The host nation competed with three teams: the national A and B squads and a local La Romana selection. The visiting countries were Aruba, which made its debut at the tournament, plus Ecuador, Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico, United States and Venezuela.
AIBA President's Cup silver medalist and Youth World Championships bronze medalist Luis Miguel Diaz advanced to the light flyweight final after beating reigning Panamerican Champion Carlos Quipo of Ecuador in the semi-final but was beaten to the gold by local teenager Juan Gabriel Medina by 10:5.
Former Panamerican Junior Champion, 17-year-old Dagoberto Aguero is one of the biggest hopes for the Dominican Republic in the future and defeated his older compatriot Felix Solano in the flyweight final by an emphatic 6:0.
Another local teenager, Panamerican Youth Championships bronze medalist Juan Yonelvi Medina had a walk-over in the bantamweight final when his teammate William Encarnacion was unable to compete.
The Dominican Republic's best elite boxer Roberto Navarro became Panamerican Champion in June but was defeated by experienced Jorge Luis Nunez on accepted scores in the lightweight gold medal contest. CAC Games bronze medalist Nunez was selected for Dominican Republic's national squad in 2006 but his victory was the biggest surprise at the tournament.
The light welterweight final was a repeat of the 2009 Panamerican Junior Championships between Puerto Rico's Antonio Ortiz and the Dominican Republic's Raul Sanchez, where Sanchez won the gold medal. Ortiz took revenge in La Romana to win the contest by 2:1.
Local La Romana-based Juan Abreu defended his title at the tournament where he outpointed his compatriot Juan Carlos Almonte at the welterweight final.
Cristian Peguero secured a gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in July at the welterweight and claimed a new final victory in La Romana at middleweight where he defeated Costa Rica's No.1 Fabian Carvajal by 2:0.
Jose Soto of Puerto Rico claimed the light heavyweight gold medal after beating Devaun Lee of the United States by 2:0 while reigning Panamerican Champion Julio Castillo of Ecuador was too strong for Puerto Rico's Jose Santiago in the heavyweight division.
Puerto Rico's experienced 26-year-old CAC Games winner Gerardo Bisbal triumphed in the super heavyweight class final over 18-year-old local boxer Manuel De Jesus, who had caused a huge upset in the semi-final by defeating Panamerican Champion Jorge Quinonez of Ecuador.
