Boxing News in Brief: Friday July 15th for: Canelo Alvarez vs Alfonso Gomez, Kaliesha West joins HG Boxing, Escobedo vs Hernandex – July 16, Zab Judah vs Amir Khan – July 23, Chisora vs Fury – July 23, Wach and Bride – July 29

  • Canelo Alvarez vs Alfonso Gomez

According to Alfonso Gomez himself (via his Facebook page) and Boxrec.com, it will be the former “Contender” star who will be the next challenger for WBA 154-pound champ Saul Alvarez. The date being spoken of is September 17th; the venue The Staples Centre in L.A. September 17th is of course the night superstar Floyd Mayweather Junior will return to the ring, against reigning WBC welterweight ruler Victor Ortiz, and there has been talk of both cards being available to fans on a Pay-Per-View basis. With Erik Morales also fighting on the Mayweather-Ortiz “Star Power” card (against Britain’s Anthony Crolla), it will be some night if fans get to see all three big fights. (James Slater)

  • Wach and Bride – July 29

During Thursday’s press conference in Boston’s “The GreatestBar,”, undefeated 6’8 heavyweight contender Mariusz Wach faced his biggest foe when he met 6’6 Kevin “The Clones Colossus” McBride for the first time. Both of them will meet again – for real this time – on July 29 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The 10-round heavyweight fight for the WBC International title will be the co-featured bout in “Heat Wave,” which is presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports and Global Boxing.

  • Escobedo vs Hernandex – July 16

In an IBF featherweight elimination bout, Mexico City’s Eduardo “Canilla” Escobedo (31-3, 22KOs) will once again face Joksan “Torito” Hernandez (22-3, 14KOs) of Ensenada, Mex, on Saturday night from the Olympic Coliseum located at the University of Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mex. The twelve round main event headlines the “Puños de Hierro (Fists of Steel)” fight card presented by HG Boxing. The contest will mark the two Mexican warriors face each other. The first time back in January of 2010, Escobedo was awarded a unanimous decision over the always tough Hernandez with scores of 97-93, 97-92 and 96-93.

  • Zab Judah vs Amir Khan – July 23

IBF light welterweight champion Zab Judah (41-6, 28 KO’s) expects his huge experience and skill advantage to be too much for WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (25-1, 17 KO’s) in their important unification clash on July 23. Judah acknowledges that the 24-year-old Khan is a very skilled fighter with fast hands. However, Judah sees himself as having superior skills and Khan to be to inexperienced to be able to handle in this fight.

  • Chisora vs Fury – July 23

British and Commonwealth heavyweight Champion Dereck “Del Boy” Chisora (14-0, 9 KOs) puts his belts on the line Saturday night, July 23 against undefeated challenger Tyson Fury (14-0, 10 KOs) in the 12-round main event at Wembley Arena in London.

  • Kaliesha West joins HG Boxing

WBO bantamweight champion Kaliesha “Wild Wild” West (13-1-3, 4 KOs) has signed with Hector Garcia of HG Boxing.  She will make her debut with HG Boxing on August 20th in the semi-main event which is headlined by former WBA super featherweight champion Juan Carlos Salgado battling mandatory challenger Argenis Mendez for the vacant IBF super featherweight title.
