MUNROE WARNS QUIGG: I’LL FINISH THE JOB
MUNROE WARNS QUIGG: I’LL FINISH THE JOB
RENDALL MUNROE is desperate to get to grips with Scott Quigg in next month’s vacant interim WBA super-bantamweight title clash.
The pair meet again at Manchester Arena in one of several big undercard fights when Ricky Hatton (45-2) makes his return against Vyacheslav Senchenko (32-1) on Saturday November 24.
Their first meeting in June ended prematurely in a third round technical draw because of a horrific cut to Rendall’s right eye.
Such an inconclusive ending was a disappointment to both warriors and the Leicester southpaw (24-2-1) warned British champion Quigg (24-0-1) said: “I will finish what I started.
“Everything is going good and I am already fit. I am going to go out there and do what needs to be done.
“Scott will turn around and say he was going to knock me out last time and all that rubbish. Fair play to him for having those dreams.
“We were only two and a half rounds into the fight and I was confident I was going to do what I wanted. I hadn’t even started getting going.
“I live clean and healthy so that helped the cut heal up quickly. I have been in full training for more than four weeks now.
“It is good that so many people will see the fight on a big card, because it will show I am still hungry and climbing the ladder.”
Although Ricky’s return has grabbed global headlines, his show features the best of British on a magnificent undercard.
Sergey Rabchenko (21-0) defends his European light-middleweight crown against Frenchman Cedric Vitu (35-1), Martin Murray (24-0-1) will feature in a major contest and Gary Buckland (26-2) risks his British super-featherweight title against local idol Stephen Foster Jr (30-3-1).
Also in action are Hatton Promotions hopefuls James Dickens (12-0), Adam Etches (9-0) and Scott Jenkins (6-0).
All tickets are sold out and broadcast details will be announced shortly.
Murray Sets His Sights On Geale
MARTIN MURRAY believes another world title crack is overdue
and he’s setting his sights on unified WBA and IBF champion Daniel Geale
The unbeaten St Helens middleweight held Felix Sturm to a draw in Germany last December and has been playing a waiting game ever since.
Clashes with WBC champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr and WBO titlist Dmitry Pirog have both fallen through, but Murray is confident that his luck may change now that Geale has dethroned Sturm.
In fact, Murray was ringside to watch their fight in Oberhausen and made his case to Geale personally afterwards.
“I spoke to Daniel Geale at the post-fight press conference and told him that I’m available to fight him either in England or in Australia,” the 29-year-old explained.
“He said we’ll definitely be able to sit down and talk.
“To be honest, his team seemed more keen for him to come over here because I don’t think he gets the recognition he deserves in Australia and he’s proven that he travels well.”
If a shot at Geale can materialise, it will end months of frustration for Murray.
Visa issues put paid to his world title hopes against Chavez Jr, while boxers closer to home have been unwilling to step up to the plate.
“I proved against Sturm I belong at world level, but getting a draw was one of the worst things to happen to me,” Murray said.
“If I’d have won everyone would have wanted to fight me because I’d be a world champion and if I’d have got smashed they’d have wanted to fight because they’d think I’d be an easy night’s work.
“Proving myself has left me in no man’s land so I think a world title is well overdue now.”
Promoter Ricky Hatton added: “We’re having to look at big fights with overseas names for Martin because he’s a feared man in Britain.
“We’ve beaten all offers for a fight with Darren Barker but had no joy and we met all Matthew Macklin’s demands only for him to go elsewhere.”
Rabchenko Faces French Test
HATTON PROMOTIONS ACE RABCHENKO FACES FRENCH TEST
SERGEY RABCHENKO will make the first defence of his European light-middleweight title against Cedric ‘Titi’ Vitu.
The French southpaw, 27, is the mandatory challenger for the unbeaten Belarussian’s crown and the match has been ordered by the EBU.
Vitu has won 35 of his 36 professional contests, with his only loss a majority points defeat against Hamlet Petrosyan back in May 2008.
Since then he has won 17 consecutive bouts and beaten good men like Christophe Canclaux.
Rabchenko’s manager Philippe Fondu, who is also Hatton Promotions European representative said: “This will be an excellent contest between two very good boxers.
“Vitu is a credible challenger and will give Rabchenko an even bigger test than Ryan Rhodes who he beat to win the title.
“Like Rhodes, Vitu is also a southpaw so fighting another leftie will not be a problem for Rabchenko.”
Rabchenko, 26, who has won 16 of his 21 fights inside the distance will start preparing for his big challenge later this month when he returns to Manchester and begins working with trainer Ricky Hatton.
Hatton Promotions and the EBU hope to announce the date of Rabchenko v Vitu in the coming weeks.
