Olympic Boxing: Chemistry Cup Halle13/3
By AIBA
March 6 - 2012
On the 13th March, the doors to the 39th edition of the Chemistry Cup will open. This is the next significant event before the Olympic qualifiers and will be held in Halle, Germany. The world’s top boxing nations will be taking part in this exciting gathering.
The organisers are expecting 111 athletes from 19 nations to compete at the tournament and these nations make up four of the AIBA Confederations. The participating nations will be the host nation Germany, Algeria, Austria, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Netherlands, Romania, Russia and Uzbekistan.
There are no less than seven AIBA World Champions on the entry list of the Chemistry Cup, giving the local fans a unique opportunity to see world class fights in Halle.
One of these great athletes is Mongolia’s Olympic Games silver medallist, Purevdorj Serdamba, who secured the gold medal at the 2009 AIBA World Championships in Milan. However, following that success, his form was not sufficient to win any further contests until he competed in the last edition of the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Baku. Here, Serdamba achieved the bronze medal as well as a quota place for the London Olympic Games 2012.
Another formidable star, China’s Beijing Olympic Games winner and three-time AIBA World Champion, Zou Shiming will compete in the flyweight division in Halle. His main opponent will be Russia’s current AIBA World Champion, Misha Aloyan. Uzbekistan’s Jasurbek Latipov, Germany’s Ronny Beblik and Mongolia’s Tugstsogt Nyambayar are also some of the incredible medal bearers from the AIBA World Championships.
Everton Lopes claimed the gold medal in the light welterweight class in Baku and made boxing history for Brazil. The 24-year-old South American boxer will have another chance to prove his skills and talent in Halle, but can expect to come up against some tough opponents, such as Mongolia’s AIBA World Championship bronze medallist, veteran Uranchimeg Munkherdene as well as Lithuania’s Youth Olympic Games winner, 20-year-old Evaldas Petrauskas.
Kazakhstan’s Serik Sapiyev attained an impressive four medals in the recent history of AIBA World Championships, among them two glorious golds. The potential clash between the Kazakh team captain and Russia’s top welterweight boxer, AIBA World Championships silver medallist, Andrey Zamkovoy is one of the most anticipated fights of the tournament.
Russia’s particularly hard-hitting duo, Egor Mekhontsev and Artur Beterbiyev, both had excellent performances at the 2009 AIBA World Championships in Milan, where both boxers were adorned with medals. Following this accomplishment, both changed weight divisions and the upcoming tournament in Halle will certainly showcase the pair as strong gold medal contenders. It will also be an excellent opportunity to check out where they stand in their run-up to the Olympics.
Mongolia’s reigning Olympic Champion and former AIBA World Championship silver medallist, Enkhbat Badar-Uugan will return to the Chemistry Cup after a long recovery from injuries. Nonetheless, there is an undoubted likelihood that he will be able to reach the gold medal in the bantamweight class, where Germany’s European Champion, Denis Makarov, will be his major adversary.
Fighting for survival and for a chance at defending their thrones in Halle will be five titleholders, of which four represent Germany. We will witness Youth Olympic Games winner, 19-year-old Artur Bril, Patrick Wojcicki, Stefan Haertel as well as Kevin Kuenzel strutting their stuff on the canvas this March. Other top contenders to look out for at this year’s Chemistry Cup are Russia’s European Championship silver medallist, Dmitriy Polyanskiy and Ireland’s super talented light heavyweight boxer, current European Champion and AIBA Youth World Champion, Joseph Ward. It will be an exciting yet thorny contest, an event where we will be witness to some phenomenal boxing treats in the lead up to the London Games.

Wladimir Klitschko Demolishes Mormeck
KO Number 50 For Wladimir
In a spectacular show at the ESPRIT arena in Düsseldorf, Germany, “Dr. Steel Hammer” Wladimir Klitschko kept his promise and rewarded his fans with a half century of KO’s at 1 minute and 12 seconds of round four against Jean-Marc Mormeck.
