Teenager O’Callaghan Gets Another Stern Test, Faces Scriven on 4th June
This Saturday Islington teenage boxer Brett O’Callaghan makes his second professional outing, against the experienced Nottingham battler Matt Scriven, at the Olivia Goodwin Main Events promoted ‘Search & Destroy’ event at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on the 4th June 2011.
O’Callaghan endured a real baptism of fire on his 4th December debut, which fell just one day after his nineteenth birthday. Not only was his opponent switched at the last minute from Gary Cooper, a relatively inexperienced fighter, to the one hundred and one fight veteran Billy Smith, but he also badly damaged his hand early on in the fight.
The youngster showed maturity beyond his tender years by controlling his much older opponent with fast hands and solid jabs. As the fight moved into to the second half Smith tried to bully the younger O’Callaghan back onto the ropes without success as the savvy youth used smart footwork and his solid jabs to keep Smith at bay and earn a tidy 39-37 points victory.
Early in May, after months of physiotherapy to a damaged knuckle ligament at the London Hand Clinic, O’Callaghan returned to full training under the tutorledge of Alec Wilkey, at the TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, to prepare for his upcoming showdown with Scriven.
Following a training session earlier O’Callaghan spoke briefly on the injury and his upcoming fight, “My first fight was against Billy Smith in December, I won it but tore a ligament in my knuckle. I’ve been having physio since then and it’s all good now. My hands better now so I can’t wait for June 4th.
I’ve not seen Matt Scriven fight before but there’s a few guys here at the gym that have fought him, so I’ve been getting some good advice that should help me on the night.
Alec (coach Alec Wilkey) and myself been working on some things. Training’s been going really well, I feel strong. Stronger and sharper than I did before my first fight.
Sparring’s been really good, been sparring Erick Ochieng, Nathan Weise and Danny Connor. Yeah, sparring’s been really good.
I’m really looking forward to Saturday, it’s going to be a great show. It’s been six months since I fought so I’m going to enjoy every minute of the fight. Hopefully at the end I’ll have my second win.”
Brett O’Callaghan versus Matt Scriven will be part of the fifteen bout undercard supporting the Ryan Barrett - Geoffrey Munika International Masters lightweight Title fight at the Olivia Goodwin Main Events promoted ‘Search & Destroy’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th June 2011.
Tickets, priced £35 (Standard seated) and £50 (Ringside) for the ‘Search and Destroy’ event are available on-line now atwww.tkoboxoffice.com, in person at The TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA or from any boxer appearing on the show. Jimmy Tibbs On Colin Lynes and Prizefighter
Interview: Jimmy Tibbs On Colin Lynes and Prizefighter - Welterweights II
By Gianluca (Rio) Di Caro
During his half a century in boxing Jimmy Tibbs has done it all, a highly decorated amateur and professional boxer, manager and promoter, but of all his pugilistic talents he is without doubt best know as the UK’s most successful boxing coach and fight strategist.
Among the veritable Who’s Who of champions that have benefited from Jimmy’s expert knowledge are Nigel Benn, Chris Pyatt, Steve Collins, Lloyd Honeyghan, Denis Andries, Charlie Magri, Barry McGuigan, Alex Arthur, Frank Bruno, Wayne Alexander, Jimmy McDonnell, Mo Hussein, Michael Watson, Gary Mason, Danny Williams, Gary Stretch, Nicky Wilshire, Horace Notice, Mark Kaylor, Tony Wilson, Maurice Core and Manning Galloway.
Now that’s a pretty impressive CV, but it doesn’t end there as Jimmy’s class of 2011, at the TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, includes former IBO Light Welterweight Champion of the World Colin Lynes, two weight Inter-Continental Champion Kevin Mitchell and his brother Vinny, former Olympian Billy Joe Saunders as well as rising stars Freddie Turner and Billy Morgan.
It’s clear that if anyone knows what it takes to win in the ring it’s Jimmy Tibbs, so with that in mind I caught up with him to gather his thoughts on one of his current charges, the aforementioned Colin Lynes, as well as his view on the other fighters Colin may face at the upcoming Prizefighter - Welterweights II on June 7th.
