WBF Title Fights in USA and France
NEWS RELEASE – World Boxing Federation a.s.b.l. (WBF)
WBF Title Fights in USA and France on February 24th
Two World Boxing Federation (WBF) title fights will take place on Friday, February 24, as Mike Tiberi faces Toris Brewer for the vacant North American Super Middleweight title in Dover, Delaware, USA, and Thierry Karl and Sandro Siproshvili clash for the vacant International Cruiserweight crown in Saint Quentin, France.
Going for his first professional title, “Mighty” Mike Tiberi, a 23-year-old bright prospect from nearby Wilmington, has racked up an impressive 18-1 (7) record since entering the paid ranks in June 2007. His sole defeat came in his seventh bout to fellow undefeated prospect Dwayne Shelton, dropping a four round decision. Since then he has moved up a weight-class, and hasn’t come close to losing again.
His opponent, 38-yeal-old Toris “The Bull” Brewer, 14-4 (6), could turn out to be the biggest test so far for Tiberi. While the South Carolina-resident is coming off two losses, he has never been stopped and has mixed with better opposition than his younger foe. A real “Prospect vs. Veteran” encounter, the Tiberi vs. Brewer WBF North American Super Middleweight title fight goes ahead at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino, as is the co-feature alongside a Super Featherweight battle between top-contender Juan Carlos Burgos and former world champion Cristobal Cruz.
On the same night in France, at the Palais des Sports in Saint Quentin, former two-time French national champion Thierry Karl will take a crack at his first Cruiserweight belt, the WBF International, when he steps in the ring with Georgian tough-guy Sandro Siproshvili.
Karl, 29-5 (19), holds some excellent wins in lower weight classes, such as stoppages over undefeated opponents Dejan Ribac (16-0) and WBO world title-challenger Nadjib Mohammedi (19-0), but it remains to be seen if he can carry his punching power up to cruiserweight.
In his last fight, this past November, Karl (27) stopped Serbian journeyman Mile Nikolic in the first round, but a seasoned campaigner such as Siproshvili will be a whole ‘nother kettle of fish.
Based in Prague, Czech Republic, Siproshvili, 25-10 (12), has fought some of the best Cruiserweights in Europe. Only stopped in his professional debut, the 29-year old Georgian has gone the distance with former World Champions Herbie Hide and Ola Afolabi, as well as several top-class contenders.
While Karl must be considered the favorite, Siproshvili will definitely be a true test for him at Cruiserweight, and if the Frenchman is not on top of his game he will surely have a hard time winning the fight. On the other hand, if he manages to win inside the distance, and do what Hide and Afolabi couldn’t do, it will be a great measure of what kind of success he may achieve at the new weight.
The Thierry Karl vs. Sandro Siprosvili WBF International Cruiserweight title fight is scheduled for ten rounds, and is presented by Sport Evenements Promotion. Also on the card will be a European Union Super Featherweight title fight between Guillaume Frenois and Hovhannes Zhamkochyan.
USA At 2011 AIBA Men’s World Championships
(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The United States enjoyed a successful start to the 2011 AIBA Men’s World Championships on Monday with both light flyweight Eros Correa (San Jose, Calif.) and heavyweight Joseph Williams (Queens, N.Y.) claiming opening round victories in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Correa was the first U.S. boxer to take the ring in Azerbaijan and he ensured that Team USA enjoyed a victorious start on Monday at the Sport and Exhibition Centre. Correa recorded a 14-11 decision over Jason Lavigilante of Mauritius in their light flyweight opener to advance on to second round action. A few hours later, Williams continued the U.S. winning streak in his bout with Slovakia’s Sandro Dirnfeld, taking a 19-13 decision in their heavyweight contest to join Correa in the second round.
Despite being the youngest member of the team at only 18, Correa set the tone for his United States squad. Correa maintained his composure in his World Championships debut despite falling behind by a 5-4 margin after the first round. He came out charging in the second, giving Lavigilante two standing eight counts in the round to claim an 11-9 lead with three minutes of boxing remaining. Correa refused to relinquish his lead in the final stanza and won a 14-11 decision to move on to second round action. He will face off with 2009 World Championships silver medalist David Ayrapetyan of Russia in his second bout on Monday, October 3.
