Erick Ochieng: Now I’m Ready For The Big Fish - Rose or Cox Next?

On Saturday night, at Alexandra Palace in London, English Light Middleweight Champion Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng retained his title in style, with a fifth round stoppage over Southern Area champ Ryan Toms.

In doing so the 25 year old from Stoke Newington, via Nairobi, Kenya, sent a solid statement of intent to British Champion Brian Rose and Commonwealth Champion Jamie Cox that he has them firmly in his sights.

Even though he is without doubt a natural talent, Ochieng firmly puts his meteoric rise down to his manager and coach Bryan Lawrence and his unconventional approach, by today’s standard, of taking tough learning fights rather than ‘protecting’ his charge with journeymen throughout the early stages of his career.

Whilst it is true that during his early career Ochieng fought the odd journeyman, such as Matt Scriven (Erick’s debut fight) and Alex Spitko, as well as a couple of tough fighters with negative records, the vast amount of his fights have been against genuine prospects.

In just his second bout Ochieng took on, and beat, Prince David Davis in his own back yard in Nottingham, then following a fantastic second round KO against seriously tough Jon Harrison faced, and beat, unbeaten previously unbeaten prospect Curtis Valentine.

In his fifth bout Ochieng stopped the durable Alex Spitko, before going on to beat former yet another seriously tough opponent in Lee Noble.

Ochieng then suffered his only loss of his career, a highly contentious points decision to rising prospect Luke Robinson, after which referee Ken Curtis was slated by the media for this rather dubious decision.

Not being one to dwell on things, within weeks Bryan Lawrence accepted another testing challenge for his talented charge, one that could easily be described as an early career defining fight, against Liam Cameron, a seasoned, and previously undefeated in nine outings, prospect. What’s more again the bout would be in the opponents own back yard.

With another big scalp under his belt, an eliminator for the British title was quickly lined up, but fell through just weeks before fight night. Instead Ochieng took a low key six rounder, against Dee Mitchell, at the York Hall in London in order to keep busy.

This proved to be a very good move, as a few days after his victory over Mitchell, Ochieng received news that he was to get a shot at the vacant English title, the bad news though it was to be against Liverpool’s Scott Quigley, who like Erick had just the one loss - which came at the hands of Robert Lloyd Taylor in the final of the excellent Matchroom Sport promoted Prizefighter Light Middleweight tournament.

Over a thousand punches were thrown in the first eight rounds of the barnstorming, Fight of the Year’ nominated battle. The pair of Warriors stood toe to toe most of the fight throwing seemingly never ending salvos of massive uppercuts, heavy hooks and solid straights.

After eight nonstop action filled rounds, Ochieng was five rounds up on the judges scorecards and Quigley already had the look of a beaten man, as was proved just seconds into the ninth, when Quigley’s corner threw in the towel to save their man any further punishment.

Some four months later Ochieng and Lawrence were heading back up the M1 to Nottingham, where ‘The Eagle’ was set to face yet another midlander, AA Lowe, in his home town, this time though it was for the first defense of his English Crown and more importantly for Ochieng it would be in front of a massive Worldwide audience on the undercard of Carl Froch’s defense of his IBF World crown against Lucian Bute.

‘The Eagle’ put on a masterful display, boxing of the back foot and picking his punches, and boy did he pick them in style on his way to securing a virtual shut out points victory.

Which brings us full circle to Saturday night and the magnificent stoppage win over Ryan Toms, leaving only the question of what now for the soaring Eagle?

On returning to the TRAD TKO Gym earlier today, the effervescent Ochieng shared his view of the fight, as well as provided an insight into his future plans.

“First of all I want to give thanks to my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for the victory.

It was awesome, you know, I knew Toms was going to be a tough opponent, which he was, he had a tough head for sure.

Everyone that can punch is dangerous, he stopped Nathan Weisse in his last fight so I knew he had power in his left hand and I knew I had to stay away from his left, if you’re fighting a southpaw you have to stay away from the left, which is what I was doing.

In the first couple of rounds I kept making him miss and focused on him and what I am going to do. I was just trying to find my distance, you know just measuring him up, because he has that good defense.

At the end of the fourth Bryan said you’ve got to walk him down and hold your ground more, so in the fifth that’s what I did, I held my ground and hit him on the body, when I did I see it in his face, he didn’t like the feel of them punches on his body, so then I thought ‘ah these body punches are getting to him’, so went at him again and threw a big left hook and he just went straight down.

For the count I went to the corner and I came back and went right back at the body, because I knew the body shots were hurting him, I see the opportunity and grabbed it with both hands and threw more shots to the body until the referee stepped in and stopped the fight.

I was overjoyed and great things ahead.

