Boxing News in Brief for: Brahmer-Cleverly Live on EPIX,Back-To-Back Boxing Shows, Rahman Returns, Andy Lee's Return, Haye’s Childish Behaviour, James DeGale Promises KO, Marquez to get $10 million rematch, Julio "The Kidd" Diaz
Brahmer-Cleverly Live on EPIX
Due to the demand of boxing fans, EPIX, the multiplatform premium entertainment service, will exclusively televise Live to the U.S., the WBO light heavyweight title fight between defending champion Jurgen Brahmer and WBO interim light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly on May 21. The live broadcast, emanating from The O2 in London, will open with the highly-charged grudge match between rivals James DeGale and George Groves, for the British and Commonwealth super middleweight titles, beginning at 4 p.m. ET. EpixHD.com will stream the fights live, beginning at 4 p.m. ET. EPIX had originally announced that the fights would be televised at a later date via tape-delay. - EPIX will once again present the closed-captioned simulcast of the main event on a jumbotron screen in Times Square (Broadway at 44th St.), beginning 5 p.m. ET.
Back-To-Back Boxing Shows
Gary Shaw Productions and DiBella Entertainment will present back-to-back boxing shows on June 10 and 11 the Roseland Ballroom on the weekend of of New York City’s annual Puerto Rican Day Parade with Felix “Tito” Trinidad acting as ambassador and host. Boricua Invasion I will air live on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights, while Boricua Invasion II will be televised live on Showtime on ShoBox: The New Generation.
Borcua Invasion I will feature welterweight KO specialist Kenny “Battlestar” Galarza (14-1, 14 KOs), of Juana Diaz, PR, in the main event against fellow Puerto Rican contender, Irving Garcia (17-6-3, 8 KOs). Topping undercard are welterweight Thomas “Tormenta” Dulorme (11-0, 10 KOs) against former world champion DeMarcus Corley (37-17-1, 22 KOs), and former Puerto Rican Olympian Jose “El Dulce” Pedraza (2-0, 2 KOs) against an opponent to be named.
Boricua Invasion II will feature popular undefeated Puerto Rican featherweight Luis “Orlandito” Del Valle (12-0, 10 KOs) against Dat Nguyen (17-1, 6 KOs), welterweight Vincent Arroyo against fellow Boricua Hector Sanchez (19-1, 9 KOs) and middleweight knockout artist Jonathan “Mantequilla Gonzalez (12-0, 12 KOs) against an opponent to be named. In a special off-TV attraction, unbeaten Gabriel “Tito” Bracero will duke it out with an opponent that will be announced in the coming days.
Two-time heavyweight champion Hasim “The Rock” Rahman (49-7-2, 40 KOs) will headline a card on June 11th at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Mississippi. Rahman will face Willie Herring in a ten rounder topping a six=bout card presented by Prize Fight and Greg Cohen Promotions.
In the co-feature, middleweight Dominic Wade (11-0, 8 KOs) faces Juan Astorga (15-6-1, 10 KOs) in an eight round bout.
Irish middleweight contender Andy Lee' return to the ring on May 18 against respectable veteran Alex Bunema at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, will be broadcast on www.NESportsTV.com online PPV for just $12.99. - Lee (25-1, 19 KO's), a 2004 Olympian for his native Ireland, is trained by the legendary Emanuel Steward and is coming off a career-best win over the previously undefeated Craig McEwan in his HBO debut in March. Not wanting to sit around and wait for a TV date, Lee will face Bunema (31-7-2, 17 KO's) in a 10-round battle for the NABF and NABA Middleweight Championships.
Haye’s Childish Behaviour
WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) refused to sit in the same room as IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) in a recent taping of Sky Sports Ringside much to the amusement of Wladimir. What’s wrong with Haye. This behavior is unbecoming of a sportsman.
Marquez to get $10 million rematch if he beats Pacquiao
If 38-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez defeats WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao in the proposed fight for November, for which Marquez will be receiving $5 million plus an upside of the pay-per-view profits, he’ll then get a rematch with Pacquiao and be paid $10 million for that fight. That’s the contract that Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has offered to Marquez. Marquez is of course accepting the offer.
Unbeaten British super middleweight champion James DeGale (10-0, 8 KO’s) is promising a knockout victory over challenger George Groves (12-0, 10 KO’s) on May 21st at the O2 Arena in London, England.
Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) Lightweight World Champion Julio "The Kidd" Diaz (38-6, 27 KOs) says he's still got plenty left to give boxing before he retires to run his construction company. He will get the chance to prove it today, Friday, May 13, when he meets former WBO Light Welterweight Champion Kendall "Rated R" Holt (26-4, 14 KOs) in a crossroads battle at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California, and live on Friday Night Fights on ESPN3 at 9 pm, EST. The two former champions will serve as the main event of a sensational card put together by Gary Shaw Productions in association with Thompson Boxing.
