Today – 17th July In a few hours time – Tua vs Barrett
Many of his fans argue that Tua (51-3-1, 43 KO’s) is the best heavyweight boxer never to win a major title, today he continues with his incredibly slow climb to a heavyweight title shot by fighting 39-year-old Monte Barrett on Saturday night at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The 37-year-old Tua’s obscure WBO Asia Pacific and WBO Oriental heavyweight titles will be on the line for this fight.
For Tua, it will be the first fight in the United States in three years since his win over Cerron Fox in July 2007. Tua hasn’t fought a 1st tier heavyweight in seven long years since his fight with Hasim Rahman way back in 2003.
However his fights with lower class boxers have certainly not hurt his carrier, he is currently ranked 2nd in the heavyweight division by the WBO.
The heavy-handed Tua (WBO #2), who is promoted by Gotham Boxing, is unbeaten in his last fourteen contests since dropping a decision to former IBF heavyweight champion Chris Byrd in 2001. Tua is one of the most dynamic punchers in heavyweight history, holding knockout victories over former heavyweight champions, John Ruiz (KO1), Oleg Maskaev (TKO11), Hasim Rahman (TKO10), and Michael Moorer (KO1).
Tua’s last fight was against, Friday Ahunanya in Auckland, New Zealand on the 31st of March, 2010 – which he won by UD.
Barrett’s last fight was against, Alexander Ustinov in Berne, Switzerland - on the 12th December, 2009 - which he lost by UD.
