Ireland’s Niven Looking For Fourth Straight Win

By Bernard O’Neill

John Joe Nevin will be looking to record his fourth win in a row as the World Series of Boxing enters the second half of its 12-match season across the Americas, Asia and Europe this weekend.

The Cavan bantamweight, a bronze medal winner at the 2009 AIBA World Championships in Milan, is available for selection for his Paris United against Milan, nicknamed Milano Thunder, in Paris on Friday night.

Nevin is presently in pole position in the WSB Team Championships bantamweight rankings having won all three of his matches so far to help lift his side to the top of the table in the WSB European group.

The top two ranked boxers from the five WSB Team Championships weight categories, bantamweight, lightweight, middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight, will qualify for the WSB Team Individual Championships which has five Olympic places available.

If Nevin, the youngest member of the Irish 2008 Olympic squad in Beijing at 18, makes it to WSB Individual Championships then he will have to win just one fight to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games.

WSB Individual Championships fights will be contested over seven, three minute rounds, as opposed to five, three minute rounds in the WSB Team Championships.

Nevin’s Paris United team-mate Nordine Ouballi, meanwhile, is lying in second spot in the WSB bantamweight rankings, raising the possibility that they both could qualify for the WSB Individual Championships and end up trading leather for a place at the 30th Olympiad.

Nevin, who has beaten Olympic bronze medalist Vincenzo Picardi (Milan), Selcuk Eker (Istanbul) and Vitaliy Volkov (Milan) so far, could meet Vittorio Parrinello - who he beat 11-3 when Ireland beat Italy at the National Stadium in Dublin last March - as United seeks to increase their lead at the top of the table on Friday.

“After this win (over Picardi) I knew I was on the right track. I started well and I felt more confident. It feels great, but it is only half season. I am glad to be on top but I know there is 6 weeks of competition left,” said Nevin.

Meanwhile, Milano Thunder new signings Eamon O’Kane and Tommy McCarthy will also be available for selection for Friday’s crucial clash in the French capital. Milan go into the match three points adrift of United.

Elsewhere in the WSB European group, Istanbul new-signing David Oliver Joyce will line out for the Turk’s versus bottom-of-the-table Moscow at home this Friday evening. Istanbul are lying in third spot in the table, eight points behind Paris United.

In the WSB Americas, Ken Egan’s and John Joe Joyce’s Miami Gallos side are facing a crucial away clash against top-of-the-table Los Angeles on Thursday night. LA beat Miami 4-1 less than two weeks ago, a results that saw Miami drop to third place in the table, one point behind second place Mexico City Guerreros, who will fancy their chances of beating struggling Memphis Force on Thursday.

If Miami fail to win in California - or at least pick up a losing bonus point - then then they will drift ten points behind LA with just five matches remaining.

The three groups winners plus the best runner up in the Americas, Asian and European groups qualify for the WSB Team Championships semi-finals.

Azerbaijani side Baku Fires are top of the table in the Asian group.

All six Irish boxers are due to return home from their respective WSB sides at the end of this month ahead of the 2011 Irish Senior Championships at the National Stadium.

Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder Undefeated at Home in Week 5

The Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder got the new year off to a great start with a home win at the Palasharp tonight to move to the top of the European conference table. The Italian team stormed ahead to a 3 - 0 score against the Istanbulls. The challenge looked easier than it actually was and the defeat of Nikolays Grisunins stopped the march to the 5 - 0 final score. Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder won the match 4 - 1 putting in the team at the top of the European conference before Saturday’s match between Kremlin Bears and Paris United.

  • In the first bout Vincenzo Picardi showed his will to win after being defeated in his debut match against Paris United. He beat the young Turkish boxer Selcuk Eker and brought the Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder team 1 to 0 over the Istanbulls. “I had to get used to the new rules of this competition,” Picardi said, “and to the 5 rounds. In the first match I wasn’t feeling as good as I do now but I’m ready to fight in Paris January 28th”.

Final score: 3-0

50-44; 50-44; 50-44

.

  • In the second match Vazgen Safaryants had his revenge on Shafiq Chitou, who defeated the Milano Thunder’s boxer in Istanbul on November 26th. In tonight’s match Safaryants was more aggressive and the referee counted down on Chitou in the second and fourth rounds.

Final score: 3-0

50-43; 50-43; 49-44

.

  • For the middleweight category Sergiy Derevyanchenko of Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder jumps on the ring and took another step closer to the individual title. Tonight Derevyanchenko reached his third consecutive victory, after the tecnical knock-out against Paris United and the good match against Ustaranhov in Moscow. The 19-year-old boxer Omar Faruk Polat, debuting tonight in WSB, was not able to face his rival and also took standing eight counts in the third and fourth rounds.

Final score: 3-0

49-44; 50-43; 50-44

.

  • Nikolays Grisunins returned to the ring after being badly injuried in Moscow during his last match, against Usmanov. Grisunins won the first round against the Istanbulls boxeur Enrico Kolling from Germany, who seemed to gain strength in the second and third rounds and finally won the match.

