British Cruiserweight Championship

Camp’s Over, Williams Ready To Take Norton’s Title On The 21st Oct.
On Wednesday evening, at Johnny Eames’ TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, British Cruiserweight title challenger Leon Williams completed the final sparring session of his training camp, for next Friday’s highly anticipated showdown with current Champ Rob Norton at the York Hall in Bethnal Green.
Whilst it’s not unusual for other fighters to catch as much of a sparring session as possible, it is rare for a whole gym of top class fighters, that includes the likes of Frankie Gavin, Erick Ochieng, Billy Joe Saunders, Mitchell Balker etc, and trainers such as Jimmy Tibbs, Mark Tibbs and Bryan Lawrence to halt their training regimes in order to watch the ensuing battles, which in itself speaks volumes of the intensity and quality of the session.
As the bell rang to bring the final round to a finish, the suffocating air of tension that encompassed the gym was shattered by the sound of thirty or so pairs of hands erupting into enthusiastic applause for the sensational performance.
At the very same moment Williams’, as well as co-trainers Johnny Eames and Barry Smith’s, serious expressions broke into beaming smiles, as the knowledge that the job was done and they were well and truly ready dawned on them.
Once the round of congratulations came to an end Johnny Eames just couldn’t hide his contented smile as he said, “We’ve just finished the last twelve rounds of Leon Williams sparring.
He’s sparred with three different big southpaws, who all fought in the style of Rob Norton. To be honest he dusted everyone of them up.
He’s ready, now I can’t wait ‘til fight night, Leon can’t wait ‘til fight night.
I’m really confident and looking forward to the TKO having another British Champion in the house.”
Leon ‘Solid’ Williams versus Rob Norton for the British Cruiserweight Championship headlines the Francis and George Warren’s Queensberry Promotions event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, and broadcast live on BoxNation (Sky Platform Ch. 456), on Friday the 21st October 2011.
Heading up the support card for this battle of the big boys will pitch Cromer, Norfolk’s Ryan Walsh against Melsham, Wiltshire’s Liam Richards for the vacant English Super Bantamweight title.
The stacked undercard also features the UK debut of unbeaten Irishman Dean ‘Irish Lightning’ Byrne, Penge’s unbeaten Welterweight Bradley Skeet,
Croydon Light Welter Danny Davis and the debut of Peckham Welterweight John Garton, all against yet to be named opponents.
Tickets, priced £40 (standard seated) and £60 (ringside) for Williams vs. Norton are available now, either direct from Leon Williams - tickets are also be available at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA and on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com

.
- Gesta wants Luis Ramos fight - After his impressive win over Genaro Trazancos last week in San Francisco, undefeated up and coming lightweight prospect Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (21-0-1, 11KOs) is more than ready to step up the level of competition. Having to face the overmatched Trazancos twice in less than twelve months because of a lack of willing opponents, the southpaw Gesta has a couple of fighters in his sights who he hopes to face off in a ring in the near future.
- Zab Judah vs. Kaizer Mabuza - Ustream, the leader in live online video, and boxing promoter Main Events, today announced that together they will deliver the upcoming Zab Judah vs. Kaizer Mabuza International Boxing Federation (IBF) Jr. Welterweight title fight on Saturday, March 5th as a Premium Ustream PPV broadcast.
- Brähmer – Cleverly postponed - The clash between WBO light heavyweight champion Jürgen Brähmer and interim champ Nathan Cleverly set for April 2 in London could be postponed for undisclosed reasons according to figosport.de. The new date is said to be May 21. The possibility exists that Cleverly might still fight on April 2 with former cruiserweight Enzo Maccarinelli, who would move to light heavyweight.
- Francisco Palacios training video - By Przemek Garczarczyk and Legacy Boxing - On April 2 in Bydgoszcz, Poland, undefeated #1 rated cruiserweight Francisco “The Wizard” Palacios (20-0, 13 KOs) will challenge WBC titleholder Krzysztof “Diablo” Włodarczyk (44-2, 32 KO). “There is only reason Włodarczyk is fighting me – I’m a mandatory challenger, he just has no other choice” – said Palacios. “I’m getting better every minute of my training and will be unstoppable in the ring. Whatever he will try to do, he cannot be prepared for what I will bring – speed, power, agility, you name it, I have it. My training camp is going great and I’m ready to bring a cruiserweight title to Puerto Rico. I want to be as great as our boxing hero Carlos DeLeon.”
.
- Will Mayweather Return To The Ring In July - Making the rounds right now is a strong rumor that says Mayweather could well be fighting again in July, in South Africa. Web site Fight Hype.com broke the story, when Jeff Mayweather spoke to them and confirmed that his nephew is in talks with the daughter of the legendary Nelson Mandela. The giant political figure celebrates his 93rd birthday in July and there is the possibility that Mayweather will fight in South Africa, in a tribute to the iconic figure.
- Klitschko vs. Solis: will HBO pick up this fight - By Jason Kim: For the time being it’s looking like HBO won’t be picking up the March 19th fight between WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko and challenger Odlanier Solis in Germany. The fight will be shown by an obscure premium cable channel called EPIX. That’s a channel that’s not carried by Comcast, and it’s thus the Klitschko-Solis fight won’t be seen by many Americans unless HBO steps up and agrees to buy this fight to show to American boxing fans.
- According to speculation from the LA Times, WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez could be on the verge of leaving his promotional company Golden Boy Promotions to get a shot against Manny Pacquiao. However, Bob Arum, of Top Rank Promotions, is saying he doesn’t want to promote Marquez. But who knows? If Marquez leaves GBP, he would be a free agent like Shane Mosley, who recently went out on his own to get a big mega fight with Pacquiao on May 7th.
- IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko could be potentially pulling out of the Chisora fight for the second time to take a unification mega bout against WBA heavyweight champion David Haye on July 2nd.
- Roy Jones Jr. who’s next - According to the latest boxing news rumors floating around, 42-year-old Roy Jones Jr. (54-7, 40 KO’s) could be facing top cruiserweight contender Denis Lebedev (21-1, 16 KO’s) next.
- Hopkins-Pascal - By Dan Ambrose: Having failed to beat WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal the first time around last December, 46-year-old Bernard Hopkins has been given another shot at trying to beat Pascal by the WBC, who ordered the rematch, and is making Chad Dawson wait a little while longer to get his rematch with Pascal. If Hopkins can’t do it this time, he needs to move on and look for some other fights because he blew it last time out by getting knocked down twice and having to settle for a draw.
- Jose Antonio Aguirre Announces Retirement - By Miguel Rivera - Junior flyweight contender José Antonio Aguirre (35-10, 21KOs), 35-years-old, has announced his retirement from boxing. Aguirre made a decision to leave the sport after failing to win the WBC championship from Gilberto Keb on Saturday in Yucatan, Mexico. Aguirre was stopped in nine rounds. He’s won only two of his last ten bouts since 2005. During the last few years, Aguirre has been plagued by shoulder problems and they continue to bother him. For many years he was one of the best boxers at 105-pounds as the WBC minimumweight champion. He was never able to adapt once moving up in weight to 108-pounds.

