Now Quigg Is Top Of The Class
SCOTT QUIGG was expelled from school so he could continue his education in a boxing ring.
Now he is closing in on world title glory leaving his former teachers wearing Dunces caps.
The British super-bantamweight champion was 15-years-old when he was allowed to leave Bury’s Elton High School after pleading to be kicked out.
Quigg, 23, who defends his title against Welshman Jamie Arthur at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium tomorrow night (4th Feb) said: “I always turned up for school because I didn’t want my mum to get into trouble.
“When it came to subjects like science and maths I wasn’t the brightest kid. School didn’t interest me.
“I was getting into trouble so I talked it over with my mum and said I wanted them to chuck me out.
“They called a meeting for us to go in and discuss my problems. They laughed at my way of solving the solution because nobody had ever asked to be expelled.
“The deputy head, Miss Needham said; ‘What are you going to be, and achieve in life with no education?’
“I told the teachers I wouldn’t tell them because they would all laugh. When they pressed me I replied; ‘I am going to be a world champion boxer’.
“They then warned of what my life would be like if I failed, but my determination and vision was strong even then.
“They ended up expelling me, but putting me on a course where I went to college once a week. I am proving them wrong.”
After being bombed with no qualifications, dad Kenneth made his son get a lowly paid job sweeping a factory floor.
Quigg added: “It gave him a motto that has remained etched ever since, ‘Train hard and you will never have to work in a factory’.”
Since turning professional shortly after his 18th birthday Quigg has steamed to 23 consecutive wins and is now ranked third in the world by the IBF and WBA.
He is an early favourite to be voted Britain’s Young Boxer of the Year in October and behind him is the financial muscle of Hatton Promotions.
The Joe Gallagher trained prospect knows he cannot overlook former Commonwealth champion Arthur who is in the last chance saloon.
He said: “There is no danger of taking my eyes away from Arthur. If I cannot beat him it will be a struggle to reach the level I believe I can.
“Whoever has been in with Jamie knows they have been in a fight. There is no quit in him.
“I know how hungry I was to win the British title when the Jason Booth chance came and I am sure Jamie will have stepped up another gear in training.
“I have been in that position and I think it is harder keeping titles than winning them.”
Also in action tomorrow is former Commonwealth and European super-bantamweight champion Rendall Munroe who boxes Argentinian Jose Saez in a non-title eight rounder.
The bill will also include Stephen Foster Jr v Yauheni Kruhlik, Joe Murray v Jose Luis Graterol, Craig Lyon v Yuri Voronin, Jazza Dickens v Barrington Brown, Feargal McCrory v Sid Razak and Tasif Khan v Delroy Spencer.
Boxing starts at 6.15pm and tickets priced at £35, £55 and £75 VIP ringside. You can buy by calling 01925 755 222, Ticketmaster 0844 847 2500, Ticketline 0844 888 9991 or onlinewww.hattonboxing.com
Its Official Mayweather vs Cotto: May 5
It’s official. Boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather will return to the ring, step up in weight and challenge three-division World Champion Miguel Cotto for his WBA Super Welterweight World title. Mayweather vs. Cotto will take place on Saturday, May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. and will be televised live on pay-per-view.
Mayweather, a seven-time world champion in five weight classes, will be facing the heavier, much-tested Cotto, who is the pride of Puerto Rico and has the experience, heart and determination to give pound for pound king Mayweather the toughest fight of his career.
“Miguel Cotto is a world class fighter who can never be taken for granted and continues to prove he is one of the best in boxing,” said Mayweather, whose only other fight at super welterweight came in a World Boxing Council (WBC) world title win over Oscar de la Hoya in May 2007. “It will be a challenge for me to compete with him at this weight, but this is the type of test I thrive on and gives me the motivation to train even harder. I have no doubt in my mind that my title belt collection will increase once again and Cotto’s reign as champion will come to an end on May 5.”
Cotto, coming off of the second defense of his title, a spectacular tenth-round technical knockout win over Antonio Margarito in December 2011, is ready to face Mayweather and believes he is Mayweather’s most competitive career challenge to date.
