Boxing News - Arthur Abraham - Andre Ward

alt

  • Andre Ward is going to finish off Arthur Abraham — By Scott Gilfoid: The class of the Super Six tournament WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (23-1, 13 KO’s) is going to show no mercy in finishing off a badly beaten and discouraged Arthur Abraham (31-2, 25 KO’s) in their semi-finals Super Six tournament bout. I don’t even see this as being a competitive fight, as Ward is just too too talented and is levels above the short slow and punch limited Abraham. The defeat will send Abraham packing his backs, eliminating him from the Super Six tournament.
  • Uli Wegner threatens to walk out on Abraham — According to reports in Germany, well respected trainer Uli Wegner has threatened to walk out on Arthur Abraham (31-2, 25 KO) - unless the former champion accepts the reality of his recent twelve round decision loss to Carl Froch. Wegner wants Abraham to stop blaming various members of his team for the loss to Froch. He says “King Arthur” needs to accept his role in the Super Six shortcoming or the two men will be forced to go their separate ways.

However Booth claims that Klitschko is refusing to sign the agreement. Booth told the Guardian: “I have been negotiating with Bernd Boente, Wladimir Klitschko’s manager, and two days ago I offered him a 50-50 split of everything, including the British pay-per-view money. altNew British champion James DeGale wants to become a world champion next year. The 24-year-old’s grand plan has always been to challenge at the highest level in 2012. But his one-sided demolition of Paul Smith has persuaded him that he can move up even quicker. - DeGale beat his Liverpool rival in a near-perfect display, eventually stopping Smith in the ninth. - It was just his ninth pro fight, and prompted promoter Frank Warren to suggest DeGale was well ahead of the likes of Amir Khan and Naseem Hamed at similar stages of their careers.

Garth Wood offers “The Man” Mundine rematch

By Craig Watt, Photo: Team Wood

Australian Contender winner Garth Wood (10-1-1, 6 KOs) pulled off one of the biggest boxing upsets in 2010 when he knocked out former three time world champion Anthony “The Man” Mundine (40-4, 24 KOs) with a left hook at the Acer Arena on December 8th. The fight was his prize for winning the Australian Contender show on Fox in January. He confirmed to Fightnews today that he has offered Mundine a rematch for April 2011 with a 50-50 income split.

He stated, “Its all gone a bit quiet from the Mundine camp after we made the offer to give him the chance of a rematch. Initially they wanted a 60-40 split but I refused as it was me who knocked him out, not the other way round. I don’t see why I should earn 40% when I was the victor. A split of 50-50 seems a fair offer to me.”

Leaders Unchanged after Re-matches in Week Four

There was little in the way of surprises to close out the 2010 matches in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) as the top teams in the three regional conferences maintained their positions heading into the end-of-year break.

WSB: Monday, 20 December 2023 - Switzerland, Lausanne

Baku Fires repeated last week’s home win over the Incheon Red Wings and remain top overall as the only unbeaten team in the series. The Los Angeles Matadors also repeated last week’s 4-1 victory over the Memphis Force, while Paris United defeated the Istanbulls 4-1 to remain on top in the European standings.

With a second-straight defeat of the Force, the Los Angeles Matadors have now won 15 of their first 20 bouts and earned 10 points with a 3-1 record. “I’m really proud of my team of coming in here and taking three points,” said Matador head coach Manny Robles. “That’s really important and puts us up in the standings, which is where we want to be. This is the start of a good thing. This is what happens when you work hard.”

The Mexico City Guerreros found comfort at home once again on Friday to break a two-match skid and earn a decisive 4-1 victory over the visiting Miami Gallos. Action at the Centro Banamex resembled that of the Guerreros’ opening night when they trounced the Memphis Force, 5-0, to begin the season. But since then, the Guerreros had not fared so well on the road dropping contests to the Los Angeles Matadors, 5-0, and to the Miami Gallos last week, 3-2.

With the Guerreros returning two winning fighters to center stage for the first time since their season debut along with a 2008 Olympian competing for the first time, the Guerreros would have the upper hand on paper going in and would back that up with their action in the ring throughout the night as well.

Now a third of the way through a 12-week season, all teams will take an 18-day break during the holidays, with week five action not set to reconvene until January 5 with the Memphis Force travelling to Miami to take on the Gallos. That match will be followed with the Mexico City Guerreros hosting the Matadors on January 7.

The Guerreros took bout No. 1 with Elias Emigdio (Zitlala, Mexico) beating Luis Miguel Diaz (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) in the bantamweight division, 49-46, 49-46, 48-47. Emigdio avenged an earlier season loss to two-time Olympian Rau’shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio) by defeating Diaz, now 0-2 on the season.

