Audley Harrison faces BBBoC today

Heavyweight Audley Harrison is expected to find out today whether the British Boxing Board of Control will withhold any of his reported £1.5million purse following his passive effort against WBA heavyweight champion David Haye in November. Harrison will appear before the board to explain non-performance in the one-sided bout.

The nature of Audley Harrison’s third round KO defeat to WBA heavyweight title-holder David Haye will be examined by the BBBoC later today. The board will decide if Harrison, should be paid in full for his night’s work or punished for not putting up enough of a fight. Audley is said to have earned £1.5 million for the contest.

Harrison, for whatever reason, decided not to throw any punches for the three rounds of the fight other than one jab. Why Harrison failed to throw one meaningful punch is the big mystery.

The BBBoC have the power to withhold a percentage of Harrison’s purse should they decide that he did not put enough effort into the fight. Harrison, though, claims that his strategy was to take Haye past the mid-rounds before putting his own tactical battle plan into action.

This match was one of the oddest heavyweight title fights in memory, as not only did Harrison not throw punches, but Haye did little as well until the 3rd. Both fighters looked petrified and very weary of each other. Finally, Haye landed a right hand that stunned Harrison in the 3rd. Haye then let loose with a stream of shots that had Harrison staggering around. The fight was then quickly stopped before Harrison could get really hurt. Harrison has complained that the referee had jumped the gun in stopping the fight to early and did not give him a chance to apply his strategy of going after Haye in the later rounds of the fight.

Docking part of the prize money for Harrison is not really going to achieve anything and further more it should be considered that both boxers were pitiful to watch. Perhaps the BBB should have considered docking the pay of both boxers as in reality they both failed to deliver.

  • Alex Leapai vs Darnel Wilson — Australian-based Samoan heavyweight Alex Leapai (20-3-3, 16 KOs) hopes to keep his win streak going against American heavyweights when he clashes with Darnel Wilson (23-9-3, 20 KOs) over ten rounds at the Gold Coast Convention Center, Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia on Saturday.

.

  • Johnny Muller having his first fight at light heavyweight took out Ronnie Lategan in 1 minute 49 seconds of the first round to capture the vacant SA title at Emperors Palace, Kempton Park on Tuesday night. The 20-year-old Muller (77.95kg) came out at the first bell throwing punches and never allowed Lategan (78.05kg) to get into the fight. With Lategan backing off and Muller’s non stop lefts and rights to Lategan’s head as he battered him all over the ring the corner threw in the towel for referee Wally Snowball to wave the fight off.

.

  • Pacquiao’s next fight on April 16th — Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has already reserved the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, for Manny Pacquiao’s next fight on April 16th in 2011. Arum is looking to put a fight together between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. and has reportedly contacted promoter Don King in hopes of arranging a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao.

.

  • Audley Harrison to go on — In a press release sent out yesterday, 39-year-old Audley Harrison (27-5, 20 KO’s) said that he plans on continuing his disappointing career despite being stopped in three rounds in his last fight against WBA heavyweight champion David Haye on November 13th. — Harrison thinks the fight was stopped too soon, saying “I got caught by a good set of punches to go down. I give David credit as I never expected him to hurt me as he did, but anyone could see it was a premature stoppage and I should have been allowed to carry on and ride out the rough patch, even if that meant I would have got KO’d.”

.

  • Victor Ortiz vs. Lamont Peterson — Light welterweight contender Victor Ortiz (28-2-1, 22 KO’s) has an important bout against Lamont Peterson (28-1, 14 KO’s) on the undercard of the Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana fight on December 11th at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ortiz, 23, needs to win this fight and look good for him to stay in the running for the prospects of facing Khan, Maidana, Bradley or Alexander in the future.

