The experienced Francois Botha overcame Flo Simba who was stopped at 2 minutes 50 seconds into the sixth round. There was little in it for the first two rounds as both fighters were missing badly and throwing wild punches. However, from round four the 21-year Simba (98.40kg) began finding his target catching the 42-year-old Botha (119.30kg) with some stunning rights to the head and Botha went back to his corner with a bruised right eye. However experience favored youth as the crafty veteran set up Samba for a straight right hand late in round 6 after a succession of shots to the head that sent Samba stumbling against the ropes and he was on rubbery legs when referee Thabo Spam pool stepped in and waved the fight off. - In a lackluster encounter Tommy Oosthuizen, 23, retained his IBO super-middleweight belt for the first time when he beat 35-year-old William Gare on points over 12 rounds. - In an outstanding performance Chris van Heerden (66.20kg) outpointed Bongani Mwelase (66.00kg) in their IBO welterweight title eliminator. The two southpaws fought toe-to-toe for most of the bout with Mwelase coming into the ring dry and lacking his usual sharpness. Judge Lulama Mtya (SA) had it 116-113 whilst judges Ace Makaluza (SA) and Steven Weisfeld (USA) scored it 116-113 and 115-113.

“Son of the Legend” Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (43-0-1, 30 KOs) won a twelve round majority decision over WBC middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik (30-1, 10 KOs). Zbik was much busier and more accurate while Chavez landed the more damaging blows and did some good bodywork to thrill the pro-Chavez crowd. Zbik landed many flush shots to Chavez’ head. Scores were 115-113, 116-112, 114-114. After the bout Chavez Jr. said he won the title for Mexico. -In an upset, Dakota Stone (10-8, 2KO) was the winner by sixth round TKO victory over the legendary Christy Martin (49-6-3, 32 KO). According to reports, it was a great fight with both women trading haymakers. Martin was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards, having dropped Stone in the fourth, when in the sixth round she reacted badly after landing a right. Martin had injured the hand in the fourth, and the ringside physician stopped the match in the sixth after she indicated that she was in tremendous pain. It turned out that Martin’s right hand was broken. It seems a shame that someone who fought for her life through much more severe injuries was robbed of a victory in this manner.

In a difficult fight, Nottingham, UK’s WBC Super Middleweight Champion Carl “The Cobra” Froch (28-1, 20 KOs) successfully defended his title and advanced to the Final of the inaugural Super Six World Boxing Classic against Andre Ward with a majority 12-round decision over Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson (51-15-2, 35 KOs). Japanese judge Nobuaki Uratani scored it 114-114, but was over-ruled by judges John Stewart (117-111) and Mark Green (116-112). - Light heavyweights: Zsolt Erdei (33-0, 18 KO’s) defeated Byron Mitchell by TKO in R 6 (28-8-1, 21 KO’s). Erdei, the former light heavyweight and cruiserweight titleholder, made easy work of Mitchell, a faded former super middleweight titleholder. Erdei hurt Mitchell at the end of the first and dropped him twice with hard rights in the sixth. After rising a second time, referee Eddie Cotton was unsatisfied after asking Mitchell a series of questions in the corner and elected to call the fight off. Time of the stoppage was 1:58
