Malignaggi Stops Senchenko

LOS ANGELES, April 29 - “The Magic Man” is back on top. Using pinpoint accurate punches and a punishing attack from start to finish, Brooklyn’s Paulie Malignaggi stopped previously unbeaten Vyacheslav Senchenko in the ninth round on Sunday to win the World Boxing Association (WBA) world welterweight championship.

Fighting at the Donbass Arena in Senchenko’s hometown of Donetsk, Ukraine, Malignaggi took away the home crowd advantage almost immediately, dominating the bout until referee Steve Smoger deemed Senchenko unable to continue due to a grotesquely swollen left eye.

“This is the happiest day of my life,” said an elated Malignaggi from his dressing room in Donetsk. “I trained really hard for this fight and believed in myself. I don’t care what anyone says, I’m a two-division world champion. This is exactly why I signed with Golden Boy. I’m ready to fight any welterweight in the world.”

“Paulie went into the lion’s den and again showed everyone what he is all about,” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. “With his dominating performance, he put everyone at 147 lbs. on notice. Ever since he moved to the welterweight division, he has assembled one thrilling performance after another and now the crowning achievement…Welterweight World Champion! Brooklyn here we come!”

With the win, the 31-year old Malignaggi, now 31-4 with 7 knockouts, becomes a two-time and two division world champion, having previously held the IBF junior welterweight crown from 2007 to 2008.

Pro Boxing Returns To Lowell, Massachusetts

altHome of “Irish” Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund – for the first time in seven years, on Wednesday night, May 9 at Lowell Memorial Auditorium. Local fan favorites “Irish” Joe McCreedy and Sean Eklund, whose uncles are Micky and Dicky, will fight in front of their hometown fans for the first time as pros on the “Homecoming” card, and former world champion “Vicious” Vivian Harris will be making his Bay State debut.

“Homecoming” is presented by Chicago Fight Clubs Promotion (“CFC Promotion”). “We signed Joey and Sean and they both fought on our last show in Burbank, Illinois (Oct. 7),” CFC Promotion president Cynthia Tolaymat explained why a Chicago promoter is doing a show in Massachusetts. “The two fighters and Dicky Eklund spoke to me and my husband, Wasfi Tolaymat, who now manages Joey and Sean, about the possibility of doing a show in Lowell. We liked the idea of Joey and Sean featured on a show in their hometown. I have faith in them and their legendary trainers, Micky and Dicky. Lowell may be a small city but it has so many GOOD boxing fans. We have been welcomed with open arms in Lowell. We’re looking forward to the May 9th show and it being the first of many there for CFC Promotion. ”

The popular McCreedy (13-5-2, 6 KOs) takes on Benjamin “El Trapicha” Diaz (11-6-2, 8 KOs) in the 10-round main event for the vacant United States Boxing Organization (“USBO”) super middleweight title. McCreedy is trained by Dicky Eklund at Micky Ward’s gym in nearby Chelmsford. Eklund (10-4, 2 KOs), trained by Ward, faces light welterweight James Ventry in an eight-round bout.

Harris (29-7-2, 19 KOs), a Guyana native fighting out of Brooklyn, squares-off against Jermaine “Too Sweet” White (17-4, 9 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature for the vacant USBO welterweight title. In 2002, Harris captured the World Boxing Association (“WBA) light welterweight championship, stopping Diosbelys Hurtado the second round. Vivian successfully defended his WBA crown three times against Soulemane M’baye and Oktay Urkal twice.

Also fighting on the card is hot Chicago light welterweight prospect Antonio “Aztec God of War” Canas (6-0, 3 KOs), who faces the stiffest test of his young career in a six-round match versus Tyrone Chatman (9-1-1, 6 KOs). Also on the undercard in a pair of four-round bouts is pro-debuting welterweight Jimmy Smith, of Portland (ME), vs. Rafael Vasinmo, of Lawrence (MA); pro-debuting middleweight Bernie Ongewe, of Dracut (MA) vs. Anthony Jones (0-0-1). Smith is a former New England Golden Gloves Tournament winner who served two tours in Iraq as a U.S. Marine. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Harris and Canas are handled by CFC Promotion, which also promotes IBF International light welterweight champion Albert “Tornado” Mensah, who successfully defended his title against Michael Katsidis, as well as world middleweight title challenger Osumanu Adama.

