EBU championship --  On October 28th, welterweights Enrique Gutierrez (10-4, 8 KOs) and Dashon Johnson (11-2-3, 3 KOs) will square off at the San Manual Casino in San Bernadino. The 8 round main event is for the EBU championship and will be promoted by Patrick Ortiz and Ringside Ticket. The fight show cases the hard punching Gutierrez against the speed and athleticism of Johnson and will be an entertaining contest between two very determined California fighters.   • Brian Minto Returns -- Recent cruiserweight title challenger Brian Minto (34-4, 21 KOs) will take on Cory Phelps (13-6-1, 7 KOs) on October 29th at the Ghost Riders’ Entertainment Complex in Butler, Pennsylvania. In his most recent fight, Minto put up a brave effort while losing to WBO world champion Marco Huck in his cruiserweight debut last May. Prior to that fight, Minto campaigned exclusively as a heavyweight earning noteworthy wins over former title challenger Axel Schulz and Vinnie Maddalone. Zsolt Erdei vs. Samson Onyango on November 20th -- WBO light heavyweight and WBC cruiserweight champion Zsolt Erdei (31-0, 17 KO’s) will be coming off of a one year retirement when he takes on Kenyan Samson Onyango (20-6, 13 KO’s) on November 20th in an eight round bout on the undercard of the WBC middleweight clash between champion Sergio Martinez vs. Paul Williams at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

 

  • Matt Macklin has distanced himself from facing British rival Darren Barker. The pair were supposed to meet for the European title on September 18 in Birmingham. -- But Barker pulled out injured, leaving Macklin to pick up the vacant title. Now Macklin will defend his belt on December 11 in Liverpool at the Echo Arena. -- His next fight was announced at the same time the European Boxing Union again called for purse bids for a Macklin-Barker clash. But the Brummie and his promoter, Frank Warren, now appear to be looking beyond Barker.

"It's a fight that I wanted, and I don't want to rule it out, but there is a chance that it might not happen now," said Macklin. -- "I don't know if Darren is waiting for me to a win world title so that he can get a crack at me then, but he's got to do more to earn a chance than just hanging around."

One option for Macklin would be to make his European title defence in Liverpool, vacate, and then hope to get a world title shot in 2011. -- Warren added: "I'm in the business of putting on fights for guys who want to fight, and that's why Matt's on my show in Liverpool. -- "It's not about Macklin-Barker at the moment. I don't even know if Barker is fit to fight. It's all about Matt Macklin and whether he can win a world title."

 

  • Manny Pacquiao -- Top Rank promoter Bob Arum isn’t impressed with what he sees of his number #1 fighter Manny Pacquiao after traveling to the Philippines and watching how listless Pacquiao looked during his training session. After briefly trying to put a positive spin on it, Arum came out with this today in an article at Philstar.com: “What I watched Manny on Saturday, I didn’t see the kind of speed that he would need to beat Margarito. If the fight happened on Saturday Margarito would win the fight.”

 

  • Super bantamweight Ricardo "El Maestrito" Córdoba says his career is on the line as he continues to train for what he is calling "the biggest opportunity of my career." Cordoba will meet a fighter regarded as the greatest boxer in the history of the amateurs, two-time Olympic gold medal winner Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba. -- The fight is going to take place on the huge event at Cowboys Stadium on November 13, headlined by Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito. The interim title of the WBA will be on the line. Cordoba has left for Miami, Florida to finish his training camp.

 

  • Michael "Lil Warrior" Franco -- After a nine month hiatus undefeated Featherweight powerhouse Michael "Lil Warrior" Franco will finally lace up his gloves to face off against Adolfo "El Terror" Landeros (20-15-1,9KO) in a bout scheduled for eight rounds at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in San Diego, California on Friday October 22nd, 2010 .This event will be televised live on the popular Spanish language network Telefutura.

 

  • March 2011 Doubleheader In Works -- According to The Montreal Gazette, HBO are very much interested in televising another doubleheader from Canada featuring Lucian Bute and Adrian Diaconu. The two Canadian heroes won with something to spare this past Friday in Montreal - with IBF 168-pouhnd king Bute stopping a game Jesse Brinkley in the 9th round, and former WBC light-heavy champ Diaconu winning a lopsided decision over the always-tough Omar Sheika.

The former professional footballer is chief support as Liam Walsh tackles Maxwell Awuku for the Commonwealth super-featherweight title and he will look to become the first man to legitimately stop domestic gatekeeper McDonagh, who has heard the final bell in all but one of his fights, The only time he did not, he was stopped on an injury against Giuseppe Lauri. -- Back in February, McDonagh dropped a points decision against Gavin over six. -- And with Woodhouse hot on the heels of the 2007 amateur world champion, Saturday is the perfect opportunity for him to state his credentials ahead of a possible future showdown.

 

  • DiBella inks Erdei -- Unbeaten former WBO light heavyweight and cruiserweight champion Zsolt Erdei (31-0, 17 KOs) has signed with DiBella Entertainment. Erdei, a 2000 Olympian for Hungary, previously campaigned mostly in Germany under the Universum banner. He held the WBO light heavyweight title for nearly six years before moving to cruiserweight where he won the WBC belt, which he vacated just weeks later. Erdei will fight on the Martinez-Williams undercard.
