Boxing News & Notes From Arizona: 7 July, 2012

By Don Smith - Boxing Fans,

  • Malta Boxing NewsGood Heavyweight boxers are a rare commodity in Arizona. Mike Tyson stayed, trained and played in the Grand Canyon state; but his glory days were over when he moved to Phoenix in 1998 and his residency status was transient at best. Zora Foley, Chandler, Arizona, was a successful “Big” but knockout losses to Liston and Ali stopped him from ever becoming an A list fighter…always a contender; never a champion. 18 year old Dante Stone, Mesa Arizona, is determined to rewrite boxing history and become the first fighter from Arizona to win a World Heavyweight Boxing Title. He was actually born in Omaha, Nebraska but was only there long enough to have his diaper changed a few times…Arizona is home.

Dante stands 6′ 3′ and weighs 265. According to Damien Stone, (father, manager and trainer) his son has approximately 90 amateur bouts under his belt with 85% of them in the win column and about 3/4 of his winning battles were decided before the final bell. Some of Dante Stone’s fights can be seen on You Tube. His boxing plan is to qualify for and win Gold in the 2016 Olympics. Dante knows that winning Gold will be a strong bargain chip when he turns pro. And he will need that golden advantage; so, he can keep his solemn promise to help his father take care of his 16 year old brother (Andreas) who battles Autism every day of his life. Autism is a complex neurodevelopment disorder characterized by social impairments, communication difficulty and abnormal patterns of behaviour. Experts estimate that 3-6 children out of every 1,000 will have ASD and these same experts expect the numbers to continue to grow. . Males are 4 times more likely to be diagnosed with ASD than females.

This Fall, Dante will attend Mesa Community College on a full athletic scholarship. He is expected to compete for a starting position on the MCC varsity football team…size does matter. In the meantime he is preparing for his next boxing exam on Saturday July 14 in Chandler, Arizona where he is 1/2 of the main event. Dante and his unnamed boxing counterpart make up one of 20 bouts to be held at the Stonehard gym in Chandler. The venue seats around 400 and festival seating is available for a very affordable $10.00 per head. Damien Stone, manager and proprietor of the boxing and fitness center, plans 4 more boxing shows before the end of 2012.

Damien boxed while serving in the United States Air Force and eventually he opened his gym and fitness center in Chandler, Stone, a bright guy with a master’s degree in Medical Technology, doesn’t worry about skeptics who warn that he should give up the managing reins, over his son, to a more indecent and experienced professional trainer. Damien sees their bond as a strength and a key ingredient to their winning Olympic Gold and a world championship…..time will tell! Dante is considered a top three tier under 19 amateur heavyweight. 19 Stonehard Boxing Gym is located at 2775 North Arizona Avenue in Chandler Arizona 85225. For more information on the July 14 boxing show…email [email protected] or call Damien or Sean at 480-503 2381. www.stonehardboxing.com Support amateur boxing.

Former IBF/NABF Super Middleweight Champion Jesus “El Matillo” Gonzales is in Las Vegas training for his July 21 Connecticut fight with Elvin Ayala. Gonzales will shed a few pounds and fight as a middleweight. His trainer for the Ayala encounter is none other than Jeff Mayweather. Jesus, a Phoenix, Arizona Native, drove to Las Vegas last week and immediately started getting serious about the business at hand. Mayweather reports his new pupil is better than advertised and his hook and defense will be much improved on July 21. Since his arrival in Vegas, the 27 year old has slowed his tweets and face book activity which could signal a new maturity level Mayweather once told a boxing reporter that the best thing he can do for a fighter is to teach him or her how to protect their physical being. If he is able to teach Gonzales defense and add a big punch to his arsenal…watch out. Gonzales vs. Ayala will not be televised.