Williams announced his arrival on the international scene very early in his bout with Slovakia’s Sandro Dirnfeld, flooring his opponent with a thundering right hand in the first minute of the opening round. He kept the pressure on in the first and held a 7-3 lead after the opening three minutes. Williams extended his advantage to a 13-8 margin after the second round and went on to win his international debut by a 19-13 final decision. He will return to the ring in second round action on Monday, October 3 when he takes on Vassiliy Levit of Kazakhstan.
As U.S. flyweight representative, Rau’shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio) received a first round bye, no U.S. boxers will compete on Tuesday. Team USA will take the ring once again on Wednesday as bantamweight Joseph Diaz, Jr. (S. El Monte, Calif.) faces Myanmar’s Kyaw Latt and light heavyweight Marcus Browne (Staten Island, N.Y.) battles Yoshitsuna Okada of Japan.
Following the general weigh in, 570 athletes from 113 countries were entered into the official event draw in Baku. Ninety-two Olympic berths are up for grabs at the World Championships with 10 boxers in the light flyweight through light heavyweight classes and six athletes in the heavyweight and super heavyweight divisions all earning spots in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

‘Phat’ Pat’s Ready To Take Toms Title

Sparring’s Over, ‘Phat’ Pat’s Ready To Take Toms Title on 23rd July
With just over a week to go before the biggest fight of career to date Light Middleweight prospect ‘Phat’ Pat McAleese has more or less completed his preparations with a full on ten round sparring session at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London.
McAleese, who has just the single loss on his fourteen fight record, has left nothing to chance ahead of his showdown with current Southern Area Champion Ryan Toms, as support to the highly anticipated British and Commonwealth Heavyweight title clash between Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury at Wembley Arena on Saturday, 23rd July.
Pat’s manager, Johnny Eames, called upon in-house fighters Billy Joe Saunders, Amro Ezzat, Eddie Corcoran and Freddie Turner, as well as former amateur star turned coach Tony Cesay, to ensure that the Newmarket man was ready for tough southpaw Toms.
Following a cracking ten rounds of sparring, against aforementioned Amro Ezzat, Eddie Corcoran and Tony Cesay, a smiling Johnny Eames said, “Brian O’Shaughnessy is looking after Pat’s preparation for this fight and as Pat said the other day I’m just overseeing things this time.
There’s been a big, big improvement in Pat’s movement and technique. His just completed his second ten rounds with three different fighters, all southpaws, and looked really good in doing it.
I’d like to think that come Saturday 23rd July Pat gets his hand raised up against Ryan Toms.
He’s a tricky southpaw who’s beaten one our boys twice, but I’m pretty certain that Pat’ll pull one back for the TRAD TKO Gym and get our second Southern Area champion of the season on the board and get the gym back on the Championship road.”
Pat’s coach Brian O’Shaughnessy then expanded on Johnny’s comments saying “Everything’s been going fine really. Done ten rounds today, his movement is wicked, his footwork is wicked, everything is going to plan.
We’ve had great sparring here at the TRAD TKO, there’s always plenty of good sparring with house fighters here and we’ve had quite a few of them working with us.
We’ve had Billy Joe (Saunders), Amro (Ezzat), Eddie (Corcoran), Tony (Cesay) and Freddie (Turner) and most of them are southpaw stance as well and those that aren’t took on the southpaw stance, which we are getting used to because of his opponent, it’s all good.
His weight’s well, he’s looking good in the ring, he’s doing all the work he needs to be doing, he’s listening well so it’s all going well.”
Final word on training has to go to the man of the moment himself, ‘Phat’ Pat McAleese, “Yeah training’s gone really well. Done ten rounds sparring today, felt comfortable all the way through and the fitness is there.
Next week just going to do some sharpening up and getting my energy and stamina spot on.
I’m full of energy now, so it’ll be an easy week next week and then I’ll be fit and ready to go on the 23rd.”
Pat McAleese versus Ryan Toms, for the Southern Area Light Middleweight title, is a feature fight on the undercard of Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury’s British and Commonwealth Heavyweight title clash at the Wembley Arena on Saturday 23rd July 2011.
Tickets priced £40, £50 and £150 are available from the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA or call Pat McAleese on 07852 980593