The deal between Mayweather (42-0, 26 KOs) and Cotto does not come as surprise. With a much-anticipated fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao off the table at least until the fall, Mayweather-Cotto is widely considered the next biggest fight he could take. Junior middleweight titlist Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was also considered a leading candidate to face Mayweather.
Mayweather-Cotto also means that Pacquiao, who intends to fight June 9, will not be facing Cotto in a rematch. Pacquiao-Cotto II was one of the potential fights Pacquiao and his promoter, Bob Arum, had discussed. The leading candidate to face Pacquiao in June is junior welterweight titlist Timothy Bradley Jr.

Boxing News And Updates In Brief For Friday 13th January, 2012 For: Hot Ticket Sales For Brook vs Hatton, NSAC Revokes Casamayor’s Boxing License, Mayweather Only Wants Pacquiao, Arum Wants To Deal Directly With Mayweather, Brandon Gonzales Replaced, Adamek Says Rematch With Arreola Possible, WBA Orders Rematch Between Khan And Peterson, Burns Defends Title Against Moses, Negron Returns, Bukom Banku Returns, Salido-Lopez Rematch
- Hot Ticket Sales For Brook vs Hatton - Less than three days into the sale of Kell Brook’s fight with Matthew Hatton at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on March 17 and the ticket sales have smashed through the 5,000 barrier. Promoter Eddie Hearn announced the huge all-British Welterweight clash between Brook and Hatton on Wednesday afternoon and the phone lines at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield and at Matchroom Sport have been buzzing ever since with fans snapping up tickets for the event. The Arena was set up for 9,000 fans but after the huge demand for tickets, it is likely that Hearn will open up the full capacity at some point next week.
- NSAC Revokes Casamayor’s Boxing License - The Nevada Athletic Commission has revoked the boxing license of former world champion Joel Casamayor after he tested positive for marijuana following his KO8 loss to Timothy Bradley last November. The 40-year-old Casamayor must pay a fine of $10,000 and may not request a new Nevada license for 12 months.
- Mayweather Only Wants Pacquiao - WBC welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he’s only targeting Manny Pacquiao right now and nobody else. In an interview at fighthype.com, Mayweather states that he doesn’t want Saul Alvarez, Miguel Cotto or a rematch against Juan Manuel Marquez. - Mayweather says he only wants Pacquiao and is wondering why the Filipino star is ducking him so badly. Mayweather also said his management are probably looking someone else for him to fight on May 5th, but he still prefers the Pacquiao fight.
- Arum Wants To Deal Directly With Mayweather - “Right now there’s no development,” Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum told the Philippine Star in Manila. “Obviously we’re waiting to hear from the Mayweather people, but we’re prepared to do the fight in May. It will be late in May, but the problem remains the same in that no one from Mayweather’s side would guarantee his purse. I can only guarantee Manny’s purse, but if Floyd wants to make a deal with me then I’m open to that. I can guarantee his purse but I then I will have a share in his revenue.” Arum also told the paper that he needs to discuss an alternate opponent if the Mayweather fight doesn’t happen. - Meanwhile Pacquiao has stated the fight is no problem “as long as it’s a 50/50 split,” and both Arum and chief adviser Mike Koncz have ruled out the 17,000-seat MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, insisting on a special 40,000-seat temporary arena. - On the Mayweather front, Golden Boy has reportedly eliminated Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero from consideration as a possible Floyd opponent, should the Pacman fight not happen.
- Brandon Gonzales Replaced - Tom Brown, Goossen Tutor Promotions matchmaker, has added a special 8-round super featherweight attraction between two undefeated prospects Guy Robb (7-0, 3 KOs) and Joel Diaz Jr. (6-0, 5 KOs) after Brandon Gonzales pulled out of his January 20 fight against Caleb Truax due to a leg injury. The card, which will be held at the Pearl at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nev. and broadcast on SHOWTIME, is headlined by a world title bout between WBA super bantamweight world champion Rico Ramos (20-0, 11 KOs), who takes on WBA interim champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux (8-0, 6 KOs). Opening the ShoBox telecast, undefeated Matthew Villanueva (6-0-1, 6 KOs) will fight Mike Ruiz (8-1-1, 3 KOs) in an 8-round junior bantamweight bout.