I spoke with Eddie Hearn and we decided I’m going to vacate the title now and we’re ready for the big fish. We’re looking at the Commonwealth or the British, whichever comes first I’m ready for it.

I have a great team behind me, they’re doing a great job and the fan base, well what can I say, I have a great fans, you know ‘Eagle, Eagle, Eagle’ what can I say they’re just great and really support me. They really want to see me fight, not just because I’m a good looking funny guy, they come along and they are loud, which is great as this really pushes me.

I’m really happy the way things are progressing, as I keep saying I’m a World Champion in the making, it’s just a matter of time.”

Back in January Stoke Newington’s Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng won the English Light Middleweight title in emphatic style, on just his tenth professional outing, in a sensational all action battle against Liverpool’s Nick Quigley, that many have as an early contender for 2012 ‘Fight of the Year’ honours

In just under two weeks time 25 year old Erick will make the first defense of this recently acquired title, against Newark’s AA Lowe, on the undercard of the biggest, most meaningful UK event of the year so far, when Carl Froch challenges Lucian Bute for the IBF Super Middleweight Crown, at the Nottingham Arena.

Following a recent training session, at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, an ebullient Erick was not only brimming with confidence, of victory on the 26th May, but was also keen to emphasise his Championship credentials.

“Yeah, I’ll be out again on the 26th May defending my English title against AA Lowe.

He’s a good boxer, he’s been around, so we’re looking to perform good, look good and retain my title in style.”

“Training has been excellent as ever, my manager/coach Brian Lawrence wouldn’t have it any other way and again I’ve had the best sparring you can get.

The quality of sparring here at the TRAD TKO makes all the difference, I did some eight rounders with Colin Lynes the other week and have had plenty of other quality sparring, these sparring sessions are great preparation.”

“I mean Colin Lynes is a former British, European and World Champion, you can’t get better than that, you’re always learning from those guys.

As you can see we’re not leaving any stone unturned in the gym, I’m in good shape so I’m looking to put a good performance on the 26th May.”

“I never look past people or my next fight, but have to say this is just the start, I’ve always said I am already a World Champion, just people don’t know it yet, they will soon but right now they know I’m the English Champion.

I will defend my title successfully on the 26th May and then by the end of the year my focus will be on the British or Commonwealth title.”

Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng’s English Light Middleweight title defense, against AA Lowe, will be main support at the Matchroom Sport promoted event headlined by the IBF Super Middleweight World Championship bout between Montreal, Canada based Romanian Lucian Bute and Nottingham’s Carl Froch, which co-features Carl Frampton versus Raul Hirales, for the IBF Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight title, at the Nottingham Arena in Nottingham on Saturday 26th May 2012 and will be shown live and exclusive on Sky Sports.

English Title Shot Beckons For Ochieng After Convincing Win Over Cameron

Stoke Newington’s sensational Light Middleweight prospect Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng returned to training, at the TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, this week after taking a short rest following his magnificent points win over the highly rated, and previously unbeaten, Liam Cameron.

Erick happily accepted the offer to face Cameron, on his home turf in Sheffield, even though Cameron was unbeaten in nine outings and being hailed as a prospective title contender.

Young Erick put on a scintillating performance to easily take the victory by a 77-74 points margin, which see him rocket up the rankings and into championship contention. It is proposed that Erick will now challenge current holder Brian Rose for the English Light Middleweight title later this year.

Following a training session, under the watchful eyes of manager-trainer Brian Lawrence, Erick spoke briefly about the fight, “Yes, I did the business. I want to thank God for the victory.

It was a good fight. He was rated as a good amateur, former ABA champion he had nine fights, nine wins, has three TKO’s so I went to his back yard and took care of business you know.

Broke him down, you know, I was ready to knock him out, but I got the win. I’m not shocked because I knew I was going to go there and beat him. It just shows what kind of fighter I am. As I keep saying I am a World Champion in the making, you know.

He was a good fighter, I beat him because of the fighters I have fought compared to the fighters he has fought, you can’t compare. I had tough fights, you know those tough fights work to my credit and make me a stronger fighter, more determined to win.

Now I’m rated number ten in Britain, so which is good, set me up good. My next fight will be for the English title, which Brian Rose has at the moment, so we’re going to be taking it from him, hopefully in September.

Brian Lawrence is a very good coach and the best is yet to come as they say. I feel good and I’m back in training now. I took a week off and I feel good and strong so it’s just onwards and upwards now.”

Further news on the proposed Brian Rose versus Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng, for the English Light Middleweight title, is expected in the near future - watch this space.

Erick Ochieng - Easy Win Over Noble Leads To Title Shot.

On Saturday night Stoke Newington’s exceptional Light Middleweight prospect Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng easily secured his sixth win, albeit not in his usual all action style.