- Rio- Jimmy, you’re currently preparing Colin Lynes for the Prizefighter - Welterweights II on June 7th, what are your thoughts on Colin and his chances in the competition?
- Jimmy - I’m impressed with Colin Lynes, He’s in good condition, he’s always in good condition. The way he lives his life, he lives like a proper athlete, nothing’s too much for him, whether it’s three rounds or twelve rounds.
For Prizefighter he’ll be in condition to go as far as it goes, he’ll do it.
- Rio - What are your thoughts on the Prizefighter series?
- Jimmy - Well I think Prizefighter is a good competition. Three rounds, you’ve still got to train hard for three rounds, if you want to win it you’ve got to be in there very fast.
I think it’s a good competition and a good eye opener for prospects as well as old campaigners. People have gone on to British or other titles. It’s a good stepping stone . I like it.
The Prizefighters I’ve been to and worked in I’ve really enjoyed. I’m sure that every fighter I’ve worked with enjoyed it as well.
- Rio- Colin may come up against an old foe Junior Witter, what’s your thoughts on him?
- Jimmy - You’ve got Junior Witter, he’s a good fighter. He was World Champion and he lost the title to Timothy Bradley, which was down to himself really.
He’s still a good fighter, he’s still dangerous, good puncher, a switch hitter. I think he’ll be in condition for the fight, he’s been a good pro for a few years. Yeah we’ve got a lot of respect for him. We’re ready for him.
We’re confident, it doesn’t matter who we come up against. It’s no good me saying we’re going to beat Junior Witter because Junior will say the same thing about us. We’re confident about the way we’ve trained, in three rounds we’re capable of beating anyone in the competition.
- Rio - Another TKO Gym fighter is also in the competition, Bobby Gladman, give us your thoughts on him.
- Jimmy - Bobby’s a good fighter, he’s a little inexperienced, which may find him out I suppose, but we’ll have to wait and see.
- Rio- Your thoughts on Yassine El Maachi?
- Jimmy - We’ve seen Yassine El Maachi a few times. He’s another switch hitter. He’s a good puncher, but what you can’t hit you can’t hurt.
- Rio - OK, what about Nathan Graham?
- Jimmy - Another good fighter, but as I say we are ready for them all.
- Rio - You obviously know about John Wayne Hibbert as he used to train here, so what’s your thoughts on him?
- Jimmy - John Wayne Hibbert, yeah I know a lot about John actually. He sparred with Kevin Mitchell for the Prescott fight. Very game, if he gets fit he could get better than he is.
As I say we are going to show respect for all the fighters in the competition and we’ll be ready and we’re confident we’re going to win it.
- Rio- Next up is Bermondsey’s Peter McDonagh
- Jimmy - Peter’s an old campaigner, never lets you down, he’ll be in there trying.
He’ll be trying, plugging away. For three rounds he’ll be dangerous, he could nick it off you. We’re very aware of Peter.
- Rio- OK, the final one on the list is Kevin McIntyre
- Jimmy - Well I haven’t seen much of Kevin so I can’t really comment. The only thing I’ll say is that we’re ready for anyone that’s in the competition.
Prizefighter - Welterweights II, featuring Colin Lynes, Junior Witter, Yassine El Maachi, Kevin McIntyre, John Wayne Hibbert, Bobby Gladman, Nathan Graham and Peter McDonagh, takes place at York Hall, Bethnal Green in London on Tuesday 7th June 2011.
Tickets, priced £35 (Unreserved), SOLD OUT (Ringside), and £100 (VIP) are available now at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at the TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA or call 07960 850645

Dan Woodgate - Someone’s In Trouble On June 4th

Dan Woodgate - Someone’s In Trouble On June 4th
Minster, Kent’s exciting Light Heavyweight prospect Dan ‘Woody’ Woodgate is set for his fifth professional outing, at the Olivia Goodwin Main Events promoted ‘Search & Destroy’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th June 2011.
Classy and slick are words that come to mind to describe Woodgate’s performance on his last outing, against Newark’s Jamie Norkett in Dagenham back in March. From start to finish Woodgate dominated proceedings and in the later rounds looked as if he could have finished the fight at will, having rocked the durable Norkett on various occasions.