Tickets, reasonably priced at $25.00, $40.00 and $75.00, may be purchased by calling 978.761.8374 or at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium box office. Doors open at 6 PM/ET, first both scheduled for 7:00 PM/ET. Go to www.cfcpromotion.com or www.irishjoemccreedy.com for additional information.

Mathis vs. Holm II Confirmed For WBF World Title

It’s now confirmed that a rematch between perhaps the two best pound-for-pound female boxers in the world, and definitely the two best welterweights, Anne Sophie Mathis (26-1, 22 KOs) of France and American Holly Holm (30-2-3, 9 KOs), will take place on June 15 in Albuquerque, New Mexico for Mathis’ World Boxing Federation World Welterweight title.

This serves as clear indication that the WBF is already the top sanctioning body for female boxing, and WBF president Howard Goldberg, who will be acting as supervisor for the bout, is delighted about the progress his organization has made in short time: “We have many of the absolute best female boxers as our world champions, and it is only fitting that the rematch between these two amazing fighters is for the WBF title. I think it’s outstanding that the WBF is already at the very top when it comes to women’s boxing, but I am not surprised that promoters and boxers are realizing that our title is the title to pursue”.

Mathis and Holm had a grueling encounter last December with Mathis winning by seventh round knockout. As their original fight, the rematch, appropriately billed as “The Reckoning”, will take place at Route 66 Casino Hotel, and will be promoted by Fresquez Productions. It will be Mathis’ third defense of the WBF World title she won in June of last year.

Middleweight - Billy Joe Saunders beat Tony Hill by TKO 1 / 10 - vacant Commonwealth (British Empire) middleweight title

Light middleweight - Sam Webb beat Matthew Hall on SD 12 / 12

Middleweight prospect Billy Joe Saunders was supposed to at least a good workout from southpaw Tony Hill, but before Hill knew what was happening, the fight was over. Saunders landed a left and a rocking right hand after it just moments after the opening bell, and followed that up with a massive flurry of unanswered shots, forcing the referee to step in and end the fight before it ever really even started. - Terry Holmes vs Dean Byrne: Holmes stayed unbeaten with a points win over Ireland’s game but very limited Byrne. Holmes (6-0, 1 KO) put a pretty good beating on Byrne (15-2, 6 KO) in the middle rounds, including a point where Byrne’s corner threw in the towel. The referee threw it back out, because sometimes referees love playing the dramatic hero, which I think is an awful practice. In this case, it led to both corners entering the ring, only for the referee to throw the towel back out. Holmes, celebrating his win, was thus nearly blindsided by Byrne, because with all the confusion of guys running into the ring, the referee left Holmes totally vulnerable. Holmes wound up announced as the winner by a 67-65 score.

The scores were 78-74, 78-74, and 77-75. - In the co-feature, welterweight prospect Wale “Lucky Boy” Omotoso (22-0, 19KOs) stopped Larry Smith (10-10, 7KOs) in the eighth and final round. Heavyweight - Seth Mitchell beat Chazz Witherspoon by TKO 3 / 12 - time: 2:31 - vacant WBO NABO heavyweight title - Jake Hall : NABO Heavyweight Title Bout.

Hopkins - Dawson This rematch was ugly and perhaps disappointing as Hopkins came out wrestling and clinching and also threw in a few head butts. But it was Dawson who appeared to control most of the action with a faster and more accurate pace, However Hopkins, did not agree with the two judges who scored the fight 117-111 for Dawson. The third had it 114-114, “What did he do to win that fight?” Hopkins said. “The only way I knew I would win is if I knocked him out. Let the public judge for themselves.” - Mitchell - Witherspoon An -exciting slugfest that saw both fighters absorbing punishment, 29-year-old Mitchell finally won it in the 3rd, when he connected with two rights into 30-year-old Witherspoon’s jaw, prompting ref Randy Neumann to dive in and stop the fight. Witherspoon started well and landed some big right hands to Mitchell’s jaw in the first round; Mitchell came back in the second with some good body-work; then in the third Mitchell sent Witherspoon down with a left hook and shortly after pounding Chazz around the ring finished him off. The official time was 2-minutes and 31 seconds. Mitchell is now 25-0-1(19). Witherspoon is now 30-3(22).

In the co-main event, Albuquerque welterweight “Hurricane” Hector Munoz (20-7-1, 13 KO’s) forced John Revish (9-6-2, 8 KOs) to quit halfway through the third round.
