Malta’s Micallef Defeats Scotland’s Steel
Malta’s first professional boxer Daniel “The Spider” Micallef (w4 -KO 1 - lost 3) has just convincingly won his seventh professional boxing match by unanimous decision against Chris Steel at the Miners Welfare Club, Cleland, Scotland, UK, on the 9th of December.
Daniel is presently Malta’s one and only true professional, licensed boxer, training full time and striving to advance in the sport, he is the younger sibling of local boxing promoter Edwin Micallef and is managed in Scotland by Paul Graham of ‘Prospect Boxing’.
By outpointing undefeated Chris Steel 60-54 over 6 rounds. Daniel is now ranked 474 in the world, number one in Malta and equivalent to 47th in the Brittish ranks with Craig Windsor Jnr just above him in the ratings.
Daniel Micallef vs. Chris Steel
The first fight on the night saw Scots based Maltese, Daniel Micallef (3-3) take on Motherwell’s Chris Steel (3-1) over six-twos. Starting the fight strongly and always coming forward, Micallef looked to make use of the fact the Steel was the notably taller fighter. As the fight continued Micallef went on to land clearly and showed good command of the ring. At the end of round six, the referee lifted the Maltese fighter’s hand after scoring it 60-54.
Iain Butcher vs. Darren Pryce
This was the second show of the season for the Scottish based promoters (Prospect Boxing). Motherwell’s Iain Butcher, in his second appearance as a professional looked to make quick work of Newport’s Darren Pryce. Starting well, Pryce was out boxed for the rest of the fight and was also warned by ref Kenny Pringle in the second for low blows. Showing good technique mixed with a tight defence throughout the fight, Butcher went on to claim his second victory by 40-36.
Kris Hughes vs. Michael Harvey
And in the third and final fight of the night Kris Hughes moved to 15-1 with a point’s victory over Michael Harvey in the super-bantamweight division. Making a strong start, Hughes seemed to build on his previous points victory over Youssef Al Hamidi, with blistering body shots and never seemed to let Harvey get into the fight. After four-threes, referee Pringle raised Hughes’ hand after scoring it 40-36 to the Bellshill fighter. Hughes now moves on to a Commonwealth title fight against Irishman Carl Frampton at the end of January.

Prizefighter - Featherweights
IAN BAILEY
Prizefighter - Featherweights
29th October @ York Hall, London

London - Tuesday, 25th October 2011
Ian Bailey - Quietly Confident Of Prizefighter Success This Saturday
One of the most underrated boxers in the lower weight divisions, Ian Bailey, believes that this coming weekend he’ll finally get the opportunity to show boxing fans ‘what he’s made of’, when he takes part in the hugely popular Matchroom Sport promoted Prizefighter series, which showcases the Featherweight division for the first time, at York Hall in Bethnal Green on Saturday, 29th October.
Since turning pro three years ago 27 year old Bailey has earned a reputation of willingness to fight anyone, no matter how short the notice, and as such has fought some of the divisions biggest names, such as British and Commonwealth Champ Lee Selby, Scottish Area Champ Kris Matthew Hughes, English Champ Ryan Walsh, Commonwealth Champ Carl Frampton, Kid Galahad and Michael Walsh.
It’s this experience, aswell as his total willingness to face ‘all comers’, that is likely to stand Bailey in good stead in this edition of Prizefighter, as mixing it up with the likes of two time World Champ Choi Tseveenpurev, Irish Champ Mickey Coveney, the undefeated pairing of Lee Glover and Troy James, or come to that experienced fighters like Rhys Roberts and Lee Jennings, is unlikely to faze him one iota.
Following a tough sparring session with Ben Murphy, at the TRAD TKO gym in Canning Town, Bailey spoke briefly on his upcoming appearance, “I was delighted when Johnny (Eames) told me. It’s a really good opportunity for me , it’s a fair crack at a leading competition so hopefully I can prove how good I am.
I’m not worried about it being televised at all, I’ve had a couple of my bouts shown on telly before. I think I’ve had one win on telly and two losses, but they’ve normally been short notice jobs.
The Boxing public have not got to see me at my best, I mean the Prizefighter is something I have had time to prepare for, unlike those fights, so they’re going to see me at my best, that’s important to me.
I need to get the first fight out of the way and then I’ll win it, it’s a mental thing I need to stay cool and calm, it doesn’t matter who I get in the first fight as long as I can stay relaxed, which I’m gonna do, win the first fight then I can win the whole thing. ”
Bailey then turned his attention to his TRAD TKO team mate ‘Saint’ George Jupp, who will also be taking part in the tournament, “I have mixed feelings about George also being on the show, I mean I’ve sparred god knows how many rounds with George, right since I turned professional three, three and half years ago, so obviously I know him inside and out, but he can say the same about me.
It would be a shame if we met each other early on in the competition, ideally it would be great to fight each other in the final, doubt that’s gonna happen though. We’ll probably end up getting drawn first.
He knows me as well as I know him so if we fought each other it would be a good fight for the crowd, but wouldn’t be great for us, or the TRAD TKO gym, but we’ll get the job done and then shake hands afterwards.”
Prizefighter - Featherweights takes place at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 29th October 2011 and will also be broadcast live on Skysports.
Tickets, priced £35 (standard seated) and £60 (ringside), for Prizefighter - Featherweights are available now, either on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA - for further information call 07960 850645.