Klitschko (57-3, 50KOs) demolished former cruiserweight king Jean Marc Mormeck (36-5, 22KOs) in four one-sided rounds to retain the WBA/IBO/IBF/WBO heavyweight titles.
In an obvious mis-match and predictable result, Mormeck came out bobbing and weaving and trying to get inside but failed to land a single punch.
In the second round, a big right put Mormeck down. In the fourth round, Wladimir landed a combination that put Mormeck down. He made it up on the very edge of the count and the referee waved it off.
After the fight Wladimir Klitschko had praise for Mormeck saying that he was a fighter with heart but avoided a direct answer when asked about the criticism, suggesting a mismatch between the two fighters. Regarding future challengers Wladimir said; that he had a great respect for the upcoming young boxers, such as Price and Fury who would be replacing the ageing generation of boxers. Wladimir was also quick to point out that he did not consider himself as old, as he was also the younger of the Klitschko’s.
Vitali Klitschko, did not quite confirm earlier reports from David Haye, via his Twitter account, claiming that Vitali had agreed to accept him as a challenger. However he also did not dispute the possibility.

Hernandez vs Cunningham On BoxNation 4-2-2024
HERNANDEZ v CUNNINGHAM IBF WORLD CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWDOWN ADDED TO BOXNATION SCHEDULE
On February 4th, BoxNation (Sky Ch. 456/Virgin Ch. 546), the UK’s only dedicated boxing channel, continues its commitment to bring subscribers the very best in Championship boxing from all around the world, by showcasing Yoan Pablo Hernandez’s first defence of his newly won IBF Cruiserweight championship against Steve Cunningham, live and exclusive from the Fraport Arena in Germany.
Former Cuban amateur star Hernandez (25-1) captured his title by defeating former champion Cunningham (24-3) back in September with a 6th round technical decision. The decision came in controversial fashion, with Hernandez being given the nod after he could not continue because of a cut he received from a Cunningham head-butt. Many observers felt that the cut was not serious enough to warrant a stoppage, and that it came just as the American was beginning to gain the ascendancy after suffering a first round knockdown.
Needless to say the controversial nature of the result has left a huge amount of unfinished business that needs to be resolved when the two meet again on February 4th.
BoxNation will also be showing the action packed undercard live from the Fraport Arena. Chief support sees Sebian, Enad Licina (21-3) meet Russian Alexander Alexeev (22-2) for the vacant European Cruiserweight Title, whilst up and coming German Light Heavyweight, Eduard Gutnecht (22-1) defends his European Title against Vyacheslav Uzelkov (25-1).
The action just keeps coming on BoxNation in 2012. This will be the SIXTH world title fight added to in the first quarter schedule for the UK’s new home of televised boxing. The 2012 world championship action begins this Saturday, 14th January, when Russian born German, Robert Stieglitz defends his WBO World Super-Middleweight title against unbeaten German Henry Weber in Germany. Then on the 20th January, Derry Mathews takes on Emiliano Marsili for the vacant IBO Lightweight Championship live from Liverpool. Then on the 18th February, it’s the big one, as heavyweight king, Vitali Klitchsko takes on Londoner Dereck Chisora for the WBC World Heavyweight Title live from Munich.
The following weekend BoxNation goes live from Cardiff for the homecoming of their WBO World Light Heavyweight Champion Nathan Cleverly, who takes on American Tommy Karpency. Then for 10th March BoxNation is up to Glasgow, as Ricky Burns defends his Interim WBO World Lightweight title.
With more action to be added, it’s sure to be a huge couple of months for the UK’s only dedicated boxing channel.
For just £10 per month BoxNation offers unbeatable value for money for all fight fans. To subscribe to BoxNation simply go to www.boxnation.tv and hit the “Subscribe Now” button and choose your subscription package. Simple!
