The official weigh-in event for UFC 117: “Silva vs. Sonnen” is set to go down TONIGHT (Aug. 6) from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
It is currently scheduled to air LIVE on several online destinations via streaming video. The first fighter is expected to tip the scale at 7 p.m. ET.
“Silva vs. Sonnen” will feature the put-up-or-shut-up middleweight title fight between division champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva and the sharp-tongued Chael Sonnen in the main event of the evening tomorrow Saturday 7th August at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, United States.
Two fantastic showdowns with title implications — Roy “Big Country” Nelson vs. Junior “Cigano” dos Santos and Jon Fitch vs. Thiago “Pitbull” Alves — are also slated to highlight what is another stacked PPV offering from the world’s largest fight promotion.
Terry Etim (14-3) has been scratched from his upcoming lightweight match up against Joe Lauzon (18-5) at UFC 118: “Edgar vs. Penn 2,” paving the way for cake boss Gabe Reudiger to make his triumphant return to the Octagon on Aug. 28 at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dana White — Just over a week or so ago, Dana White was doing a PR appearance at a Dave and Buster’s in San Diego to promote UFC on Versus 2. In the midst of shaking hands and talking to fans, one fan approached Dana and told him that in his excitement to meet Dana, he got a $300 speeding ticket. Upon hearing the news, Dana White opened his wallet and gave the fan $300 to pay off his ticket.
Rising Strikeforce heavyweight star Daniel Cormier
will square off with Jason Riley at the Strikeforce: Houston show on Aug. 21, the promotion has confirmed.
Cormier had originally been expected to fight on a Strikeforce: Challengers card on Aug. 13, but was reassigned.
Last weekend, the two-time U.S. Olympian wrestler earned his third straight win, defeating Lucas Browne at Xtreme MMA 2 in Sydney, Australia. Prior to that victory, the 31-year-old had won his first two fights under the Strikeforce banner.
Strikeforce on Tuesday announced the backup fighters for its first women’s tournament, as well as the official rules for that tournament, which will be held Aug. 13 as part of a Strikeforce Challengers show in Phoenix.
Colleen Schneider and Liz Carmouche will take part in what the promotion is terming a “reserve bout” as part of the 135-pound, four-woman event. The two will fight on the preliminary card. The main card will air live on Showtime.
If one of the four women in the tournament – Miesha Tate, Carina Damm, Hitomi Akano and Maiju Kujala – cannot advance due to injury, the Schneider-Carmouche winner will serve as a replacement.
WEC - The long-awaited rematch between World Extreme Cagefighting rivals Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone is set for WEC 51 on September 30, a major fight card that will demonstrate the WEC’s ability to put on big events.

Nonito Donaire, Fernando Montiel Won’t Fight in Tournament
4th August 2010 - Showtime is reportedly considering a tournament for bantamweights (118 pounds), similar to the “World Super Middleweight World Boxing Classic” featuring six of the premiere 168-pound fighters in the sport in which the WBA and WBC championship belts and an overall crown are on the line.
Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum has been quoted as saying that two of his fighters have elected not to participate — although they have apparently been chosen to be a part of the field.
They are WBO bantamweight (118 pounds) titlist Fernando Montiel and rising WBA interim super flyweight (115 pounds) champion Nonito Donaire of the Philippines, each of whom scored big wins last month.
Citing the plan of Showtime’s Ken Hershman, executive vice president and general manager of sports, ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael reported that the six fighters being considered are Montiel, Donaire, IBF king Yonnhy Perez (20-0-1, 14 KOs), ex-champ Joseph Agbeko (27-2, 22 KOs), IBO titlist Vic Darchinyan (35-2-1, 27 KOs), and prospect Abner Mares (19-0-1, 12 KOs).
Montiel and Donaire are slated to face each other perhaps on Dec. 4 either in Atlantic City, New York’s Madison Square Garden or the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, according to Arum. “They’re going to fight each other and their fight will not be part of the tournament so those two guys are out” said Arum.