2012 Olympics begin on July 27 and women boxers will finally get an opportunity to compete for the first time in Olympic history. . Representing America will be Flyweight Marien Esparza, Lightweight “Queen” Underwoodand middleweight Claressa Shields. Underwood has a legitimate shot to medal and perhaps Shields. The lineup for the American male boxing team includes: Flyweight Rausheed Muhumad, Bantamweight Joseph Pedroza Diaz, Lightweight John Carlos Ramirez, Light Welterweight Jamel William Henry, Welterweight Errol Lee Spence, Middleweight Terrell Maurice Gausha, Light Heavyweight Marcus Browne, Heavyweight Michael Shenter 11 and Super Heavyweight Dominic Angelo Breazeale. 3 best shots at meddling are (fingers crossed) Diaz, Browne and Breazeale. Olympic scoring system makes it harder for Americans to win. Middleweight Andre Ward, 2004, was the last Yank to win gold.

Lightweight Raymund Beltran, Manny Pacqaio’s # 1 sparring partner, takes on tough once beaten Hank Lundy (22-1-1) in a 10 round Espn televised NABF Lightweight title contest on July 27 at the Resorts Hotel in Atlantic City. The popular Beltran (25-6-2) lost his last fight to unbeaten Luis Ramos jr.(20-0) in a unanimous decision that was greeted with more than a few boos. Raymund became very popular with Phoenix boxing fans when he trained at Central Boxing Gym. Emily Pandelakis, his hard working publicist, calls the Beltran/Lundy match up a make or break fight for Beltran. She may be right. Phoenix will be rooting for Beltran to pound Lundy into a Philly Cheese Steak.

Parting Shouts: AZ Golden Gloves CEO Kelly Fenn reports that the recently concluded Junior Golden Gloves Tournament (June 29-30) was a huge success. Special thanks to the Victory Outreach Church for providing a facility and two winks to the “Streets Don’t Love You Back“ non profit organization for sponsoring the event. Results are posted on the official Arizona Golden Gloves website and the Gloves Face Book link up. Winners advance to the July 18-22 Nationals in Mesquite, Nevada…sounds like a road trip for Arizona boxing fans. The Phoenix Boxing Academy, on behalf of their qualifiers, held a car wash in Phoenix on July 7. Boxers Jose Benavidez Jr., Andrew “Hurricane” Hernandez & Gambino Saenz were expected to attend. All three boxers are slated to fight in Vegas on August…details forthcoming. Undefeated Javier Loya, 7-0-6 knockouts, has moved to Busted Knuckle Gym for his training….no word on his next bout but promised soon…UNTIL NEXT TIME!

Training “The Raging Pain”

..

Beverly Talks About The Pain And Self-Strength Required In A Fighter Training At Championship Level

By Beverly Cooper

June 2012

In this corner is the fierce mistress calling out daily for a pound of broken flesh, buckets of sweat and your tears of agony from strained muscles. Coaches cursing, trainers yelling, agents planning, promoters pushing while climbing the never-ending golden blood spattered ladder towards a Title Championship, we have Training “The Raging Pain”.

In this corner craving carbs, water weight, burning muscles, sexless nights and sparring injuries. Long runs going nowhere, party people shouting out but the ‘grind’ has to take precedence. Haters hating, many lonely moments questioning your worth, we have Complaining “The Verbal Purification of Evil”.

I have had lengthy conversations with trainers, coaches and promoters that want to ‘will’ their boxers/fighters to train like champions. Who believe more in their boxers/fighters than they do in themselves. How do you pull out undying determination from your boxers/fighters? How do you translate the true meaning of motivation to a boxer/fighter that gives and takes punches for a living? How, when the trainer, coaches and promotion team are safely on the outside of the ring when the bell tolls? Even if you have been in the ring yourself how do you get in this boxers/fighters head? Trainers, coaches, sparing partners, agents, promotion team - everyone has a job. That is where I come in! I have the behavioral psychology back round to individually and specifically center into each boxers/fighters lack of self-strength. Self-strength is to a boxer/fighter as self-esteem is to a respected commissioned business man. Self-strength is to a boxer/fighter as self-worth is to a super model. Self-strength is to a boxer/fighter as self-awareness is to a Marine in a combat zone. A boxers/fighters self-strength is not just the physical but also those deep, dark and private thoughts that block the way to a Title Championship. Not limited to but including; secret family moments away from the camera’s.

