- Tavoris Cloud vs Jean Pascal - A light heavyweight world championship showdown-potentially the division’s best matchup in years between two young fighters in their prime-has been confirmed for Saturday, Aug. 11, at Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, when undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (24-0, 19 KOs), of Tallahassee, Fla., defends his title against popular hometown favorite and former World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight titleholder Jean Pascal (26-2-1, 16 KOs) on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING live on SHOWTIME.
- WBC middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has started his own boxing promotions company. It was announced yesterday in Junior’s hometown of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, that the first card of “Chávez Jr. Promotions” will take place June 8 in the city’s Parque Revolución Arena. Headlining will be a middleweight ten-rounder between Saul Roman and Alfredo Contreras. The event was announced by promoter Lorena Beltran representing Chavez, who is away training for his June 16 clash with Andy Lee. Beltran stated that this is a project that Junior had in mind for two and a half years.
- Ricky Hatton & Steve Bunce on Primetime - LONDON (29 May 2024) - British boxing legend Ricky Hatton will be on hand to share his thoughts during Primetime’s exclusive coverage of Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley on Saturday June 9th, live on Primetime (Channel 480 on Sky and Virgin on Demand). Hatton will be joined in the studio alongside the ever entertaining Steve Bunce and fight game expert Ronald McIntosh. All three are sure to provide a unique and in-depth analysis ahead of what is set to be a great night of boxing from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
- IBO cruiserweight kingpin Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (29-6, 20 KO’s) hosted a workout for the Southern California media at The Rock in Carson, California, on Tuesday as he winds down preparations for Saturday’s Showtime-televised grudge match against unbeaten Lateef Kayode (18-0, 14 KO’s) at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
- Martinez comments on Williams accident - “Upon learning of Paul’s injuries, I was deeply saddened,” said Martinez, who twice shared the ring with Williams, with their first epic battle being named Fight of the Year for 2010. “When you are in the ring with a real champion, you know it, and Paul Williams was a very great champion, in every sense of the word. Paul and his family are in my thoughts and prayers through this very difficult time.”
- Hatton predicts Pacquiao victory - “Manny Pacquiao is the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world and he goes into this fight as the favourite but Timothy Bradley is a very slick and tidy boxer so this isn’t going to be an easy fight for him. Against Junior Witter we saw how well schooled Bradley was and how he was able to figure out his style so quickly so I think he will cause Pacquiao some problems,” said Hatton.
- Archie Solis Requires More Surgery - The return of Ulysses ‘Archie’ Solís (32-2-3, 21KOs), scheduled for June 23, is now off. The IBF junior flyweight champion has revealed that he will undergo further surgery for one of the fractures that he sustained in last October’s alleged confrontation with WBC 154-pound champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez. Solis was going to appear in the co-feature to Zanfer’s big show, which has a main event with Hernán ‘Tyson’ Márquez defending his World Boxing Association flyweight title against Arden Diale at the Cum of Hermosillo, Sonora.
Dawson Wants Title Shot
Former World Boxing Council (WBC) Light Heavyweight Champion “Bad” Chad Dawson congratulated Bernard Hopkins for his record-breaking victory last Saturday night against Jean Pascal. With his unanimous decision, Hopkins became the oldest fighter to ever win a world title.
Hopkins now has the obligation to face Dawson in his first defense because it was Dawson who stepped aside to allow a rematch of the controversial Pascal-Hopkins draw first, in exchange for an appearance on the show’s undercard bout and the right to face the winner.
Dawson defeated fellow former champ Adrian Diaconu in the main supporting bout that night, keeping his end of the bargain he struck with the main event fighters’ camps.
Unfortunately, one of the first messages to come from new champion Hopkins’ camp came when promoter Richard Schaefer told ESPN he would “look for contract loopholes” that would allow Hopkins to fight someone other than Dawson.
“Bernard, I’m sure you would agree I allowed your fight to happen. You said at the press conference I was next. I know that besides being a great champion, you’re also a person of your word, so I look forward to facing you later this year,” said Dawson.
Dawson’s promoter, Gary Shaw of Gary Shaw Productions, echoes Dawson’s sentiments. “Bernard, congratulations on the wave of good will you are currently riding. You deserve it. I know you’ll do the right thing and keep your word against Chad. We are looking forward to a terrific fight.”

- Jean Pascal Vs Bernard Hopkins
The Quebec (Canada), Commission is considering additional dope testing for both parties in the rematch fight between WBC/IBO light heavyweight Champion Jean Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KOs) and former world champion Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 KOs). The bout will take place at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on the 21st of May. At a press conference in March, Pascal suggested that Hopkins could have used doping in preparation for the fight which ended in a draw. Pascal openly challenged Hopkins to take the dope tests.
Meanwhile, in accordance with the requirements of Hopkins, there will be no Canadians amongst officials. The WBC has appointed the following officials - Judges are Rey Danseco (Philippines), Anek Hontongkam (Thailand) and Guido Cavalleri (Italy). The third man in the ring will be 48-year old Ian John-Lewis (UK).