Final score: 0-3

47-48; 46-49; 47-48

.

  • In the last match the two giants Mohammed Arjaoui, 107.3 kilos, and Benjey Gilton Zimmerman, 124.8 kg, fought on Palasharp’s ring. The Istanbulls boxer was stronger than his rival in the first rounds, but Zimmerman showed his best at the end of the match and gave another victory to the team trained by the coach Francesco Damiani.

Final score: 3-0

48-47; 48-47; 50-45

Beijing Dragons Suffered a 0-5 Home Drubbing from Astana Arlans

  • WSB Results - Saturday, 18 December 2023 - Macau, Macau — BeijingDragons Suffer 0-5 Home Drubbing from Astana Arlans -Things got off to an exciting start at the Venetian Hotel in Macao today with a tense bantamweight opener in which the scores were tied going into the final round. The visitors’ Bagdad Alimbekov was judged the winner of the final round by two of the judges and therefore took the victory on a split decision 47-48, 48-47, 48-47. (Photo: Lui, left, v Sarsekbayev - Photo Credit WSB)

Alimbekov’s opponent explained the close defeat: “The opponent was a last minute substitute but sometimes things like that happen in boxing. I will learn that for my future matches.” — With the match already won, the Beijing Dragons’ two African internationals, light heavyweight Assane Faye and heavyweight Awusone Yekeni, were unable to salvage the valuable point offered by a 3:2 loss.

  • Azerbaijani team Baku Fires continues to lead the Asian conference and extends its unbeaten series in WSB after defeating the Incheon Red Wings at the “Serhedchi” Olympic Sports Center on Saturday on a 4:1 final score. Last week the Fires overcame the Red Wings in their home match with the same score. At the moment Baku Fires is the only team in all conferences that did not lose a match. — The evening started with the bantamweight bout between Rahim Najafov from Baku Fires and Lukasz Adam Maszczyk from Incheon Red Wings. During the first three rounds both boxers showed almost equal performance with Najafov taking a slight edge. After the knockdown of Maszczyk in the fourth round it became very clear that Fires boxer was dominating the contest. In the last round Najafov only strengthened his position and took a victory on a unanimous decision (50:45, 50:45, 50:45).

  • WSB Results - Friday, 17 December 2023 - France, Paris — ParisUnited Beat Istanbulls 4-1 at Home - As in the first home contest, Nordine Oubaali had to open the score for Paris United, which he did very well, improving his record in the World Series of Boxing to 2-0. The battle was bound to be hard for his opponent, Turkey’s Abdullah Dursun of the Istanbulls.

It is always important to score the first point in a contest of that size. Nordine Oubaali clearly understood it as he won his second fight in a row in the World Series of Boxing. France’s contestant entered this bout with extreme motivation, probably thanks to the support he enjoyed during the whole fight. He was very aggressive as soon as the opening bell rang, throwing a series of crosses and jabs right to Turkey’s Abdullah Dursun’s face. Oubaali never gave his opponent a chance.

  • The Mexico City Guerreros found comfort at home once again Friday to break a two-match skid and earn a decisive 4-1 victory Friday over the visiting Miami Gallos to close out action in Week 4 of the World Series of Boxing in the Americas conference. — Action at the Centro Banamex resembled that of the Guerreros’ opening night when they trounced the Memphis Force, 5-0, to begin the season. But since then, the Guerreros had not fared so well on the road dropping contests to the Los Angeles Matadors, 5-0, and to the Miami Gallos last week, 3-2. — With the Guerreros returning two winning fighters to center stage for the first time since their season debut along with a 2008 Olympian competing for the first time, the Guerreros would have the upper hand on paper going in and would back that up with their action in the ring throughout the night as well.

WSB Debuts This Weekend In Three Continents

World-class Boxers in the Mix for the First WSB Matches Worldwide

WSB Report: November 2010 - Switzerland, Lausanne.

The World Series of Boxing debuts this weekend with six matches being held across three continents. The Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder team has the honor of hosting the first-ever match this Friday evening against Paris United at the Palasharp on the outskirts of Milan. The Mexico City Guerreros will welcome Memphis Force hours later in the first match of the Americas conference. On Saturday, Moscow’s Kremlin bears host the Istanbulls at the Barvikha Luxury village and the first two matches in the Asia conference will take place, with the Astana Arlans taking on the Incheon Red Wings at home and the Beijing Dragons travelling to Azerbaijan to face the Baku Fires.

Milan has made a strong opening gambit, announcing a team that includes two Olympic medalists and a world champion - all of them Italian: Vincenzo Picardi (bantamweight), Domenico Valentino (lightweight) and Clemente Russo (heavyweight). Head coach Francesco Damiani has added two of his international contingent into the mix: Sergiy Derevyanchenko of the Ukraine and Nikolajs Grisunins of Latvia, who will be competing at middleweight (73kg) and light heavyweight (85kg) respectively.