Floyd Mayweather is spending 23 hours a day alone to marinate on his secret family moments. Mayweather requested that he be released from jail 10 days into his sentence because the low-quality food and water have threatened his health. For the next 90 days, so sayth Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa, Floyd Mayweather is going to eat and drink what he is given behind bars in Las Vegas. Prosecutor Lisa Luzaich said, “It’s jail, where did Mayweather think he was going? The Four Seasons? Only 10 days in and Floyd Mayweather is loosing his “Self-strength”! Not limited to but including; the Flying Carpet Syndrome.. Being bigger than life, going where you want to when you want to. Money to spend not to count.

Above and beyond the regular Joe. Manny Pacquiao’s wife, Jinkee, has encouraged an extreme lifestyle change that has seen the boxing champion scrap his well-known late-night partying and gambling habits. Word is Pacquiao wants to improving his public image in the Philippines. Is Jinkee behind all the life changes? Famous for keeping odd hours and often sleeping into the afternoon, Pacquiao has now begun to get out of bed early in the morning, along with his wife, and throwing himself into an assortment of political, social and religious projects. Looks like someone’s self-strength is being squeezed by the balls. Read between the lines !

Professional athletes all require a level of self-strength. In American football, a sport played between two teams of eleven. Players are offense, defense, or special teams, everyone has a job! Teams are allowed unlimited substitutions that are teams may change any number of players after any play. At the start of a soccer match with a full complement for each team, there are two sides of eleven, everyone has a job! When playing hockey there are six on the ice at any one time. Two Defensemen, 2 forwards, 1 center, 1 goalie, everyone has a job! In a typical National Basketball Association regulation game the number of players allowed is five (5) per team, for ten (10) players. You can substitute freely in basketball. Players may be taken out of a game and then put back into a game. There is no limit to the amount of times a player can be taken out and put into a game. Except when ’fouls’ are involved. Everyone has a job! In baseball there are nine players on the field… There are three outfielders, three basemen, a shortstop, a pitcher and a catcher. You can substitute but there will always be nine on each team. Everyone has a job! I know you can see where I am going with this… In Boxing/MMA it is you and your opponent. Face to face, toe to toe, no more practice it is the real deal. No other ‘teammates’ to pick up the slack. No other ‘teammates’ to defer to when the going gets rough. No other ‘teammates’ to lean on when that TKO is being broadcast from the ring referee.

These are Warrior sports without a doubt. Boxing and MMA are the closest any of us will get to the old world Roman days of the Gladiator. Gladiator games provided their sponsors with extravagantly expensive but effective opportunities for self-promotion while offering cheap, exciting entertainment to their clients. Gladiators became big business for trainers and owners, for politicians on the make and those who had reached the top. Gladiator - Boxer - Same - Same ?

Heavyweight Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell says; “The only thing I really miss (about football) is the team camaraderie. Boxing is a lonely sport.” Seth was a star linebacker at Michigan State before knee injuries ended his career. Seth took up boxing in 2006. To date Seth’s record stands at; 25 win (19 KO) 0 lost 1 draw. Last fight was against veteran boxer Chazz Witherspoon April 28, 2012. Seth took Chazz down twice in the third round of a scheduled twelve round fight to obtain the vacant WBO NABO Heavyweight Title. Again Congratulations Seth! That belt looks good on you!

When you need Self-Strength; with quickness get to your boxing gym !
When you can’t lift your eyes to yearn for the future; escape in boxing !
When you don’t feel the suns heat on your face glazed in tears; reach for your gloves !
When the haters hate; take a long run, feel your core strength and remember YOU ARE an Alpha Male !

Boxing News & Updates – 21st June

Boxing News & Updates – 21st June – For: Vázquez Jr & Marquez Conference, WBO welterweight champion, 28-year-old Timothy Bradley, Manny Pacquiao says he wants a rematch, Russian Cruiserweight Grigory Drozd, Wladimir Klitschko, David Haye and Dereck Chisora

Vázquez Jr & Marquez Conference - Former world champions Wilfredo Vázquez Jr. (21-2-1, 18 KOs) and Rafael Marquez (41-7, 37 KOs) were face to face today at a press conference for their August 4 pay-per-view clash billed as “The War, Puerto Rico vs Mexico” at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.- Rafael Marquez: I had been training for a month and a half and I come to Puerto Rico for a war. Puerto Ricans know who I am and know that I come to fight. - Wilfredo Vazquez Jr: “I know you and I’m training for a big fight. I don’t underestimate you for your age as a lot of people do. I had two ways to continue my career. The long way to make two or three fights and then go for a title or fight against Marquez, a veteran or the short way. I choose the short way and I am going to fight Marquez.”