- Adamek Says Rematch With Arreola Possible - In an interview with the Polish Times, Former two division world champion Tomasz Adamek (44-2, 28KOs) said he is not ruling out a rematch with Chris Arreola (34-2, 29KOs). Adamek won a twelve round majority decision over Arreola in April 2010. It was one of the more exciting heavyweight encounters in the last few years. Adamek plans to return in March, but then he wants to land a televised opportunity on HBO. If the network requests a rematch with Arreola, Adamek is ready to fight.
- WBA Orders Rematch Between Khan And Peterson - The World Boxing Association has decided to order an immediate rematch between Khan and the current IBFWBA light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO’s). This comes after Khan was beaten by Peterson on December 10th by a 12 round split decision in a fight where Khan was docked two points for pushing off. Khan and his promoters from Golden Boy filed an expensive appeal after the fight, pointing to the point deductions, which they felt was needless and scoring problems and the presence of the mystery man, Mustafa Ameen, who was seen sitting and talking with WBA supervisor Michael Welsh during the fight. Ameen should not have been permitted to sit with Welsh during the fight, says Golden Boy.
- Burns Defends Title Against Moses - WBO interim lightweight champion Ricky Burns will make his first defense of his belt against former WBA champion Paulus Moses on March 10 at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow, Scotland. Burns, who became Scotland’s first two-weight world champion in twenty years when he sensationally defeated Michael Katsidis last year, makes the first defence of the title on home soil after a year on the road.
- Negron Returns - Carlos Negron (13-1 and 9KOs) will reprise his career in 2012 by returning to the cruiserweight division, where the fighter hopes become world champion while promising to train in the United States in order to secure better sparring. Negron, standing at 6’6, admits that despite his height, his physique is not the traditional full-span of a heavyweight, which leaves him at a disadvantage against the ‘mastodons’ weighing 240 pounds onwards. “I felt like I was inflated. I will return on February 3 at a function in San Sebastian (Puerto Rico) at 200 pounds. In addition, there are plans to train in U.S. for sparring and to further develop myself as a boxer.
- Bukom Banku Returns - World Boxing Organization (WBO) African boxer of the year Braimah Kamoko AKA Bukom Banku makes a return to the ring on February 25 when he makes a defence of his WBO Africa Light heavyweight belt against Kenyan Hamza Wandera in Accra. Victory for the unbeaten Kamoko, 22-0, 16 KOs will move him closer to a fight against world champion Nathan Cleverly later in the year. Banku’s fight is the headliner of the first promotion of the year in Ghana put up by Golden Mike Boxing Promotions led by CEO Mike Tetteh slated for the plush Accra International Conference Centre.
- Salido-Lopez Rematch - The rematch between World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion Orlando Salido (37-11-2, 25 KO’s) and Juan Manuel Lopez (31-1, 28 KO’s) will be taking place on March 10th at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This will be another home fight for the 28-year-old Lopez despite the fact that he was badly beaten and stopped in the 8th round last time he fought the 31-year-old Salido last year in April 2011.
Chambers Hopes To Add To Philly History
Eddie Chambers Hopes To Add To Philly Heavyweight History
Philadelphia, PA - When Eddie Chambers, of Philadelphia, PA, boxes Sergei Liakhovich, of Scottsdale, AZ, in the 10-round main event on Saturday evening, Jan. 21, at the Asylum Arena, he will take another step on the journey he hopes will lead him to the heavyweight championship of the world.
Chambers, 29, who moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh as a young pro in 2002, already has boxed for the IBF version of the crown. Although he was stopped in the 12th round by Wladimir Klitschko in 2010 in Germany, he now knows what he must do to get back there and win.
In the long history of Philadelphia boxing, few have challenged for boxing’s richest prize. Despite its reputation as a great boxing town, only two men, Sonny Liston (below) and Joe Frazier, lived in Philadelphia when they won the world heavyweight title. Terrible Tim Witherspoon twice earned pieces (WBC, WBA) of the crown in the 1980s.
Liston lived here when he dispatched Floyd Patterson in one round in 1962 at Chicago’s Comiskey Park to become Philadelphia’s first world heavyweight champion.
Six years later, Frazier (below), originally from Beaufort, SC, knocked out Buster Mathis in Madison Square Garden to gain recognition as world champion. He won the undisputed belt in 1970 against Jimmy Ellis then cemented his heavyweight legacy by outpointing the comebacking Muhammad Ali over 15 rounds in 1971.
