World Champions, Daniel ”The Jet” Zahra (WKN) and ”Super” Steve Martin (WUMA) will be facing each other in a highly anticipated Middleweight, WKN sanctioned bout for the Malta National K1 Title, which will be the main event on ‘Fight Night’ which is to be held at Stitch Club in San Gwann, Malta on Tuesday 28th June.
During a Press Conference held on Tuesday 14th June at the Shadow Lounge in Paceville, local WKN representative Adrian Axisa presented the two leading K1 fighters to those present and wished them and all those participating the best of luck in what is being billed as Malta’s biggest ever K1 and Kickboxing Nationals. Axisa thanked all those who attended the conference.
Zahra’s coach Master Noel Mercieca said that he believes in Zahra’s potential and this is proven not only by results in the local scene but also by results obtained abroad. Mercieca appealed for assistance from the local authorities and also from the local media to help promote more this sport.
Steve Martin’s coaches, Silvio Camilleri and Scott Dixon were both diplomatic in their remarks and said; that these two fighters were great athletes and that they were sure that both would be giving a hundred percent effort on the day.

Daniel Zahra who will be turning professional in K1 this coming October said “I am really looking forward for this bout against Steve. He is a very good athlete and I respect him for his recent achievements but I obviously am going out to win on the night”.
This event which is being organised by local promoters ‘Gladiators’ will include not less than 11 bouts with the highlight being the final match between Zahra and Martin who come from Wu Shu Ky Kickboxing Club and Ying Yang Kickboxing Club respectively.
Malta’s Fight Event of the Year
The Maltese Kickboxing and K-1 Association have just released the date and venue for the National Championships. This is by far one of the best ever fight cards promoted in the Maltese Islands.

A host of fights and participants were announced recently for Malta’s Largest ever, K-1 and Kickboxing national championships, including a titanic clash between two local world champions and a world title defense by a local female kickboxing athlete.
The event takes place June 28, at ‘Stitch Club’ Tal-Balal, San Gwann, Malta, (doors open at 8Pm) and the night’s lineup guarantees a night of all action entertainment and scores which will be settled between the ropes. .
Confirmed bouts include: WKN world and European champion (Amateur) in K-1 and Kickboxing, Daniel “The Jet” Zahra against WUMA recently crowned world champion, “Super” Steve Martin. This fight in the 70 Kg division, which will be fought under K-1 rules, will have on the line Malta’s first ever national K-1 title at this weight. This fight has all the promise to be a memorable clash of non stop punching and kicking action, as both contenders have had a quite grudge simmering on the backburner for some time.

Co headlining the main event will be the dynamic and all action Maltese fighter, WKN female world amateur kickboxing champion Ruth Tanti, who is to face a TBA opponent. – Tanti who fights in the feather weight division will be defending the title she won from Nuura Mohamed Sayed Ahmed of Egypt, in September 2009.

Another eagerly anticipated fight that has been announced on the main card is the K-1, 75 Kg clash between Ruben Azzopardi and Leonard Tabone.

The evening’s fight card will have no less than eleven title fights and three supporting bouts on the undercard, all fights on the main card will be full contact and the participants all hail from a number of Malta based clubs except for Ruth Tanti’s opponent which will be appointed by the WKN.
More details about this local not to be missed event, participating clubs and bookings will be available in the coming weeks.
WUMA Malta - Results
At the recent WUMA world championships which were held at the Palasport in Alcamo, Sicily, the Maltese kickboxing contingent returned to Malta with some very positive results. The Maltese competed in several categories and divisions in full & semi contact bouts. The complete medal haul of the Maltese Kickboxing athletes was quite impressive:

Malta’s Steve Martin - WUMA World Champion
Malta’s Steve Martin, is the new WUMA Kickboxing world champion (full contact) in the 68Kg category. The WUMA championships are being held in Sicily were WUMA Malta, is being represented by two Maltese martial arts clubs, The WU SHU KY Kickboxing club - of Sensei Silvio Camilleri and Kickboxing Warriors – of Sensei Julian Lee Ritchie.
In the final Steve Martin faced tough Italian champion Giovanni Petrosa. - Malta’s Martin finished the first round 2 points ahead of the Italian but took a six second count in the process after suffering a groin injury. In the second round the Maltese champ got down to the serious business of winning and within 70 seconds took out Petrosa by TKO.
The bout was judged by Loic Delvad ( Swiss) and Lee Palmier (scotland).
Malta also attained runners up positions in some other categories and a full competition report will be published later this week.
