Marco Huck vs Ola Afolabi 5/5
WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck (34-2, 25 KOs) will make his mandatory defence against interim champion Ola Afolabi (19-2-3, 9 KOs) in Erfurt, Germany on May 5. It will be the second time the two fighters face each other in the ring, with Huck clinching a close points victory in their first meeting in December 2009.
“I had just won the title against Victor Emilio Ramirez and then had to make my first defence against Afolabi,” Huck said. It was a tough fight and I won on points. Afolabi has been victorious in all of his fights ever since. He seems to have gotten stronger. I will be prepared for a hard night on May 5.”
After challenging WBA Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetkin in February, Huck will have to lose weight again. “He weighed around 95 kilos prior to the Povetkin fight,” coach Ulli Wegner said. “Now he has to lose five kilos. That is something new for him. He has a lot of muscles, so it won´t be easy. But we will get it done during the hard preparation.”
Ireland: Women’s Boxing International
By Michael O’Neill
Ireland 24-03-2024
A historic first ever women’s boxing international in Ireland last night was inevitably dominated by Katie Taylor whose 25-5 win over Dutch champion Jessica Belder was watched by a few hundred spectators in the Stadium and countless others at home and abroad via the IABA’s welcome ‘Live streaming’ coverage of all eight bouts.
As another step on the Road to London (hopefully) via the World’s in Qinhuangdao, China this was a good start to a week which will also see her fight in Cavan (against the same opponent tomorrow), in Cork on 30th against 2011 Golden Gloves champion, Liz Leddy from Portland,Maine (USA) and in Dungarvan on 31st March when she meets N’yteeyah Sherman, the highly promising, 6ft tall, 19yrs old from Barberton, Ohio who came within a single point of defeating Queen Underwood at last month’s U.S Olympic Trials.
But let us not forget that this was also a night in which several of the Irish team made their debuts at Senior international level so special mention to Sarah Close of the Holy Family GG who defeated Willeke Verdellen (13-6) and Callan’s Clare Grace an impressive 21-19 winner over Lisa de Vilder.
An encouraging performance too from another making her senior debut, 16 years old, Christine Gargan of the St George’s Club, who albeit she was defeated by the Dutch title holder Alicia Holsken 7-10 will have benefited from the experience.
Defeat too for Drimnagh’s Sinead Kavanagh, who went under 17-9 against Nouchka Fontijn but let us remember that Nouchka is the European Gold medallist from Rotterdam and one of the favourites for an Olympic medal in London. The two will resume their rivalry when the two countries meet again at the Cavan Crystal Hotel tomorrow.
An excellent win for Michelle Lynch of the Golden Gloves club in Belmullet, Co Mayo, against the Australian Olympic trials winner Bianca Elmir 14-14 but 42/41 on count back to the Irish woman. Ireland’s other winner on this ‘special night’ was Dervla Duffy from the Ryston club, a very deserving 21-12 victory over Kristen Fraser, the 22 yrs old economics student at Aberdeen University.
For Taylor though this brought back memories of her first ever bout at the famous old Stadium back on 31 October 2023 when the then 15 years old from Bray met and defeated 16 years old Alanna Audley (now ABAE champion Alanna Murphy). This was the first ever licensed women’s bout in Ireland and who could have foreseen on that Halloween the great success story that is Katie Taylor. Happy memories of that night? :
“Yeah, I made history here when I fought Alanna back then,” Taylor told the ‘Irish Times’.
“She’s one of my best friends now, would you believe? She’s still boxing. She’s over in England. The two of us, we made history that day.”
History that day? – yes, and who knows perhaps further even more historic triumphs await. Only time will tell.

City Boys, and Girls, Prepare To Battle It Out On March 30th
Bad Boy Promotions head honcho Chrissy Morton has a passion for boxing, so much so that she gave up a lucrative career in the City to focus on promoting boxing events. Not just any boxing events though, Chrissy’s passion is the White Collar Boxing phenomenon that has swept like wildfire throughout the financial districts Worldwide over the past decade or so.
What makes White Collar Boxing stand apart from the Amateur and Professional scene is that those taking part don’t come from a boxing background, mostly they work in the City by day wheeling and dealing on the financial markets or practising law.
Those working in the City tend to be competitive by nature, as such it shouldn’t come come as any surprise that to ‘relax’ they would choose something competitive like White Collar Boxing.
Which is exactly why back in 1988 the founding protagonists, New York attorney Dr. Richard Novak and Dr. David Lawrence, who held a Phd. in English, decided upon the challenge of a boxing contest, which took place at the famed Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, NY.
There was no bet as such, it was purely in order to ‘test themselves’ and then after the contest the two Gentlemen went to dinner to celebrate the birth of a new sport.
The news of the contest spread and soon after there were White Collar boxing events taking place throughout the World financial centres, especially London which now has a thriving White Collar Boxing scene, which brings us nicely back to Chrissy Morton and her Bad Boy Promotions organisation.
Already having a couple of successful events under her belt Chrissy’s has stepped things up for her next all action White Collar Boxing event , titled ‘This Is It’, which will take place just a stones throw from the City and Canary Wharf, at the Troxy in Limehouse, London, on Friday 30th March 2012.
Not only has Chrissy taken the training of her weekend warriors to a more professional level, by moving her training to London’s premier pro boxing gym, the famous TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, in Canning Town deep in the heart of London’s East End, but she has also attracted stars from the World of Athletics and Music to participate in the show.