German debutant Enrico Kolling was the only international boxer in action for the Istanbulls on Friday and the only one to win for his team at the Halle Carpentier as the Paris side dominated the action. The French team continues to dominate the bantamweight division, after Nordine Oubaali dismissed the young Abdullah Dursun with an emphatic win on points by unanimous decision (50-44. 50-45, 50-44) to move up to fourth in the individual rankings. Oubaali’s team mate John Nevin currently tops the ranking with two away wins for Paris.

An equally clear victory for Alexis Vastine at middleweight (50:43, 50-43, 50-45) and technical knock-outs for Rachid Azzedine at lightweight and Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic in the heavyweight contest eased Paris to a 4:1 victory that gives them ten points from four matches.

The Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder team stormed ahead to a 4:0 win against the Moscow Kremlin Bears at the Palasharp on Friday.

The first match saw the debut in the WSB of Vittorio Parrinello, who fought with bravery and intelligence and finally won all the five rounds against the bantam Alisher Mahmudov. “My debut has been like I kept in my mind since this September, when I started the training. I did everything to win this match,” Parrinello said.

World champion Domenico Valentino finished his match in the second round because of an injury on the right eyebrow suffered by Ziyodulla Hadiyaullaev.

The hardest match of the night was Luca Podda’s against David Arustamyan. It was a very balanced match as the split-decision result showed. “In the first two rounds I wasn’t fighting using my full strength but then my coach Francesco Damiani boosted me to the victory. His support is really important for me. I followed his advice and I won”.

With the home victory already in the bag, Bosko Draskovic, the only foreign boxer competing for Milan on the night, entered the ring. The show once again finished early, this time in the first round because of an injury to Denis Tcariuk, leading to the first technical draw of the season so far.

In the last match Clemente Russo faced the very young Islam Ismailov, born in 1990. The leitmotiv of the evening was the flash-match, and once again the bout ended early. This time it was the home boxer Russo who picked up a cut in the third round, but secured the win on points by a unanimous decision.

Boxing in the Mountains

By: Rob Quijano - (Ringside)

December 19, 2023

With the last Boxing event of the year in Puerto Rico, the fans were not disappointed as they enjoyed an early Christmas present with an exciting night of boxing in the mountains of Morovis, Puerto Rico.

In the main… event undefeated prospect Thomas Dulorme picked apart Ramon Sanchez. Dulorme controlled the action utilizing his jab and Sanchez refused to continue in the 2nd round after receiving multiple body shots. In the co-main event Marcos “El Tigre” Jimenez continued his winning ways by 1st round knockout of Ricardo Blackman. Jimenez had no problems in the short fight and dropped Blackman with a devastating body shot. Jimenez is looking forward to a possible title shot in the next year after having recently signed with Miguel Cotto’s promotional company. Former Olympian Carlos Valcarcel won by unanimous decision over a game Jorge Cordero. The two battled it out with Valcarcel landing the harder and cleaner shots. Cordero was saved by the final bell as he appeared out on his feet.

Making the most of their professional debuts were Miguel Marrero, Carlos Narvaez (both former members of the Puerto Rico national team), and George Maysonet (son of retired boxer Jorge Maysonet). Maysonet ended his bout in seconds after Samuel Hernandez could not survive his onslaught. Narvaez came out for a war with Cristian Perez, who was also making his debut. Narvaez won by KO in the 1st round. The hometown kid Marrero destroyed Victor Rodriguez in the 1st round with the 3rd knockdown of the round leaving Rodriguez motionless for several minutes. After being tended to by paramedics, Rodriguez was able to leave the ring on his own while Marrero was overcome with emotion, as he was congratulated by his adoring fans.

In an electrifying match, Emanuel “Bebo” Rivera won an all out slugfest, as he dropped Jose Guardiola once in the 1st round and 3 times in the 2nd. Guardiola exchanged heavy blows but “Bebo” was faster and delivered more crushing blows. In the near upset of the night, undefeated prospect Emanuel “Manny” Gonzalez won by unanimous decision over Pedro Salcedo. Coming in with a record of 3 wins and 4 losses and expected to be an easy fight for “Manny,” Salcedo left his heart in the ring. Heavy blows were exchanged by both with “Manny” being the aggressor throughout. In additional bouts Jose Valderrama destroyed Elvin Gonzalez by TKO in the 1st round and Alexis Padin won by TKO over Luis Ortiz in the 2nd round.

Those in attendance for this night of non-stop action were Promoter Gary Shaw, WBA Super Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto, former champion Carlos “El Indio” Quintana, NY State Featherweight Champ Luis “Orlandito” Del Valle, soon to be title contenders Jonathan “Polvo” Oquendo and Cesar Seda, as well as several amateur prospects.
