Vitali Klitschko vs. Odlanier Solis

WBC Champion Vitali Klitschko will defend his title against Cuban Odlanier Solis at LANXESS Arena Cologne, Germany, on March 19. Solis is ranked #1 in the WBC and Klitschko’s official mandatory challenger.

Odlanier „La Sombra“ Solis is 30 years old and lives in Florida. He has an impressive amateur fight record of 241 fights and 227 wins. Solis is a three times world amateur champion as well as Olympic gold medalist in Athens 2004. Solis scored a 10th-round disqualification victory against Ray Austin in the title elimination bout in Miami on December 17 to become Klitschko’s mandatory challenger. As a professional, Solis is unbeaten and owns 17 wins with 12 KOs.

39 year-old Vitali Klitschko stands at 41 wins (38 KOs) and just two defeats due to injuries. Klitschko’s knock out percentage is a record- high 92 percent. Vitali Klitschko is the fourth boxer alongside Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis to win a heavyweight belt for the third time. In his last fight, Klitschko defeated former Champion Shannon Briggs in a unanimous decision in Hamburg in October. In Cologne, it will be Klitschko’s 14th World Championship fight.

Vitali Klitschko: “I have heard and read different quotes from Solis saying that I tried to avoid him. This is nonsense. There’s a reason why I’m WBC Champion and I am proud of holding the same title that Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis held. I will show inside the ring that I am the strongest heavyweight champion and I am 100 percent sure I will successfully defend my title. But I know Solis is a very tough opponent and I will not underestimate him.”

Odlanier Solis: ”The Klitschkos seem to think that I am just another opponent like the last tomato cans they cherry-picked so Vitali could easily beat them up. But I am not only the mandatory challenger. I have been the best amateur fighter in the world and I will prove that I am the best professional fighter as well. Klitschko should be afraid to lose his title. I will end his career.”

Bernd Bönte, Managing Director of Klitschko Management Group (KMG): “We are glad we have a signed contract and a go for March 19 in Cologne. Solis is definitely one of Vitali’s toughest opponents. I think it’s a very interesting fight for the audience.”

In Germany, Klitschko vs. Solis will be shown live and exclusively on RTL.

Ticket sales start on January 26 and will be available on www.eventim.de. Prices start at 25 euro.

Solis vs Klitschko Back on Track

News imageSolis vs Klitschko back on track - After harsh words yesterday between the camps of WBC mandatory challenger Odlanier Solis and WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, Solis’ promoter Ahmet Öner wants to get negotiations back on track for the WBC-mandated heavyweight championship fight. - “Let’s forget about Krasniqi, Banks and Sturm,” he said. “They have nothing to do with our fight. I agree that the boxing business is getting harder and harder because there are not a lot of big names and superstars left and they are not easy to deal with. There’s no need to talk about other fighters when all we want is to secure a deal between Solis and Vitali. I apologize for bringing other names to the table. Sturm is a great champion and he is ready to fight any middleweight fighter in the world. It’s not that easy to make big fights when there are only very few big names left and they all have their separate deals in place.

The fighters went face to face at the final press conference. -Hassan N’dam: I saw four fights of Avandtil Khurtshide, and he is nothing but a boxer who imposes his pressure and he knows how to come forward, but he is technically limited. Unfortunately for him Oct. 30, he will be forced to retreat. Avandtil Khurtshide: I have seen several fights of N’Dam, he is talented but his style suits me perfectly. I have not come to France to lose but to take the belt. Hassan has never faced an opponent of my caliber. I do not see how he could resist my pressure for 12 rounds. Here is what he had to say:

On his initial reaction to the news that Andre Dirrell was forced to pull out of the Super Six: — “Well obviously it was shocking news to hear. There are a lot of things going through your mind. You wonder about the state of the tournament, you wonder about Dirrell’s health, and you’re just trying to figure out what’s going to happen. The key for me and my team is to keep the date. That was the key because we didn’t want to not be on the show until next year. We got a semifinals spot and all of that, but that doesn’t do anything for our progress in terms of staying sharp and just staying at it. So we just quickly made a decision to keep the date and to look for a new opponent. It’s unfortunate, and I wish Dirrell a speedy recovery. I want to see him back in the ring doing his thing, and we just have to move on and set our sights on the next opponent.”

Starting off, by saying he agrees with Pacquiao that Margarito had to know his handwraps were doctored. - “You have a fu****g rock in your hand, you know it,” Roach said. — Roach also said, “Against (Daniel) Santos and Paul Williams and so forth, he doesn’t look like he’s that big a puncher. Against (Kermit) Cintron and (Miguel) Cotto, something was different.” -- Roach ended by describing how he had studied six or seven of Margarito’s recent fights. He said he noticed something that really made him think Margarito may have had loaded wraps in some of them. For example: “What is the first thing a fighter wants to do when he’s done fighting?” Roach said. “Take off his gloves. He kept the gloves on the whole fu****g time.” - And which fight was that? Roach was asked. ”The second Cintron fight.” Answered Roach — In that one, Margarito knocked out Cintron in the sixth round in April 2008 in Atlantic City. In their first fight, in April 2005 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Margarito stopped Cintron in the fifth round.

.

  • Haye wants to send Harrison into retirement — This is what Haye had to say on the subject of Harrison and retirement in an interview with the BBC Sport: “I’m sick of hearing of him [Harrison], sick of reading about him, and sick of seeing the sight of him. My plan here is to put Audley once and for all into retirement. My last two fights against Nikolay Valuev, he’s not fought since. He’s looking at retiring. John Ruiz is officially retiring.
