank and gave his judgment accordingly.

It seems that the contract between Nonito and Top Rank was for a period of three years but on the expiry of this term there was an option of a one year extension to the contract and that Top Rank wished to take advantage of this extension.

Commenting on this legal decision Bob Arum said, “Adding in the time we lost, it pushes the contract to 2013. So what this kid has to do now is to live up to the contract”.

Graham Earl’s Belfast Show Postponed

By Rio

London - Wednesday, 30th March 2011

Graham Earl’s Belfast Show Postponed

Former WBU Lightweight World Champion, turned promoter, Graham Earl announced earlier today that this Saturday’s ‘Fists of Fury’ event, at the King’s Hall in Belfast, has been postponed,

The event, which was to be headlined by current WBU Lightweight World Champion Willie Limond versus Jay Morris, was intended to showcase many of the Belfast boxers Graham recently signed.

On making the announcement Graham said, “I’m really disapointed that we have had to postpone Fists of Fury, it had all the makings of being a really fantastic show.

It’s been one of those weeks, various circumstances conspired to put the show at risk early in the week, but when we started to get fighter injuries as well we couldn’t see any other option, but to postpone the show.

We’re disappointed for the fans, who had been showing their support and getting behind the local fighters. We’re disappointed for all the fighters that were going to take part, especially the lads that were going to be debuting.

We’re hoping to reschedule the show for later in the year, unfortunately it can’t be for a few months as we already have shows scheduled for the coming months.”

It is expected that Graham Earl will be announcing a revised date for Belfast in the near future. In the meantime Graham Earl Promotions next show will be at York Hall in London on Saturday 7th May 2011.