There have been other outstanding Philadelphia heavyweights, including Tommy Loughran, considered by many to be the greatest fighter ever from Philadelphia, Al Ettore, Leroy Haynes, Dan Bucceroni, Leotis Martin and Jimmy Young.
While Philadelphia world heavyweight champions are rare, the city has hosted two of the most important heavyweight championship fights of all-time on the same date and in the same ring, 26 years apart.
On Sept. 23, 1926, Jack Dempsey lost his crown to Gene Tunney via 10-round decision in a steady downpour in front of 120,757 fans at what was then known as Sesquicentennial Stadium in South Philadelphia. On the same date in 1952, in what many claim was the greatest heavyweight title fight ever, Rocky Marciano came from behind to knock out Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th round at the same venue, then known as Municipal Stadium.
It’s a long, glorious history Chambers is following and the fight with Liakhovich is the next step.
A pro since 2000, Chambers is 36-2, 19 KO’s. Liakhovich, 35, of Scottsdale, AZ, is 25-4, 16 KO’s, and he held the WBO version of the title for seven months in 2004. The winner will have something to say in the world heavyweight picture in 2012.

- Pongsaklek Wonjongkam - made the fourth successful defense of his second tour as lineal flyweight champion in unspectacular fashion, as a clash of heads barely 45 seconds into his bout with Hirofumi Mukai of Japan resulted in a technical draw on Thursday afternoon (local time) in Bangkok, Thailand. The butt came about when Wonjongkam was leaning in to throw a left hand while Mukai was crouching down in a defensive posture. Time was immediately called as blood began to stream into his eye. The ringside physicians gave the Japanese novice a long hard look before declaring that the cut was too severe to allow the bout to continue.

The WBU and WBF super bantamweight titles were up for grabs. This is Graf’s second contest in Australia. She was born Alesia Klimovich in Gomel, Belarus in 1980 and held the Global Boxing Union super flyweight title from 2006 to 2008.

The winner of that fight faces British champion Tyson Fury sometime in 2012.
- Mayweather gets 90 days in jail - Multiple news outlets have reported that Floyd Mayweather Jr. pleaded guilty to reduced misdemeanor charges that will settle his felony charges. The plea deal avoided him the trial on felony allegations that he battered his former girlfriend during an argument in September 2010. He is to report on January 6 at 10:45AM to begin serving his sentence. Floyd must also attend a 12-month domestic violence program, pay $2500 in fines and perform 100 hours of community service. The full sentence is for six months, of which three months are suspended and he was given credit for three days served. Floyd’s attorney asked if the court would consider a home detention program. “Not in lieu of the 90 days,” Judge Saragosa responded. “I have considered it, yes, absolutely, and I have decided that the time he will spend in custody is appropriate.
- Pavlik faces Friday arraignment on three charges - Former middleweight boxing champion Kelly Pavlik faces arraignment Friday morning in Canfield Area Court on charges of OVI, failure to control and leaving the scene of an accident. He spent a brief time in the Mahoning County jail on the three misdemeanor charges after being arrested Wednesday night at his Sugarbush Drive home in Canfield. Police say Pavlik, 29, and a friend wrecked two ATVs on a neighboring piece of property, destroying a lamp post and causing other damage. Reports say Pavlik smelled of alcohol and was belligerent to deputy sheriffs investigating the accident.
- Klitschko vs Chisora - WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO’s) will be dealing with the best pressure fighter he’s faced in many years when he defends his title against the hard hitting Dereck Chisora (15-2, 9 KO’s) on February 18th at the Olympiahalle in Munich, Germany.
- Golota’s Return Complicated - Heavyweight Andrew Golota (41-8-1, 33 KOs) is no longer certain when his ring return is going to take place. The boxer was scheduled to return in December, and then it was pushed back to early 2012, and then back to December. The 43-year-old fighter stepped away from the ring in 2009 after suffering a beating in a five round TKO loss to countryman Tomasz Adamek. “At the moment my plans are a little blurred. A few things imposed on each other and, therefore, my return to the ring is a little complicated,” Golota said.