Former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (43-2, 32 Ko’s) will be fighting for the first time in over a year when he steps into the ring to fight French contender Mehdi Bouadia 22-3, 10 KO’s) in a fight in Parken, Copenhagen, Denmark. This fight will serve as a tune-up bout for Kessler to get rid of his ring rust and stat paving the way forward for an eventual shot against IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute in the future.

Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola is scheduled to return to The Home Depot Center this Saturday, May 14 to fight Nagy “Dominican Dynamite” Aguilera. The Heavyweight bout is the co-feature to the Super Six World Boxing Classic semi-final bout between WBA Super Middleweight Champion Andre Ward and former world champion Arthur Abraham.
- David Tua and Kali Meehan in Negotiations
Theage.com.au has reported that Australian heavyweight Kali Meehan, now aged 41, has begun negotiating for a year-end clash with New Zealand powerhouse David Tua, who at age 38 is a few years younger than Meehan, also has the option of facing Monte “Two Gunz” Barrett in the summer; with the return fight being one Tua wants after the shock draw he fought to with the New Yorker last July.
- Arce coming to Puerto Rico
WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel said yesterday that he will invite new champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce to Puerto Rico to get his belt and pay tribute to the fighter to become the first Mexican boxer with world titles in four different weight divisions (counting interim titles). “We are coordinating the date for bringing Arce to Puerto Rico for giving him his super bantamweight belt and also giving him a diamond ring for his three WBO titles,” Valcarcel said about the three WBO crowns Arce won at 108, 115 and 122 pounds. Arce (57-6-2, 44 KOs) won the WBO 122lb title last Saturday when he beat by TKO Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (20-1-1, 17 KOs) in round 12. His other belt was the WBC interim 112lb title.
- Witter on next Prizefighter
Junior Witter and Colin Lynes head the bill for the Prizefighter Welterweights II at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Tuesday June 7 – the final Prizefighter of the season. Former WBC light welterweight champion Witter could face Lynes at the same venue that they met in 2005 when Sheffield’s Witter successfully defended his Commonwealth, European and British titles against Londoner Lynes. Witter won his WBC crown in 2006 against DeMarcus Corley and defended it twice the following year before Timothy Bradley took it from him through a split decision in 2008. There’s a chance for double retribution for former IBO World, British and European champ Lynes, with that score to settle against ‘The Hitter’ as well as one with Prizefighter, after he lost the Light-Welterweights final to Gavin Rees in December 2009. Former British champion Kevin McIntyre, unbeaten prospects John Wayne Hibbert and Bobby Gladman, Yassine El Maachi, Peter McDonagh and Nathan Graham complete the line-up for the 19th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one night tournaments.
- Haye trash talks Wladimir
WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) and IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) met on Monday in a press conference in Hamburg, Germany at the Imtech Arena, the site where the two fighters will be battling on July 2nd. Haye, 30, refused to shake Wladimir’s hand during the meeting and continued with his war of words aimed at angering the 6’6″ Ukrainian. As usual, Wladimir has opted to not trash talk - Wladimir said “I really respect you and you are a fantastic fighter with an impressive record. I believe it will be a pretty good lesson in respect on July 2nd.”

Boxing Talk With Tavoris Cloud
.
By Daniel Ciminera
Speaking to Tavoris Cloud today, he indicated he’d be fighting “real soon, possibly March/April”, though didn’t give much away with regards to who, naming Chad Dawson, Jean Pascal, Bernard Hopkns, Beibut Shumenov, and Jurgen Braehmer as possible candidates. Which is basically the top 5 ranked guys without him and Nathan Cleverly included. As generic an answer as is possible, almost.
We can pretty safely rule out Brahmer who has a mandatory defence to make against Nathan Cleverly, the interim WBO title holder, who was interestingly left out from Cloud’s shortlist. When I asked him “what if Cleverly beats Braehmer?”, he wryly responded with “we’ll see” indicating he does not think that Cleverly can beat Braehmer or that he knows something we do not about the Braehmer/Cleverly clash. He also said he wants to unify the WBO title “this year” so we can assume that Braehmer or Cleverly are definitely on the cards in 2011.
We can also probably rule out Dawson for March/April after suffering his first career loss at the hands of Jean Pascal last summer. A well rested, and eager to get back on winning ways Dawson would be a very dangerous fight for anyone in the division to take. I can’t see the young Cloud taking this fight.
This leaves WBA and IBA title holder Shumenov, off the back of a 6th round KO versus experienced William Joppy, also a dangerous proposition, but with high reward in terms of title unifications. More so than fighting either Pascal or Hopkins who drew with each other last month. Pascal put an end to Dawson’s unbeaten run in 2010 and in gaining a draw with the ever-wiley Bernard Hopkins has cemented himself among the top light-heavyweights, and as we all know, Hopkins can make anybody look bad.
So for me, of these three, Shumenov is the only one worth going after right now in terms of “risk v reward” at least anyway, with a winter bout with the winner of Braehmer v Cleverly for a massive unification bout which would likely be one of the best fights of the year. And would be another shining-light example of top boxers not avoiding each other for the sake of it!
