Bacskai and Selimov Crowned at Bocskai Memorial
This weekend saw the finals of the strong 55th Bocskai Memorial Tournament in Debrecen, Hungary, where Balazs Bacskai defended his title and six Russians fought for gold and secured the best team trophy.
The special guests of the tournament were the President of the European Boxing Confederation, Dr. Humbert Furgoni, AIBA Executive Committee member Dr. Sandor Csotonyi and the Mayor of Debrecen, Mr. Lajos Kosa.
In the opening gold medal bout of the day AIBA World Championships silver medalist David Ayrapetyan of Russia and two-time Hungarian National Champion Istvan Lakatos fought in a re-match of last year’s light flyweight final. The bout finished with another victory for Ayrapetyan, the strong Russian competitor beating the young Hungarian by 7:1.
Reigning European Champion 22-year-old Misha Aloyan of Russia and Moldova’s European Championships bronze medalist Alexandru Riscan battled for the flyweight gold. Aloyan did not give Riscan any chance to beat him, dominating all three rounds to win by 8:1.
Former European Champion 23-year-old Luke Campbell from Hull in England found the way back to the final victory against newly-crowned Hungarian National Champion 19-year-old Krisztian Nagy, who lives in Szolnok. The young Hungarian was an unpleasant fighter, giving Campbell a tough task to beat him.
Russia’s two-time European Champion Albert Selimov, who claimed the gold medal at the 2007 AIBA World Championships in Chicago, was one of the best names in the tournament. His rival in the lightweight final was Panamerican Champion Yasnier Toledo of Cuba. Selimov showed some great series of punches during the fight and secured the gold medal winning the bout by 4:1. The Kaspiysk-based boxer was awarded the best foreign boxer trophy after the finals in Debrecen.
At the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India in October last year, AIBA World Championships bronze medalist Bradley Saunders of England and Beijing Olympian Richarno Colin of Mauritius fought in the semifinal but their rematch in Debrecen was for the gold medal. The speedy Mauritian boxer caused one of the biggest surprises of the tournament by beating the experienced Saunders by accepted scores after the bout finished 6:6.
Hungary’s reigning European Champion 23-year-old Balazs Bacskai, who is coached by his father, faced Russian National Championships silver medalist teenager Pyotr Khamukov for the first time. Bacskai dominated his Russian opponents last year, beating AIBA World Championships silver medalist Andrey Zamkovoy and National Champion Aleksandr Klinkov.
He dominated the first round of his final led by 2:0 at the break, but the young Russian came back with some hard body shots and equalized the contest at the end of the second three minutes. Bacskai gathered all his strength for the final round and put in a magnificent performance in front of 1500 local spectators to defend his title.
One of the most anticipated fights of the final day was between Olympic Games silver medalist Emilio Correa of Cuba and European Champion Artem Chebotarev of Russia in the middleweight division. Unfortunately, the bout was cancelled due to a hand injury to Chebotarev, leaving Correa to pick up the gold by walk-over.
Finland’s Eemeli Katajisto probably secured the best result of his career after advancing to the final in Debrecen where he had to face Russia’s defending champion and rising star, Nikita Ivanov. The Russian boxer dominated the light heavyweight final and defended his Bocskai throne in Debrecen.
The heavyweight final was held between two youngsters and new hopes: 18-year-old talented Teymur Mammadov of Azerbaijan and Poland’s newcomer at international level Michal Olas, who has been boxing only since 2009. The hectic and close fight finished 3:2 with Mammadov’s unexpected victory paving the way to the European Youth Championships in August.
Former AIBA Youth World Champion 20-year-old Erislandy Savon of Cuba triumphed over Romania’s World Combat Games silver medalist Mihai Nistor in the super heavyweight final. The Romanian ringside abandoned the unequal fight after three minutes and Savon claimed the second Cuban gold medal in Debrecen.