Ochieng’s opponent, the reigning British Masters Light Middleweight Champion Lee ‘Lightning’ Noble, clearly didn’t come to fight, instead he just closed up shop and pulled down the shutters, in a similar way that he did against Ochieng’s Ultrachem TKO Gym mate ‘Phat’ Pat McAleese back in September.

‘The Eagle’ had been ringside when Noble knocked out a tiring McAleese - who had thrown a hundred plus punches for over eight rounds - in the ninth with more or less his first real punch of the fight.

On Saturday Ochieng showed a maturity that belied his tender years, by choosing a more patient route than McAleese, by using his jab to good effect and waiting for the opportunity to open up Noble’s fortress like defense.

After six rounds no real opportunity had arisen and judge Ken Curtis rightfully declared the fight a shutout 60-54 points victory to ‘The Eagle’.

Earlier today Ochieng popped into the Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town, whilst there he gave his view of the fight as well as announced the exciting news regarding his next fight. “I thank God for the victory man. Lee was quite heavy, he was eleven-eight and I was eleven-three.

First round I just kept showing him my jab. He was covering up a lot so all I could do was hit him with the jab. Eventually he come forward a bit so I’d hit him with my jab. He was eating my Jab all the time. There wasn’t much I could do he just wasn’t throwing, so I kept jabbing.

That’s all he did was cover up and sometimes used his jab. He’s quite strong but he didn’t want to give me any openings or make a fight of it.

I was in great shape and was ready for any opportunities. He should have opened up and come to fight. I came to fight but he didn’t want to know, he just covered up and stayed out of trouble.

At the end of the six rounds I won, I still won. I feel good, that’s six in a row. Yeah and now my next fight will be for the Southern Area title.

I have such great fans, they were standing shouting ‘Eagle, Eagle, Eagle’ throughout. I was disappointed for them that he didn’t want to make a fight of it. They still kept chanting though.

I have such great fans and can’t thank them enough for the great support. Thanks, you guys are the best fans in the world.”

It is expected that an announcement will be made soon on the date and opponent for Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng’s challenge for the Southern Area Light Middleweight title - Watch this space.

McAleese Backs Ochieng To Beat Noble This Saturday

Light Middleweight prospect ‘Phat’ Pat McAleese today gave his full support to Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng by stating that his Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym mate will easily defeat Lee ‘Lightning’ Noble this Saturday at the Frank Maloney promoted Jamie Arthur vs Jason Booth Commonwealth Super Bantamweight title clash at the Brentwood Leisure Centre, Brentwood, Essex.

The only blemishes on McAleese’s otherwise immaculate record have come courtesy of Noble. The first, at Goresbrook Leisure Centre in March last year, was declared a draw by referee Richard James Davis even though McAleese had a superior work rate and had landed the more meaningful shots throughout.

The rematch, at Steve Goodwin’s excellent ‘It’ Personal’ event in September, had far more at stake, being it was for the vacant British Masters Light Middleweight title.

For almost nine rounds McAleese not just outworked Noble, he plain dominated him. Noble’s work rate was exceptionally poor, he seemed content to cover up and absorb the constant barrage of punches, only occasionally responding with the odd jab or flurry here and there.

In the dying seconds of the ninth round Noble let rip with a peach of a right uppercut. It was a near perfect shot and dropped McAleese on the spot.

On learning that Ultrachem TKO gym mate Ochieng’s replacement opponent for Saturday’s Sky Sports

.televised event was to be Noble, Newmarket’s McAleese was quick to show his support by saying, “I don’t think Erick will have too much trouble, he hits hard, he’s got a fast jab. When I fought him (Lee Noble) I was eight rounds up going into the ninth round but just got caught by a lucky shot.

I think Erick’s a little bit more cagey, I think he’ll pick Noble off and out work him. Noble’ll find it hard because he’ll be hitting down a lot, being taller and Erick gets really low. I think he’ll find it really hard to fight Erick.

Erick will come through with flying colours.”

Switching tack McAleese spoke a little about his last bout as well as his upcoming fight on March 19th and the possibility of a second rematch between himself and Noble, “Trilogy, I’d like to fight him again. I’m fighting on the 19th March and then I’ve got a show on the 30th April, which is in Newmarket where I live

I’ve boxed him (Noble) twice. The first one I thought I’d won hands down but they gave a draw. The last time I was eight rounds up going into the ninth and got caught by a lucky shot.

I think a third time I’ll want to just put my mind to rest. Neither of them should have been negatives on my record, I just want to set the record straight.

I’ve been working well with Johnny Eames and Brian O’Shaughnessy, who’s my new co-trainer. Doing loads and loads of new things. Come 19th March I’m going to come out a much improved fighter.

Hopefully I’ll get the win and then look for a rematch with Noble.”