Following one of the training sessions Chrissy spoke of her passion for the sport and her upcoming 30th March event, “I’ve always loved boxing, I’ve always watched it.
I fell into this by mistake after one of the guys on the trading floor was having a White Collar fight and we all wanted to go. However he was only allocated one table so most of us couldn’t go.
After that we decided to do our own show, which we did in the middle of the City in Liverpool Street and that’s where it all started.
My next show will be on the 30th March at the Troxy. We’ll have around twenty four bouts, mainly it will be guys boxing but we do have a few female bouts as well.
Some of the bouts will be grudge matches, against the infamous ‘Essex Boys’ from Hornchurch.
This came about after some of their boys came to our last show and lay down a challenge and it built up from there. At this event we’ll have eight belts that are going to be fought for in the Bad Boy Promotions Vs. Essex Boys Challenge.
Q & A of: Undefeated Randy Caballero
Q & A of: Golden Boy’s Undefeated Super Bantamweight Randy Caballero - Never Give Up, Never Surrender!
Super Bantamweight: Randy “El Matador” Caballero vs. Jose Luis “Tapitas” Araiza
CABALLERO: “Never Give Up, Never Surrender!”
By: Carlos Gomez, Principal - CG Boxing Public Relations
Event: March 16th 2012 Golden Boy Promotions Main Event on SHO Box at
Fantasy Springs Resort Casino
(Indio, California, U.S.A.)
Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Golden Boy’s Nicaraguan-American, un-defeated (13-0, 7 k.o.’s) rising star and WBC, Youth Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight Champion Randy “El Matador” Caballero. We wanted to get a better understanding of who this fighter is. bringing him closer to the boxing audience from a slightly different perspective. Placing the boxing audience up front and close to the psyche of a fighter and his motivation for his decisions and ultimately his plan for career successes.
Gomez:Thank you for taking time from your training schedule to speak with us and talk to us about your up and coming fight with Jose Luis “Tapitas” Araiza (29-5-1, 20 ko’s).
Q:How is your training going?
A: “I’m feeling the urgency of now to diligently prepare for my March 16th fight at Fantasy Springs Casino in front of my home crowd. I am training very hard, sparring with a great group of guys that keep me focused and sharp. I feel that the sparring I’ve done in the past with Nonito Donaire (WBO Super Bantamweight Champ., “The Filipino Flash”, 28-1-0, 18 ko’s) has added a great deal of experience to my boxing style.”
Q:Give us some in-sight as to your up bringing in the Caballero family. What was that like?
A: “The Caballero family consists of three siblings; I have one older brother and two younger brothers. My family is rooted in boxing as my father was a fighter and my older brother was too. As you can imagine, our evenings would include many living room sibling fights. My family is the core, support and inspiration since my first fight at eight years old. They will be my titanium spine of support. Dad has taught me everything I know. No family is perfect…however, we are a tight knit family and part of our family values consist of hard-work ethic, working out to stay strong and healthy; An attitude and demeanor to never give up, never surrender!…Persistence and respect are huge morals and values in my life and in the Caballero family.”
Q: Who are your mentors, role models?
A: “MyDad and older brother (Robert Caballero) are. I vividly remember watching his fights and witnessing first hand the psychological, physical and strategic breakdown of his opponents in the ring. It is those boxing characteristics that has brought me much inspiration to my style of fighting. A fighter which has also given me much inspiration for the person he was and his disposition was Nicaraguan boxing legend Alexis “El Flaco Explosivo” Arguello (died at the age of 57 on July 1st 2009). His explosiveness in the ring and tactical dismantling of his opponents are all things I admired about him. I try to be a student of boxing by studying film; observing fighters tendencies and training regiments. I look at all things to give me an edge. I feel very fortunate to have sparred with boxing greats like Nonito Donaire while he was in preparation for the (Fernando “Cochulito”) Montiel fight that resulted in a technical knock out win in the second round. It was an amazing experience to have done that with him and I see that as an important part of continued boxing growth and maturity.”
Gomez:Your opponent is coming to your March 16th fight with a draw against a tough Jesus Rojas (18-1-1, 13 ko’s) fight…
Q: How are you approaching the March 16th, fight vs. Jose Luis Araiza?
A: “I don’t care who they put in front of me…I’m there, I train 110% in the gym and I work hard so that I’m prepared for anything. We’ve been working on a various styles, we know anyone they put in front of me to fight will come in swinging. We are working on a variety of techniques, including added head movement and footwork. We are working on mitigating the stifling, high pressure type of fighter as well as other styles.”
Q: What does your career blue print look like for success?
A: “The recipe for my success lies with being a member of Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and the work that my Manager,Cameron Ducandoes. The continued guidance that both my Dad and Brother give me will continue to guide the path of my career. I will continue to fight at Super (Bantamweight) and then slowly move up in weight classes to take on additional challenges. I would like to thank the boxing pubic, especially the Coachella Valley public for supporting me in what I’ve done so far. I will continue to work hard to prove myself to all of the fight fans. I can be followed on Twitter:@TeamCaballero and on the web: teamcaballero.com”
Gomez: Randy, thank you for taking time to speak with me. I appreciate your sincerity in answering all of the questions. I believe that the fight public will better understand who you are and what keeps the fire the burns deep within your heart as a fighter.
I’d like to thank Mr. Caballero’s (Randy’s Dad), Publicist Jesse Garcia and Boxing All Media Network Principal, Bernardo Miguel for making this interview possible.
