Three-time Women’s World Champion Mary Spencer triumphed over her biggest rival, two-time World Champion Ariane Fortin, at the 2011 Canadian National Championships in Québec.

Spencer competed at 66kg and Fortin at 70kg in 2008 when they claimed their second World Championships titles in Ningbo, China, but the weight classes were changed last year and both boxers moved up into the new Olympic 75kg division.

At the 2010 Canadian National Championships Québec-based Fortin defeated her rival but it was Mary Spencer who was entered for the 6th AIBA Women’s World Championships, she took the title for a third time.

On their re-match Mary Spencer won the hectic and close middleweight battle by 6:3 at the 2011 National Championships in Québec last week, which was attended by AIBA Executive Committee member Mr. Luiz Boselli of Brazil.

Canada’s other female star, three-time Panamerican Champion 23-year-old Mandy Bujold from Ontario, claimed her fourth national title after beating Jackie Lachapelle by 10:1 in the Olympic flyweight class.

In the third Olympic weight class, former champion Sandra Bizier from Québec won the 60kg division, while top favourite titleholder Stephanie Walker missed the final contest and took the bronze.

Melissa Guillemette at 57kg, Susan Haas at welterweight and Melinda Watpool at heavyweight were some of the experienced Canadian women who defended their titles in Québec.

In the men’s light flyweight final Jonathan Quinit and Benoit Fleury - both bronze medalists at the Francophone Games last year - had a great battle in Québec with Quinit from Manitoba taking the gold.

Panamerican Championships silver medalist 21-year-old Kenny Lally was crowned in the flyweight class as expected, while two-time Canadian National Champion bantamweight 27-year-old Joey Laviolette took his third title in Québec.

Ayaz Hussain fought only in his second Nationals in his career and took the final victory in the light welterweight class. National Championships silver medalist 22-year-old Yves Ulysse was included in the Canadian team at the Panamerican Championships and the Commonwealth Games, so it was little surprise that he won the national title in Québec.

Welterweight Mian Hussain was silver medalist at the last edition of the Nationals but he converted this to gold last week. Canadian Youth National Champion 19-year-old Brody Blair managed to win the middleweight division at his first major elite tournament.

National Championships bronze medalist Jonathan Savard from Québec won his first-ever title in the light heavyweight class. Canadian Final Team Selection Tournament winner and Commonwealth team member 30-year-old Samir El Mais took the heavyweight gold, while in Didier Bence’s absence 21-year-old Simon Kean won the super heavyweight division.
