Bacskai and Selimov Crowned at 55th Bocskai Memorial

Bacskai and Selimov Crowned at Bocskai Memorial
This weekend saw the finals of the strong 55th Bocskai Memorial Tournament in Debrecen, Hungary, where Balazs Bacskai defended his title and six Russians fought for gold and secured the best team trophy.
The special guests of the tournament were the President of the European Boxing Confederation, Dr. Humbert Furgoni, AIBA Executive Committee member Dr. Sandor Csotonyi and the Mayor of Debrecen, Mr. Lajos Kosa.
In the opening gold medal bout of the day AIBA World Championships silver medalist David Ayrapetyan of Russia and two-time Hungarian National Champion Istvan Lakatos fought in a re-match of last year’s light flyweight final. The bout finished with another victory for Ayrapetyan, the strong Russian competitor beating the young Hungarian by 7:1.
Reigning European Champion 22-year-old Misha Aloyan of Russia and Moldova’s European Championships bronze medalist Alexandru Riscan battled for the flyweight gold. Aloyan did not give Riscan any chance to beat him, dominating all three rounds to win by 8:1.
Former European Champion 23-year-old Luke Campbell from Hull in England found the way back to the final victory against newly-crowned Hungarian National Champion 19-year-old Krisztian Nagy, who lives in Szolnok. The young Hungarian was an unpleasant fighter, giving Campbell a tough task to beat him.
Russia’s two-time European Champion Albert Selimov, who claimed the gold medal at the 2007 AIBA World Championships in Chicago, was one of the best names in the tournament. His rival in the lightweight final was Panamerican Champion Yasnier Toledo of Cuba. Selimov showed some great series of punches during the fight and secured the gold medal winning the bout by 4:1. The Kaspiysk-based boxer was awarded the best foreign boxer trophy after the finals in Debrecen.
At the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India in October last year, AIBA World Championships bronze medalist Bradley Saunders of England and Beijing Olympian Richarno Colin of Mauritius fought in the semifinal but their rematch in Debrecen was for the gold medal. The speedy Mauritian boxer caused one of the biggest surprises of the tournament by beating the experienced Saunders by accepted scores after the bout finished 6:6.
Hungary’s reigning European Champion 23-year-old Balazs Bacskai, who is coached by his father, faced Russian National Championships silver medalist teenager Pyotr Khamukov for the first time. Bacskai dominated his Russian opponents last year, beating AIBA World Championships silver medalist Andrey Zamkovoy and National Champion Aleksandr Klinkov.
He dominated the first round of his final led by 2:0 at the break, but the young Russian came back with some hard body shots and equalized the contest at the end of the second three minutes. Bacskai gathered all his strength for the final round and put in a magnificent performance in front of 1500 local spectators to defend his title.
One of the most anticipated fights of the final day was between Olympic Games silver medalist Emilio Correa of Cuba and European Champion Artem Chebotarev of Russia in the middleweight division. Unfortunately, the bout was cancelled due to a hand injury to Chebotarev, leaving Correa to pick up the gold by walk-over.
Finland’s Eemeli Katajisto probably secured the best result of his career after advancing to the final in Debrecen where he had to face Russia’s defending champion and rising star, Nikita Ivanov. The Russian boxer dominated the light heavyweight final and defended his Bocskai throne in Debrecen.
The heavyweight final was held between two youngsters and new hopes: 18-year-old talented Teymur Mammadov of Azerbaijan and Poland’s newcomer at international level Michal Olas, who has been boxing only since 2009. The hectic and close fight finished 3:2 with Mammadov’s unexpected victory paving the way to the European Youth Championships in August.
Former AIBA Youth World Champion 20-year-old Erislandy Savon of Cuba triumphed over Romania’s World Combat Games silver medalist Mihai Nistor in the super heavyweight final. The Romanian ringside abandoned the unequal fight after three minutes and Savon claimed the second Cuban gold medal in Debrecen.