Harrison Decides to Soldier On

A STATEMENT FROM AUDLEY HARRISON

“After spending some time away reflecting on the fight and outcome, I have made the decision to continue my journey in boxing and carry on my career as a professional. The David Haye experience had many highs away from the ring and I’m happy I had a great training camp and worked with two of my brothers again in camp. I surrounded myself with a world class team and pushed myself to the limit in training and left my changing room knowing I had given my all to get to this point.

“The outcry from the fight is expected as I didn’t get the result I wanted and the critics have once again tried to bury me under the rubble and hope I disappear. All I can say is I had a game plan and went into the ring to win. The way the fight ended was frustrating to me as I didn’t get going and was just settling into my rhythm.

“Both styles of feinting and moving was off-setting the both of us in the first two rounds and I was just zoning in on his rhythm when he got through.

“I’ll never be crash – bang – wallop and I’m glad about that; my style is unique but can run into problems like all styles can and I got caught by a good set of punches to go down. I give David credit as I never expected him to hurt me as he did, but anyone could see it was a premature stoppage and I should have been allowed to carry on and ride out the rough patch, even if that meant I would have got KO’d.

“I think the Vitali Klitschko beating of Shannon Briggs a few weeks earlier and the public outcry made the referee jump in early and I was denied the opportunity to show my grit, determination and desire to be in there and compete and try to get back on level terms.

“Let the haters and negative comments continue – I don’t really care. I know me and I can sleep at night as I’m happy with who I am today. Yes it hurts not to achieve your goals, but we roll up our sleeves and we try again; such is the beauty of life.”

Audley Harrison Statement

Audley Harrison statement
“I make no excuses”

To my family, my team and the fans who got behind me on this journey to overthrow David Haye and become Heavyweight champion, I’m sorry I was unable to walk through the door and fulfil my destiny. I can promise I cut no corners in training and did all I could do in getting myself ready both physically and mentally for Saturday’s fight. Ultimately, I didn’t get going and my game plan to take over the fight in the later rounds was extinguished by the power and speed of David Haye who caught me clean around my guard.

“If I wanted an easy way out, I would have stayed down from the knockdown, but I rose and the referee’s intervention saved me from a potentially bad knockout as David is a good finisher, but I would have gladly left the ring on a stretcher as I wanted to work my way through it.

“I make no excuses and I’m not sure where I go from here in boxing, but I’ll lick my wounds, take some time out with my family and see what I want to do”.

“From Prizefighter, to the European Title and overcoming a career ending injury and surgery, I am happy to have made my way back to this point. Yes I am defeated and upset about the outcome on Saturday, but my journey in life has been one of triumph and the ‘yes I can’ slogan goes onwards and upwards”.

“To David Haye, I’m grateful for the opportunity to fight for the World Title and I’m glad we buried the bad blood between us. I wish you well in your attempts to unify the titles and you have my support”.

Latest Boxing News – Monday 15th November for: Audley Harrison, David Haye, Ruslan Chagaev, Klitschko Brothers, Manny Pacquiao, Antonio Margarito, Amir Khan, Marcos Maidana, Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, Paul “The Punisher” Williams, GB Boxing Olympic squad,Freddie Roach, Mayweather

  • British heavyweight Audley Harrison is facing the possibility of loseing his £1million purse for Saturday’s three round TKO loss to WBA heavyweight champion David Haye. The British Boxing Board of Control is investigating Audley’s performance, which saw him throw three punches in three rounds. They are very upset with the level of performance and how the fight played out. BBBC secretary Robert Smith said: “Withholding some or all of Audley Harrison’s purse is something which we will have to sit down and consider, bearing in mind it was such a letdown for the 22,000 people at the MEN Arena and the thousands watching at home. — “We’ve withheld purses in the past on many occasions when we feel a fighter has not tried. Myself and the BBBC chairman Charles Giles will watch the fight again then make a decision, but we have the authority to rescind purses and we would not be afraid to use that. Audley Harrison has not been paid yet, so it is something we can do”.

.