Team GB: Bocskai Memorial Tournament
Team GB’s Squad for the Bocskai Memorial Tournament

As they prepare for the all-important Olympic Games on home soil next year, Team GB’s boxing squad are developing well and could well cause a few surprises against the top competitors at this year’s major events.
The young team will enjoy its first taste of international competition this year at the traditionally strong 55th Bocskai Memorial Tournament, for which the coaches have selected eight boxers.
Khalid Saeed Yafai was the youngest British boxing team member at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and, although he did not take home a medal there, the 21-year-old did take silver at last year’s European Championships in Moscow.
Andrew Selby is titleholder at the Bocskai Memorial Tournament in the 54kg class, but after the new weight divisions were launched on September 1, 2024 the young Welshman has moved down to the new 52kg flyweight category.
Luke Campbell became European Champion in home ring in Liverpool more than two years ago but has so far been unable to build on this achievement. Campbell missed the European Championships in Moscow after being replaced by Iain Weaver, who collected a silver medal at the event. He has since trained very hard and struck back at his main local rival at the British National Championships in November.
Liverpool-based Commonwealth Games winner and European Championships silver medalist Thomas Stalker was awarded best boxer of the year in the United Kingdom. It’s worth noting that Frankie Gavin also picked up the same accolade in between two Olympic Games in 2006, after which he won the World Championships in Chicago at lightweight. Thomas Stalker also competes at lightweight.
Bradley Saunders, bronze medalist at the 2007 AIBA World Championships in Chicago, was one of the favorites at the 2009 World Championships in Milan but was seriously injured just before the huge event. He returned at the last edition of Bocskai Memorial Tournament in 2010 and claimed a bronze medal, then took silver at the Commonwealth Games in India later in the year.
The team’s rising welterweight star Callum Smith caused a huge surprise at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year to claim a silver medal in the tournament. Smith also took the British national title in November and will be aiming for the final in Debrecen next week.
Light heavyweight Obed Mbwakongo, 21, put in world-class performances at recent junior and youth events but a medal at elite international level has proved elusive so far. Mbwakongo made the quarterfinals at both the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games but missed the final step for the medal.
AIBA Junior World Championships bronze medalist 25-year-old Daniel Price did not qualify for the Beijing Olympic Games but returns to keep his chances alive for London.

The talented young boxer claimed a silver medal at the Strandja Tournament and the Makar Mazay Memorial Tournament but lost to Zou Shiming in the first preliminary round of the Asian Games.
Popenchenko Memorial Tournament winner 22-year-old Andizhan-based Shahriyor Isakov had great expectations at the Asian Games but was defeated by Commonwealth Games winner Suranjoy Mayengbam Singh of India in the flyweight’s quarterfinal.
The team’s best bantamweight boxer is AIBA President’s Cup winner and Asian Championships silver medalist Orzubek Shayimov, who was gold medal contender at the 16th Asian Games but was unexpectedly eliminated by Zhang Jiawei of China in Guangzhou.
Lightweight Asian Junior Champion Hurshid Tojibayev was the youngest Uzbek boxing team member at the Beijing Olympic Games. At the Asian Games 21-year-old Tojibayev claimed a valuable bronze medal and may be able to make his second Olympic quota this year.
His compatriot Fazliddin Gaibnazarov is only 19 years old but despite his youth he defended his national title in December. Gaibnazarov is also a lightweight boxer and trying to secure his place in the top team.
Sanjorbek Rahmonov became Asian Champion in Zhuhai in 2009 and also claimed a bronze medal at the 16th Asian Games two months ago in the 64kg weight division. Welterweight’s new rising star Uktamjon Rahmonov was called to the Uzbek national team last year before the 16th Asian Games, where he acquired a silver medal after losing his final contest against two-time World Champion Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan.
Two-time AIBA World Champion Abbos Atoyev missed out on his first Asian Games title in Guangzhou after the 24-year-old middleweight boxer was defeated by India’s famous Vijender Singh in the final.
The oldest team member in the team is AIBA World Championships silver medalist Elshod Rasulov, who will be celebrating his 25th birthday in March. Rasulov put in an excellent performance in Guangzhou and defended his Asian Games title.
The team contains a strong heavyweight boxer as well: Makar Mazay Memorial Tournament winner Mirzokhidjon Abdullayev, who celebrated his 19th birthday in December and has great expectations in 2011.