Earlier today Woodgate spoke briefly about the March fight and his upcoming bout on June 4th, “My last fight went really well, just as planned. I’d picked up an injury with the first punch of the third round, my left shoulder went and I couldn’t lift my left arm properly.
I thought it was going to be really noticeable, I just couldn’t get it back. After that happened I think I started boxing better. I started bringing my right hand into play, and uppercuts and made it easy for myself really.
He was a good tough lad. I knew I would never have stopped him with one hand so there wasn’t any point in trying to go for it in the last round. I knew I was winning so just carried on with the good boxing and didn’t take any chances.
Not a clue who I’m fighting yet, not too worried. I was chatting with Steve Goodwin and said to him my training camp started a couple of weeks ago and I’m already feel like I’m a month ahead of myself to where I was last time.
Fitness wise I’m in a lot better position this time. Whereas last time I was living out of hotels and wasn’t able to eat properly, obviously because I didn’t have cooking facilities.
I feel a lot better in myself, lot healthier, lot fresher and I think I’m punching a lot harder. Basically on June 4th you’re going to see the same Dan Woodgate, just a little bit better I think. I don’t try to change too many things, I believe if something works just stick with it.
I’ve got a new trainer, I’ve been with him six months now. I go up to training camp with him and learn something new so obviously you’ll see different things but style wise it’ll be the same Dan Woodgate.
Better punching, bigger punching Dan Woodgate so I think someone’s in trouble on June 4th.”
Dan ‘Woody’ Woodgate, against a yet to be named opponent, will be part of the fifteen bout undercard supporting the Ryan Barrett - Geoffrey Munika International Masters lightweight Title fight at the Olivia Goodwin Main Events promoted ‘Search & Destroy’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th June 2011.
Tickets, priced £35 (Standard seated) and £50 (Ringside) for the ‘Search and Destroy’ event are available on-line now at www.tkoboxoffice.com, in person at The TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA or from any boxer appearing on the show. WSB: Five New World Champions
WSB 5 New World Champions
The inaugural season of the World Series of Boxing came to a close tonight as Sergiy Derevyanchenko of the Ukraine and Abdelhafid Benchabla of Algeria won the world titles at middleweight and light heavyweight and picked up the last two quota places for the London 2012 Olympic Games available through the World Series of Boxing.
BY WSB: Saturday, 28th May
The night’s action at the University of Guizhou Stadium opened with the middleweight contest between Sergiy Derevyanchenko of Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder and Soltan Migitinov of the Baku Fires.
Derevyanchenko took a second title of the weekend for the Milan team with a unanimous decision over his Azeri opponent (68-64, 68-64, 69-63) after seven punishing rounds from which both boxers emerged sporting battle scars.
The bout opened with a fast pace and showcased the full arsenal of boxing skills, with body blows, uppercuts and hooks captivating the capacity crowd.
Derevyanchenko dominated the contest, keeping Migitinov on the ropes for a full 15 seconds at the end of the third round, then scoring a knock-down in the final round.
“This was a tough fight and I’m delighted with the Olympic qualification,” he said.
“I could feel that the bout was something special and I hope we gave the crowd a good show.”
Algeria’s Abdelhafid Benchabla, who boxes for the Pohang Poseidons, closed out the inaugural World Series of Boxing season with a consummate display against France’s Ludovic Groguhe of Paris United in the light heavyweight contest.
He took the WSB light heavyweight world title with a win by unanimous decision (69-64, 68-65, 68-65).
It looked like the fight might not last the seven rounds as Groguhe exploded out of his corner at the start of the bout, but it was Benchabla who took control of the first four rounds.
Some taunting and dancing by Benchabla in the fourth round seemed to stir Groguhe into a response in the fifth, which he won. By the sixth round, though, it was clear that only a knock-out could win the fight for Groguhe.
“I am the first WSB World Champion at this weight and I’m proud that my name and my country will go down in the WSB history,” Benchabla said after the fight.
“I’m also proud to be the first champion from Africa.
“It was the fact that I could be the first Algerian to qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games that spurred me on to victory tonight.”
The five WSB Individual Champions were awarded a cheque for 20,000 US dollars, the WSB titleholder’s belt and all receive a quota place for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