Golden Boy’s Solo Boxeo: Stepping up
BY ROBERT QUIJANO
As the guest of Golden Boy’s Solo Boxeo announcer and friend, Joe A. Martinez, I went to my first boxing event in the States since 2005. It was that dreaded night in Las Vegas watching Winky Wright pick apart my hero and friend Felix “Tito” Trinidad. That was a heartbreaking night for all Boricuas! Although I have attended many fights in Puerto Rico, I had the opportunity to catch up and attend this event with my good friend and author of “The Last Boxing Fan,” Pedro Reyna. Pedro and I go way back and I guess with our knowledge and passion for boxing, you could call us the modern day Bert Sugar and Larry Merchant, with Pedro being Larry Merchant.
These Solo Boxeo bouts were originally scheduled for Vacaville but due to the large capacity expected, the event was moved to Fairfield. The action started with Guy Robb energizing the crowd with a unanimous decision over local favorite Omar Sanchez. The 2nd bout had Fidel Maldonado Jr winning by 2nd round TKO over Carlos Hernandez. Maldonado Jr put Hernandez down 3 times in the bout until the referee’s stoppage in the 2nd. The 3rd bout and first televised bout was an eight round action packed fight between local favorite Alan Sanchez taking on John Grimaldo. Sanchez rocked Grimaldo but Grimaldo showed his heart and his beard in getting up and pressing the action. Sanchez scored the cleaner blows but Grimaldo would not give up. The 4th bout and Main Event had Cuban American Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin taking on journey man Dennis Sharpe. Quillin controlled the action and peppered Sharpe with continuous combinations. Following Sharpe around the ring, Quillin looked impressive in his connections and ring management. Sharpe was battered enough and the referee called a stop to the action in the 4th round. Quillin looked very “sharp” in this bout and is a definite fighter to look out for. “Kid Chocolate” lived up to his nickname and tossed out chocolate to the crowd after the bout was ended in victory. The final bout of the evening showed Manuel “Tino” Avila facing Jose Garcia. Local favorite Avila did not disappoint and made the most of his bout not knowing if it would be televised or not (it was). The crowd chanted “Tino! Tino” and “Tino worked the ring like an experienced champion boxer, avoiding Garcia with his movement and stepping in with two and three punch combinations. Avila had his hand raised in victory as Garcia could not handle the onslaught.
This was a night of “Stepping up.” These fighters although not that well known around the world or even this country for that matter, made the most of their opportunities to shine in front of the cameras. A fighter needs exposure and needs to capitalize on the chance when it is given. These young fighters did that today and you can be sure we will be seeing much more of them. Before the night had ended, I thanked Joe for the excellent seats and we agreed to catch up the next time he is in town. Pedro gave a copy of his book to Joe, Quillin, and local Sacramento boxing matchmaker Edward Rodriguez (former Golden Gloves champion in the early 80′s). Others also in attendance were 175lb prospect Jayson Hubbard, respected Woodland trainer Ricardo Carillo, famed promoter Don Chargin, and many others. It was an excellent night to watch these fighters Step Up!

Ricky Boylan Set For Double Action In Coming Month
By Rio
London - Monday 14th February 2011
Carshalton’s ‘Pretty’ Ricky Boylan has a busy month ahead of him, with two fights scheduled just a few weeks apart, as he prepares to establish his credentials as one of the future stars of the British Lightweight division.
Back in December the former London ABA finalist impressed on his professional debut, against Birmingham’s Sid Razak at the excellent ‘Judgement Day’ event.
It was hard to think that Boylan was debuting, as his performance was exceptionally slick and mature in it’s approach. Round after round Razak was having to cover up as Boylan peppered him with solid combinations to the head and body.
In the final round ‘Pretty Ricky’ changed tactics and boxed on the back foot but still Razak was unable to get any semblance of control due to Boylan’s impressive movement and powerful combinations. Surprisingly the referee deemed the fight as a 59-56 points win for ‘Pretty’ Ricky and not the clear shut out it was.
Boylan’s scintillating performance not just grabbed the headlines but also the attention of promoters Miranda Carter and Steve Goodwin, who were quick to invite him to fight on their upcoming shows.
The first of these events is this coming weekend, when 22 year old Boylan faces the experienced Welsh banger Craig Dyer, at the Miranda Carter promoted ‘The Force of Destiny’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, on Sunday 20th February 2011.
Just four weeks later, on Saturday 19th March, Boylan will make the trek from his Surrey home to the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, Essex, where he will go against the even more experienced Kristian Laight at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Essex Eruption’ event.
Following a training session at Johnny Eames’ Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London, ‘Pretty’ Ricky took a few moments out to talk a little about his upcoming fights. “Yeah I’ll be out twice in the next month, It’s good, I want to be busy so I’m really pleased about this.
I said to Johnny (Eames) I just want to be busy this year so it’s good to get two within the month. It’s all good.
On the 20th February I’m fighting Craig Dyer on Miranda Carter’s show at York Hall. His record aint the best but he’s tough, comes forward and he’s strong. I’ve got to stick to my boxing.
Then I’m boxing on the 19th March as well on a Steve Goodwin show in Dagenham. I’ll be against Kristian Laight.
I made a few mistakes on my debut, I was watching a few things. I’ve got to sometimes sit back and look for the opportunity before I throw my shots, instead of just throwing them for the sake of throwing them.
But, I’ve just had the one pro fight so I’m still learning.
I’ll be three and 0 by the end of March hopefully.”
