Latest Boxing News in Brief – Monday 3rd January for: Griffin vs Mack, Rigondeaux vs. Casey, Zab Judah, Bute vs. Magee, WBA annual convention, Pacquiao vs Mosley, First National US TV Fight Card 2011

 

 

  • Griffinvs Mack postponed - The IBF light heavyweight eliminator bout between Otis Griffin (23-4-2, 9 KOs) and Yusaf Mack (28-3-2, 17 KOs) was postponed. The fight was originally scheduled for January 7 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The contest was postponed due to inclement weather. In fact, the snow was so bad in Minneapolis that three of the fabric panels on the roof of the Metrodome have collapsed - The fight will now take place February 4 at the Sheraton in Bloomington, Minnesota. The winner of the Griffin-Mack eliminator would be in a position to challenge IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (22-0, 18 KOs).

 

  • Rigondeaux vs. Casey -- Interim World Boxing Association (WBA) World Super Bantamweight Champion Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux, arguably the greatest amateur boxer of all-time, is preparing to school challenger Willie “Big Bang” Casey when they square-off March 19 in Dublin. The Guillermo-Casey title fight features a pair of unbeaten boxers headlining a show promoted by Top Rank, Nowhere 2 Hyde Promotions and Dolphil Promotions.

 

  • 33-year-old Brooklyn southpaw Zab Judah, fresh off his IBF eliminator of a points win over the unbeaten Lucas Matthysse, will get the chance to become a four-time “world” champion on March 5th. The former light-welterweight and welterweight champ will face tough South African Kaizer Mabuza for the vacant IBF 140-pound belt.

 

  • Butevs. Magee -- Undefeated IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (27-0, 22 KO’s) will be making his 7th title defense on March 19th against Irish opponent Brian Magee (34-3-1, 24 KO’s). Magee is ranked number #8 by the IBF.

 

  • Thailand wants to host the WBA annual convention -- According to MuaySiam Soccer Today, the president of Galaxy Boxing Promotion, Mr. Niwat Laosuwanwat, during an interview with Thai reporters at the celebration dinner for his Legends of WBA award winner and WBA World Minumumweight titlist, Kwanthai Sithmorseng; aka K. Chor Na Pathalung on January 2nd said that he has big plans in 2011. Top of the list in his ambitions program is for Thailand to host the 90th WBA annual convention in November.

 

  • First US TV Fight Card 2011 - Las Vegas will host the first USA fight card of 2011 on Friday at the Cox Pavilion on the campus of UNLV. Featured fighters on the card, which will also be the first nationally-televised boxing event of 2011, will host a free public workout on Tuesday beginning at noon at Findlay Toyota located in nearby Henderson. The card features junior welterweight Ruslan Provodnikov (17-0, 11 KOs) vs Mauricio Herrera (15-1, 7 KOs) in the main event, with 2008 Olympian Demetrius Andrade (11-0, 8 KOs) facing Alberto Herrera (7-0-1, 5 KOs) in an eight-round middleweight co-feature. The Herreras are brothers who hail from Riverside, Calif.

 

  • 2008 Olympian for Puerto Rico Carlos Negron (10-0, 7 KO’s) reportedly will be moving up from cruiserweight to campaign at heavyweight. Negron has been fighting at cruiserweight since turning pro in 2009. The 6’6 Negron said he will weigh about 215 pounds when he meets an opponent to be named. The Negron team plans five fights in 2011 with one of them being for a regional title that would get him a world ranking.

 

  • Pacquiao vs Mosley  -- Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum speaking with the Manila Bulletin, has outlined big plans for Manny Pacquiao's upcoming defense of the WBO welterweight crown against "Sugar" Shane Mosley. Arum, vowed to make Pacquiao-Mosley the "greatest boxing show ever.” The card takes place on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Arum refused to disclose the details of his plan to the paper.