Moscow’s Kremlin Bears take on the Istanbulls at the Barvikha Luxury Village on Saturday evening. The Moscow squad is the perfect WSB mix of experience and new talent, with heavyweight Arbi Madaev, silver medalist at the 2009 European Youth Championships and light heavyweight Zhavlonbek Usmanov, bronze medalist at the 2006 World Junior Championships 2006, joined by three young Russian boxers looking to make their international debut with the World Series of Boxing.

In the first WSB match in the Americas conference, the Mexico City Guerreros will welcome the Memphis Force to the World Trade Center for their first home match on Friday evening. Head coach Francisco Bonilla has chosen a young squad for the first encounter, but one in which the boxers nevertheless hold three medals from this year’s American Continental Championships between them. The second match in the Americas conference takes place next Tuesday, meaning that under WSB rules the Miami Gallos and Los Angeles Matadors have until Friday night to name their five-man selections for their encounter at the American Airlines Arena.

Ghana’s Maxwell Amponsah is destined for fame in Kazakhstan. After winning over the home crowd at the WSB Exhibition Match against the Istanbulls last month, the 24-year-old light heavyweight has been selected for the team’s first home match in the Asia Conference on Saturday against the Incheon Red Wings. While Amponsah is the only African competing in this weekend’s matches, Dongsik Seo is the only Korean in the Incheon side chosen for the opening match. Competing at bantamweight, he will be joined by an Uzbek, Bahodirjon Sultonov, at lightweight, two Moldovans, Victor Cotiujanschii and Mihael Muntean, at middleweight and heavyweight respectively, and Kiwi Reece Papuni, a quarter-finalist at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi, at light heavyweight as the Incheon Red Wings pool their international talent.

The second match in the Asia conference sees the Beijing Dragons travel to Azerbaijan, where they will take on the Baku Fires at the Sarhadchi Olympic Center on Saturday evening. The home team’s line-up includes the Ukraine’s Denys Poyatsyka, bronze medalist at this year’s European Championships, as its mandatory international boxer, as well as two newly naturalized Azeri citizens. Middleweight Soltan Migitinov and heavyweight Magomedrasul Medzhidov have both competed for Russia, Medzhiov taking the gold medal at the 11th Umakhanov Memorial tournament in Makhachkala, Russia, last year.

The Beijing team is putting a firm emphasis on young talent, with the oldest member of its squad only 23 years old. Unfortunately, due to visa issues the team has been unable to field an international boxer and will therefore forfeit one bout under WSB rule 2.1.5, which requires at least one international boxer to compete for a team at each match.

WSB Boxing Results - Kazakhstan Victories

WSB – Results: Kazakhstan’s Astana Arlans overran their opposition the Turkish Istanbulls at the inauguration of the first exhibition test match between two teams from the WSB franchises. The event was held in occasion of the AIBA congress which is being held in Kazakhstan.

The home side put on a spectacular boxing display at the Almaty Sports Palace this evening, dominating all five of the weight categories to secure a 5-0 victory in the first-ever World Series of Boxing bout.

WSB Report: Sunday, 31 October 2023 - Kazakhstan, Almaty.

Opening the proceedings with a short speech, AIBA President C. K. Wu said that “the World Series of Boxing is a key element in AIBA’s vision for the future development of boxing. It will help boxers with their careers; it will provide a return on investment for the national federations who nurture its boxers; but most importantly it will change the perception of boxing.”

After Bagad Alimbekov took the opening victory in the 54kg bantamweight category, Yerzhan Mussafirov buoyed the Astana Arlans team even further with a technical knock-out against Mehmet Topçakan of the Istanbulls in the second round of the 61kg lightweight contest. Topçakan picked up two standing counts in the round, which requires the referee to stop the contest under the WSB competition rules.

“The first round was quite tough because I didn’t know my opponent,” Mussafirov said. But after the second round it started to get easier. In the second round he [Topçakan] seemed more tired and more open for me.”

The 73kg middleweight division saw a return to the ring for Kazakhstan’s Olympic Champion Bakhyt Sarsekbayev, who cruised to an easy victory over the Istanbulls’ team captain Onur Şipal. Sarsekbayev had little time for covering defence and seemed at ease in the ring.

“In a few years’ time, I think this is going to be a massive tournament,” Sipal said. “I was fighting against a champion and I will never forget this moment because I have written a piece of history. It was difficult to move up from 64kg and October was a very busy month for me with eight matches, including the World University Championships in Mongolia and the national championships in Turkey.”

Ghana’s Maxwell Amponsah enjoyed the vociferous backing of the home crowd as he put in a stylish performance to dismiss Onder Ozgül. Amponsah seems to have adapted well to life in Kazakhstan and even had a few Russian words ready for the local journalists.

“I’m happy that I won,” he said. “My opponent came here to fight and came at me with hard punches. I need more training because I’m hoping to win my fights. I’m not hoping to knock my opponents out, but I do need to train harder.”

In the fifth and final bout of the evening in the 91+kg heavyweight division, Serbian heavyweight Milutin Stankovic rounded off the strong start for the home team with a unanimous decision from the judges.
