Garcia vs. Morales & Malignaggi vs. Cano in Brooklyn on October 20th
BROOKLYN (August 22, 2024) – Big-time boxing returns to Brooklyn after more than a 50-year hiatus on Saturday, October 20, when Golden Boy Promotions presents the first boxing event at the new Barclays Center. Televised live on SHOWTIME, the night will feature a star-studded boxing card including two world championship fights and a host of New York’s top talents.
The main event will feature unbeaten Danny “Swift” Garcia defending his World Boxing Association (WBA) Super, World Boxing Council (WBC) & Ring Magazine Super Lightweight World Championships against the man he defeated to win the WBC belt, legendary Mexican warrior and future Hall of Famer Erik “El Terrible” Morales. In the co-featured bout, Brooklyn’s own Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi risks his WBA Welterweight World Championship against hard-hitting Pablo Cesar “El Demoledor” Cano.
Tickets start at $50 and go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, August 29 at 10:00 a.m. ET and will be available at www.barclayscenter.com, www.ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations, or at 800-745-3000.

Barclays Center and Golden Boy Promotions previously announced a multi-year deal in which they will hold at least 12 events annually at Barclays Center. It has been more than a half century since Brooklyn was a significant hub of the sport of boxing.
The explosive night of boxing is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Box Latino and supported by Golden Boy Promotions sponsors Corona, DeWalt Tools and AT&T. The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast begins live at 9:00 p.m. ET. Preliminary fights will air live on SHOWTIME EXTREME® beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET.
All participants, along with Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark and SHOWTIME Sports Executive Vice President and General Manager Stephen Espinoza will participate in a press conference scheduled for Thursday, August 30 at the New York Marriott at Brooklyn Bridge, the official hotel of Barclays Center, in downtown Brooklyn to officially announce these fights and others. Maidana-Morales Confirmed: April 9th Las Vegas

A rep for former three-division champion Erik Morales (51-6, 35KOs) has told members of the Mexican press that a deal was reached to fight hard-hitting junior welterweight contender Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27KOs) on April 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Golden Boy Promotions is handling the card. The fight came about after Juan Manuel Marquez took a pass on fighting Morales in order to concentrate on sorting out his promotional situation with Golden Boy Promotions.
Morales was quoted on the subject as saying - “it’s an honor for me to return to Las Vegas … and what better way to do it than by facing a formidable opponent such as Marcos Maidana.”
In other news, reports in Argentina have published quotes that came from Maidana’s personal twitter account, in which the fighter annouces that he’s going to use a new trainer for the fight on April 9. Maidana has parted ways with veteran trainer Miguel Diaz. He does not reveal at the moment who the next trainer will be. He expects to retain one in the next few days.
“I want to announce that after one and a half years of working of with him, I’ll no longer have to Miguel Diaz as chief trainer. We had a great time working together for that period and I’ve learned some valuable things from him. We thought that we needed to make a change so Miguel and I parted ways on amicable terms of course. You will learn who my next trainer will be in the next few days,” Maidana said.

Morales and Marquez will fight on 4 / 9 in Las Vegas
According to Golden Boy Promotions the fight between these two great Mexican boxers will be held in Las Vegas (USA) on April 9 and will be broadcast by HBO.
Morales himself confirmed the fight with Marquez and said that all formalities had already been settled. WBC President Jose Sulaiman has assured that the fight Marquez - Morales will take place for the WBC Diamond Belt.
“To date, only Manny Pacquiao owns such a belt. And now, Marquez and Morales fight for a diamond belt, their fight will be the third for this prestigious title, “- said Jose Sulaiman.
The second bout for the WBC belt diamond was a clash between Jean Pascal and Bernard Hopkins, but then the winner of the belt and was not determined, because that fight ended in a draw.