  • Chagaev ready for Haye — Yesterday Universum heavyweight Ruslan Chagaev (26-1-1, 17 KOs) watched the “Battle of Britain” between WBA champion David Haye and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Audley Harrison on TV. Chagaev, the WBA mandatory challenger, is the next opponent for Haye who won by third round TKO. “I am totally disappointed by this performance,” commented Chagaev. “This fight was not at world championship level. Harrison didn’t do anything. In three rounds I saw three jabs. That’s it. And this was in a world championship fight. Haye only waited for the first two rounds, if he had started earlier, everyone could have gone to bed. I was as disappointed as the 22,000 spectators in the arena”.

.

  • Haye is now being targeted by the Klitschko brothers for a bout next year. Bernd Bonte, the manager for the Klitschkos, is hoping Haye will agree to fight one of the Klitschko brothers next, possibly in Wembly Stadium. — In an article at cityam.com, Bonte said “We would be more than happy to make that fight. We already had a signed agreement [speaking about Haye’s previous agreement to fight Wladimir last year] but he [Haye] bailed out.” — Bonte continued saying “We want everything in one pot, with a 50-50 split. We would like to do the fight, but as long as we have a 50-50 split. We want the biggest money in the pot. If it comes from a sold out Wembly then we will go there.”

.

  • Pacquiao dominates Margarito — Super welterweight Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs) added another chapter to his legendary career on Saturday night (13 Nov) before a huge crowd at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas. Pacquiao won a world title in a record eighth weight class (WBC junior middleweight) with a brutal twelve round beating of Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs).

.

  • Pacquiao-Margarito draws only 41,734: for last Saturday’s fight at the Cowboys Stadium — which is 10,000 less than Pacquiao’s fight against the obscure fighter Joshua Clottey last March.

.

  • Khan vs. Maidana: — WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) will finally be put to the test with a fighter when he faces the biggest puncher in the light welterweight division in WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s) on December 11th at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. For the last two years Khan has not taken on fighters renowned for their punching power.

.

  • Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez Vs Paul “The Punisher” Williams — Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KOs) arrived at the Philadelphia airport earlier this afternoon to make his way to Atlantic City for his upcoming battle on Saturday, November 20th that is set to take place at the Boardwalk Hall. Martinez, who is the reigning WBC middleweight champion, will defend his title against Paul “The Punisher” Williams (39-1, 27 KO) in a rematch of their December 5, 2023 slugfest which had both fighters knocked down in round one and Williams winning by majority decision after twelve action-packed back-and-forth rounds.

.

  • BOXERS from the GB Boxing Olympic squad won every category in this weekend’s (12/13 November 2010) first ever GB Amateur Boxing Championship at the Echo Arena Liverpool. — The competition, which pitted the best amateurs from England, Scotland and Wales against GB Boxing’s first choice boxers, saw nine victories for Great Britain and two for England. All eleven of the winners are members of GB Boxing’s Podium or Development squads. - “This has been an excellent weekend of boxing and a very good test for the men and women on the GB boxing programme,” said GB Boxing’s Performance Director, Rob McCracken. “There have been some excellent performances in the competition and it will certainly have an influence on the evolution of the Olympic programme next year as we build up to 2012.”

.

  • Freddie Roach Says to Mayweather step up or leave the country — Roach thinks the times has come for Mayweather to step up to the plate. He says Mayweather needs to take the fight or leave the country, because the boxing public in the United States would never forgive him if the fight doesn’t happen. - “Let’s face it. Manny’s way above him at this point because I remember when he (Mayweather) was ducking Margarito and he wouldn’t fight him either. If he doesn’t fight Manny now, we know this guy should retire,” Roach said.

.

  • Manny Pacquiao vs Antonio Margarito Post Fight Interview — The fight with Margarito was one-sided and brutal, but Pacquiao admits that a bodyshot in the sixth hurt him badly and he was lucky to make it to the seventh round. Margarito, known for his hard hooks to the body, was able to catch him to the ribs but Pacquiao was very elusive and wouldn’t allow him to follow-up.
