Johnson is replacing Mikkel Kessler who dropped out of the tournament because of an injury. In an article at the Las Vegas Review Journal, Johnson says “My first reaction [to getting picked to fight in the Super Six tournament] was, ‘Wow, what a great opportunity. This is, I think, the best tournament in boxing. When the possibility to be a part of it came up, I immediately started doing what I need to do to get down to the weight. I haven’t done 168 in like 10 years, so I just have to commit myself and go to work.”
The winner of this epic clash – will earn a spot in the Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinals. In an article by John Martinez at Box Score News, Margarito says “I’ve seen other guys hit him [Pacquiao] and give him pressure, but then they don’t continue their attack. I am going to go nonstop. If I see he’s hurt, and I’m not going to stop until he’s on the floor. The way he fights, he is open to uppercuts. He’s going to be eating mine and when he does, he won’t want to come inside.”
Kessler Could Retire
Kessler Will Retire if The Eye Injury Continues
WBA / WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (43-2, 32 KO’s) is still having problems with his injured right eye. Kessler, 31, dropped out of the Super Six tournament recently due to his complaints of not being able to see well out of his right eye, which he injured in his first Super Six tournament bout a year ago against American Andre Ward in November 2009. In an article at Spn.dk, Kessler says “It is still the same. There is no improvement yet. I don’t spare. I do not train hard. I am not in doubt that it will be better. The only question is, when it will be.”
Kessler’s recovery could take as long as nine months, according to his doctors.
Kessler will not take any chances with his vision. If the eye clears up, but then returns in either training camp, or his comeback fight, the popular Dane will retire from boxing to avoid any permanent injury to his vision.
“People always say to me ‘what if you get hit and it starts up again? What if you go blind? Is it worth it?’ No, it is not,” Kessler says.
The WBC made him the “Champion Emeritus.” Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham will fight for (his) the vacant WBC title on November 27 in Helsinki, Finland. The status of “Champion Emeritus” allows Kessler to get an immediate title shot at the winner.