WBO welterweight champion, 28-year-old Timothy Bradley once again responded to criticism that he has not fairly won his fight with 33-year-old Filipino Manny Pacquiao. According to Bradley, Manny is not the same boxer and has shown decline and in a possible re-match he will be easily defeated, because he now knows how to fight against the Filipino. Bradley also said in an interview with mydesert.com, that Pacquiao’s best years are already behind. “He [Pacquiao] is getting worse - he said. - The truth is that his skills are declining. He shook me very seriously in the fourth round, but could not finish the fight. Former Manny would have knocked me. I think he’s worn out. I saw this at a press conference and thought that this guy is seriously tired. He even had bags under his eyes. ” (Photo by AP)

Manny Pacquiao says he wants a rematch with Timothy Bradley after a five-judge panel assembled by the WBO championship committee unanimously favored the Filipino fighter in a video review. Pacquiao said Thursday he would prefer a rematch rather than Bradley giving up the WBO welterweight title that he won on a split decision because “people may think I just usurped it.” The five judges on the review panel all scored the fight in Pacquiao’s favor — 117-111, 117-111, 118-110, 116-112 and 115-113. At the June 9 bout in Las Vegas, judge Jerry Roth had it 115-113 for Pacquiao, and Duane Ford and C.J. Ross had it for Bradley by the same score. Pacquiao’s return date has been set aside for November 10th, likely at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He arrives in Los Angeles on Sunday and plans to meet with his promoter, Top Rank’s Bob Arum, next week to discuss his November fight and the possible options on the table.

Today the 20th June in Moscow, Russian Cruiserweight (up to 90.7 kg) Grigory Drozd took a premature victory over Brazilian Fabio Garrido in the 39th second of the very first round. Drozd immediately had Garrido on the ropes. Followed by a series of precise punching, after which the Brazilian corner threw in the towel, refusing to continue the fight.

IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko says he looks forward to his fight against Tony Thompson, Which is scheduled for July 7. The American is a former sparring partner and opponent of Vladimir. Their ring encounter in 2008, ended in defeat for Thompson by KO in the 11th round.

Both David Haye and Dereck Chisora are now officially “Licensed to Thrill” at West Ham United on July 14th. Haye was presented with his Luxembourg Boxing Federation license in Luxembourg earlier today from the General Secretary of the LBF, Tony Tiberi. “We are proud to grant a great fighter like David Haye a boxing licence and he showed his appreciation by coming out here today to talk to the media and rub shoulders with his fans, who requested many autographs. David was charming and FLB has no doubt that his fight with Dereck Chisora will be a credit to boxing,” said Tiberi. Last month Chisora was handed his license and now both boxers are ready to fight in out in one of the biggest grudge fights in British boxing history.

AIBA World Boxing Academy

By AIBA

With the grand opening of the AIBA World Academy expected for September 2013, AIBA and the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation are pleased to announce that the project is right on schedule. The revolution in grassroots development, that will see boxers from all over the world use the state of the art facilities in the beautiful setting of the Soldatskoye Valley, at the footsteps of the mountains near Almaty, is moving at great pace.

The Soldatkoe Valley, situated at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level, is an extremely popular training and conditioning destination for athletes from Kazakhstan and its neighbouring countries. This idyllic setting and perfect location are some one of the principle reasons why the AIBA World Academy will soon be welcoming a whole new generation of champions there.

The area already holds National training facilities for ice-skating and athletics, as well as a Mountain Ski resort, outdoor facilities for horseback riding with stables, and a Golf course will soon be opened there too.

Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, AIBA President, who recently visited the Academy site and was impressed with the progress of the construction, said, “I am very happy with the progress being made and I am glad that the facilities will be fitted with the most modern technologies during its construction. This is very important”.

