‘Rola El-Halabi’ Shot Down

Friday night’s boxing card at “digibet Pferdesportpark Berlin-Karlshorst“ promoted by ARENA Sports-Promotion and Prime Time Events & Entertainment almost ended in tragedy. Former WIBF and WIBA lightweight champion Rola El-Halabi was shot down by her stepfather and former manager in the dressing room while preparing for an IBF championship bout which should have been the last fight on the night.

El-Halabi and two members of the local security staff were hit and injured by bullets before police could end the shooting and arrest the assassin. The incident happened after eight of the scheduled ten fights had already been finished.

Our Colleague Andrew Millwall, from our sister site, World Wide Boxing Predications League, was on the scene just outside the dressing rooms, in comments to Malta Boxing News, Andrew said: amidst all the panic and confusion Eva Rolle (promoter) did her very best to keep things calm and dealt with everything in a professional manner, until the police intervened, after the arrival of the police everyone was cleared out and security stopped anyone returning including members of the press. At this time we have no reports or information on the condition of Rola El-Halabi or the security guards involved in the incidents.

Benjamin Simon Ready for Anyone

Submitted by Andrew Millwall

28th February 2011

No boxing weight class is more firmly in the grips of German hands than the Middleweight division, with the World champions Felix Sturm (WBA), Sebastian Sylvester (IBF) and Sebastian Zbik (WBC Interim Champion). On 1st April a fourth German will be fighting to put himself in pole position to challenge for those Titles.

The 28 year-old Berliner, Benjamin ‘Iron Ben’ Simon (20-1-19 ko’s) faces Australian Sam Soliman in an IBF World title eliminator at the Digibet Pferdesportpark,Berlin. A win against the experienced Aussie would propel “Iron Ben” to No. 2 in the IBF World rankings and would bring the possibility of an all German duel with Sebastian Sylvester a step closer.

“ My goal is for a World Title fight this year “ says a confident Benjamin Simon, “I don’t really care whether it is against Sylvester or one of the other World champions. An all German battle is always very popular with the boxing fans. Therefore I will make every effort to defeat Sam and become the mandatory challenger for the IBF. If however Felix Sturm the WBA Champion decides he wants to fight me, then I am ready to take him or anyone on.”

Before Simon can think about which Title he may get a shot at, he has to dispose of 37-year-old “King” Soliman (39-11-17 ko’s) a pro since 1997 from Melbourne, Australia who has fought many top boxers including Anthony Mundine, Sakio Bika and Ronald ‘Winky’ Wright.
Robert Rolle, coach and manager of Simon said “ there’s no doubt that Soliman has been in with some of the world’s best and this will certainly be the toughest fight in Benny’s career, but when your target is to be a World Champion, you have to get in with the best en route to a Title shot. We are preparing in the best possible way ahead of this difficult fight. If Benny reproduces the form he has shown in training he will most certainly overcome Soliman.”
The World Title eliminator is just one of the highlights of this fantastic card being held jointly by Arena Sports Promotion and Prime Time Event & Entertainment.
Other fights on the card will include two women’s World Title fights featuring Jennifer Retzke’s (Light Middleweight) second attempt to secure a World crown against Eva Halasi and Rola El Halarbi (Lightweight) looking to add another title to her haul with victory against Irma Baligajic Adler.

The undefeated Heavyweight Yakup Saglam and Michael Wallisch will be competing for the German International Title. In addition, Varol Vekiloglu fights Mohammed Rasuli for the IBF east/west European Light Heavyweight Title.
Also on the card will be exciting unbeaten Heavyweight Erkan Teper, and the return of Alexander Petkovic against Raymond ‘King Kong’ Ochieng, following his highly controversial draw against Timo Hoffmann in October last year.

“Overall, we will give the audience a first-class fight evening with many exciting duels”, promises ARENA-CEO Ahmet Öner and PRIME-TIME supremo Eva Rolle. “The theme for this show sported ringside will be ‘ Back to Boxing ‘ . Bringing high quality boxing to the fans and we are sure that everyone will have an evening to remember
Tickets are still available through the League or Eva Rolle.