Tyson Fury trains with Wladimir Klitschko
Both Wladimir Klitschko and up-and-coming heavyweight contender Tyson Fury spent time with one another training under the guidance of Emanuel Steward recently in their training camp in Austria. Fury had a few words to say about the encounter as he gets ready for an encounter against a TBA opponent on February 19th.
“It was a pleasure and a great honour spending time in camp with Wladimir Klitschko, it’s given me a great deal of confidence training alongside such a champion, he is definitely a fighter who is at the top of his game.”
“Wlad and his brother, Vitali are both modern day heavyweights who are not only very talented and athletic but also big heavyweights.”
“There has been all sorts of speculation flying around why David Haye isn’t fighting one of the Klitschko brothers, but in my honest opinion I believe it’s because David isn’t big enough to deal with the likes of Wladimir or Vitali.”
“But I’m going to change all that in the future, not only am I talented, athletic, have the determination and toughness but also I’ve I got youth on my side, plus I’m also bigger than the likes of the Klitschko brothers as you can see by the photo.”
“When i realise my dream and become unified heavyweight champion of the world I will avoid no one, I’m sure I will be a dominant heavyweight champion just like Lennox Lewis, only I will be representing the UK and Ireland.”
“I’m really looking forward to my next fight which is at the prestigious Wembley Arena on Saturday 19th February, this is going to be a big year for me, I’m going to give boxing the shot in the arm it needs.”

Olympic Boxing: Ukraine
By AIBA
February, 2nd 20011
Ukraine, one of Europe’s top boxing nations, held a training camp led by head coach Dmitro Sosnovskiy and Ivan Danylishin in the picturesque city of Kolomiya from January 8 until January 20.
The 36 best Ukrainian male boxers were involved in the training camp, which was good preparation for the forthcoming international events and for the Ukrainian Men’s Elite National Championships, which will be held in March.
Arguably one of the world’s best boxers, Olympic and AIBA World Champion 22-year-old Vasyl Lomachenko, will be looking to defend his world title in Baku later this year and qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games. Lomachenko missed the European Championships last year but he is ready for golden moments again in 2011. His main local opponent is World University Champion and European Cup winner Denis Berinchik, who also took part in the training camp.
Former European Champion and strong heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk is Ukraine’s second main hope for a gold medal at the upcoming AIBA World Championships. Usyk took bronze in Milan two years ago but did not compete in the 2010 European Championships in Moscow, since the Ukrainian coaches were saving his power for 2011 events.
Experienced bantamweight athlete 28-year-old Georgiy Chygayev became European Champion in Liverpool in 2008 but lost his title in Moscow last year to Eduard Abzalimov of Russia in a close final contest. Chygayev’s main target is to reach his second Summer Olympic Games.
Ukraine’s best super heavyweight boxer, AIBA World Championships silver medalist veteran Roman Kapitanenko, will be celebrating his 30th birthday during the year, but experience is much more important in the highest weight division, which gives him a good chance of continuing his medal series in 2011.
Ukraine’s best welterweight athlete is Taras Shelestyuk, who claimed a bronze medal at the European Championships in Moscow, where the powerful boxer lost to eventual winner Balazs Bacskai of Hungary in a hectic semifinal battle. Shelestyuk’s skills are good enough for an Olympic quota place in Baku.
Former European Junior Champion and European Cup winner 21-year-old Yevhen Khytrov has got great expectations in 2011 and may well be a medal contender at the forthcoming AIBA World Championships. But first he will have to beat Ukraine’s top middleweight boxer, World Championships bronze medalist Serhiy Derevyanchenko.
Ukraine’s top 81kg boxer, European Cup winner and Turkish Prime Ministry Tournament gold medalist Oleksandr Gvozdik, has yet to win a medal in a major event but may well end this drought at the AIBA World Championships in Baku.