Renaissance: Tom Little

Tom Little - “I’m Looking Forward To Setting The Heavyweight Division Alight”
Hatfield Heavyweight Tom Little is set to debut, against Lithuanian Rolandas Cesna, at the Graham Earl Promotions ‘Renaissance’ event at the Liquid Nightclub in Luton on Sunday, 31st July.
Former World Champ Graham Earl knows a good prospect when he sees one, so when he recently said, “I’ll be debuting an exciting new Heavyweight on the 31st“ and “he’s one of the best Heavyweights I’ve ever seen”, you know that Tom has to be special.
As an amateur young Tom, who stands at a whooping 6’6” in his socks, won sixteen of his twenty two contests. Besides his height, Tom’s main advantage is his exceptional speed, making him somewhat unique in a division renowned for big lumbering punchers.
Speaking earlier today Tom expanded on this as well as spoke about his upcoming debut, “I’m really looking forward to it and I’m looking forward to setting the Heavyweight division alight
I always knew my style was more suited to the pros than the amateurs, especially for the Heavyweight scene, because I’ve got a lot of speed which I believe the current crop aren’t going to be able to live with, which I’m going to prove on the 31st when I showcase myself to everybody.
I’ve got a good tall range, stunning stiff jab. There’s some fighters out there that are bigger than me but that don’t mean much in the Heavyweights because you can’t hurt something you can’t hit.
Basically I can’t wait to get out there, start winning and get myself noticed so people start talking about me.”
Tom Little versus Rolandas Cesna will be supporting the highly anticipated rematch between Manny Oshunrinde and Jahmaine Smyle that headlines ‘Renaissance
Graham Earl has put together an exciting undercard to support Oshunrinde-Smyle II that features, besides Tom Little, Belfast’s big banging Joe Hillerby as well as the debuts of James Smith and Danny Mulhern.
Tickets, priced £30, for the Graham Earl Promoted ‘Renaissance’ event at Liquid Nightclub, Gordon Street, Luton on Sunday July 31st 2011 are available on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at Graham Earl’s House of Champions Gym, Unit 11 Hitchin Road Industrial Estate, Luton, Bedfordshire, LU2 0DZ

Leon ‘Solid’ Williams Vs. David Vicena

Williams In Confident Mood Ahead Of Vicena Clash On 19th March.
Southern Area Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams is set for his second outing of the year when he faces Czech Republic hardman David Vicena at the Steve Goodwin Promoted ‘Essex Eruption’ quadruple headline super show at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, Essex on Saturday 19th March 2011.
Leon will be looking to get back in winning ways, following his surprising stoppage loss against Richard Turba last month, in order to focus fully on his upcoming Southern Area title defense as well as his planned assault on the British title trail.
Leon has been matched with a tough opponent, as David Vicena has proven himself more than handful for top ranked fighters on many occasions. His last two fights were against #2 ranked Sandro Siproshvili and #3 ranked Roman Kracik and although he lost both times it was by extremely close majority decisions, having drawn the contest on a single judges card on both occasions.
Following a sparring session, with London Based Dutch Cruiserweight Mitchell Balker at the Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town, Leon spoke briefly about the upcoming fight and his desire to redress the couple of blemishes on his record, “I’m going to be going forward, that’s what I’m supposed to be doing. I’ll put the pressure on and do what I do best and that’s fight.
It’ll be a good warm up for my title defense. I’ll be looking to take him out, I’m going to make my name now.
After this fight I’ll be straight back in the gym and start planning for the next fight, hopefully within the month. Get ready for another fight, whether it’s another defense, or an eight rounder, ten rounder. I want to keep it moving and I really want to put things right on my record, you know those losses at Prizefighter and my last fight.
Against John Lewis-Dickenson I felt they scored it like amateur boxing. I thought I was a professional not an amateur. They scored it on a points system yet I was putting on the pressure, landing the cleaner shots yet they gave it to him with scoring like an amateur.
I’d definitely fight him again, I definitely want to fight him again and I’ll take him out.
The fight with Richard Turba I put that down to the preparation I did before the fight, things I don’t normally do. I don’t ever go down, I’ve been caught clean on many occasions but I never go down. I put that down to my preparations.
First round I didn’t get caught by any shots. I fought on the back foot. I’m not a back foot fighter but it worked for me. Second round I got caught, that was down to my preparation that I done.
If I got to fight him again I put it on him and do what I do best and that’s come forward and make it a real fight.
It’ll be fantastic if I can get a rematch with them both. There’ll be a different result, most definitely.”
Leon ‘Solid’ Williams versus David Vicena will co-headline the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Essex Eruption’ super show at Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, Essex on Saturday 19th March 2011.
‘Essex Eruption’, in addition to Leon Williams, is co-headlined by British Master challenger ‘Phat’ Pat McAleese, who faces Franz Gonzalez, Romford’s top ten rated Cruiserweight Tony ‘The Conqueror’ Conquest and Yassine ‘The Showman’ El Maachi, who will both be against yet to be named opponents
The undercard of the quadruple headlined super show includes a whole host of local talent including Leon’s Ultrachem TKO team mates Daniel Herdman, who faces Kevin McCauley, ‘Pretty’ Ricky Boylan versus Kristian Laight and the highly rated unbeaten Featherweight prospect ‘Saint’ George Jupp against a yet to be named opponent.
Michael ‘The Zambezi Hitman’ Norgrove will be looking to extend his unbeaten record to five when he faces Czech Republic’s Jan Balog. Another fighter who will be looking to increase his uneaten record is Biggleswade’s Jamie Boness.
Middleweight Kris Agyei-Dua and Danny Brown will be making their second outing in a Month, after both securing wins on their debuts at York Hall on February 20th.
Further fights are expected to be announced shortly to bring the ‘Essex Eruption’ card to fourteen bouts.