The construction contractors were selected and hired following a fare bidding process and the high-level of competition has guaranteed first class building quality. Despite complicated conditions with the Academy situated in a mountainous region, AIBA assures that the buildings will be more than able to sustain any weather as well as any seismic activity. The terrain is undulated and varies by 22 metres in height with an ablation depth of 8 meters. They had to reinforce the soil due to possible seismic activity and the foundations of the Academy are now resistant to any shifts as required by World Standards. Pure spring water will be sourced from underground. The water was tested and recognised as clean and of high quality.

The boxers, coaches and other visitors using the facilities will feel very comfortable, even during the cold Kazakhstan winters, with the AIBA Academy being installed with a highly advanced water heating system with its own boiler station. For the first two years, the Academy will use diesel fuel before switching to gas in early 2015, lowering energy costs.

By December 2012, the building structure will be in place so that during that winter the work on the internal decorations, electric cabling, sanitary-ware installations, floor covering and wall papers can go ahead. In May 2013, the finishing touches will be made with the final landscape work around the grounds (loaning, planting, constructing access roads, etc).

All will be in place for the big unveiling in September 2013 when Kazakhstan hosts the AIBA World Boxing Championships. AIBA will then invite all National Federations, AIBA Family Members and Kazakhstan’s highest officials to witness the opening ceremony of this high-tech, state of the art boxing training and education facility.

Former Champ Williams Ready For July 7th Title Showdown With Conquest

GOODWIN MAIN EVENTS

LEON ‘SOLID’ WILLIAMS Vs. TONY ‘CONQUEROR’ CONQUEST

Southern Area Cruiserweight Championship

7th July 2012 @ York Hall, London

Former Champ Williams Ready For July 7th Title Showdown With Conquest

By Rio

London - June 2012

After three false starts, the long awaited showdown, between former British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams and Southern Area Champ Tony ‘Conqueror’ Conquest, is finally set to take place, on the Olivia Goodwin promoted ‘One More Round’ event at York Hall on Saturday 7th July.

The last time this highly anticipated Clash of the Titans was due to take place was back in January, as Williams’ first defense of his British Crown, however Conquest was forced to withdraw due to a viral infection.

With Conquest out Williams instead defended against Nottingham’s Shane McPhilbin.

For eleven rounds Williams totally dominated the proceedings, including sending McPhilbin to the canvas twice. However after just thirty seconds of the final round things took a dramatic turn, for the worse, after McPhilbin landed a powerful clubbing shot, to the back of the defending Champ’s head, which ultimately lead to the fight being stopped and a new British Champion crowned.

With no quick rematch with McPhilbin, or a shot at current British Champ Enzo Maccarinelli on the horizon, the only way Williams could get back into the Championship mix this year would be to challenge his good friend Conquest.

A situation that wasn’t lost on the former Champ, as he made clear when he spoke briefly, following a training session at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, earlier. “Yeah it’s a stepping stone, I know I gave up the Southern Area title before I beat Rob Norton and became British Champ, but it does lead to bigger and better things.

God willing, I’ll get the chance to get my Lonsdale belt back after beating Tony on the 7th.

No make that Johnny willing, Johnny, my manager Johnny Eames, will do the business side for me, I’ve just got to win.

Preparation has been very good, sparring has been the best. I’m Dereck Chisora’s main sparring partner, so that’s good experience and I learn from it all the time.

This is really going to help me with the fight. Dereck’s a very big, strong guy and after all this work Tony will feel like a lightweight in comparison - Thank you Dereck Chisora.

I’m not trashing Tony, he’s a good friend of mine and a very good boxer, but there’s no friendship when you step in the ring, you fight, and that’s what we’re going to do - fight.

Team Solid is back…and climbing the ladder to the top. Team Solid all day, every Day…Yeah.”

Leon ‘Solid’ Williams versus Tony ‘Conqueror’ Conquest for the Southern Area Cruiserweight title co-headlines Olivia Goodwin’s ‘One More Round’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 7th July 2012.

Tickets, priced £60 (Ringside) and £35 (Standard Seated), for Leon Williams vs. Tony Conquest are available on-line now at www.tkoboxoffice.com - tickets are also be available direct from Leon Williams or the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA.
