Adamek and Cunningham Battle for #2 IBF Position

on NBC Network Show

December 22nd - Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem

TOTOWA, NJ - October 18, 2012 - The highly anticipated re-match between former world champions Tomasz "Goral" Adamek and Steve "USS" Cunningham took on added significance, yesterday, when the IBF informed promoters Main Events and Ziggy Promotions that the winner would be in line for a shot at IBF Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko. The fight will be televised December 22nd on NBC network TV, the broadcast will begin at 4PM ET.

IBF Championships Chairman Lindsey Tucker informed the promoters that the fight would be for the #2 position in the IBF ratings and that the winner would be ordered to fight #1 contender Kubrat Pulev of Germany for the right to be Klitschko's next IBF Mandatory opponent. In addition, the organization also has sanctioned the 12-round bout for Adamek's IBF North American Heavyweight Title.

"The IBF has granted formal sanction approval for the IBF Heavyweight Voluntary Eliminator fight for the #2 position between Tomasz Adamek and Steve Cunningham," noted Tucker in a letter dated Sept. 17th. "The winner will become #2 and must meet #1 or the leading available contender to establish the mandatory challenger." Kubrat Pulev KO'd Belarusian giant Alexander Ustinov on September 29th in Hamburg, Germany in the first bout of the four-man box-off to earn the #1 position. Therefore, it is presumed that Pulev will face the winner of Adamek-Cunningham II in 2013.

"The IBF's sanction of this fight as part of a heavyweight eliminator adds even more significance to this tremendous bout," promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events, said. "Both Adamek and Cunningham need to win this fight in order to advance toward an eventual title challenge. This match already promised to be an "all or nothing" war. If it is possible, this decision by the IBF has raised the stakes even higher when boxing returns to afternoon free TV on NBC on Saturday, December 22nd."

The fight is promoted by Main Events and Ziggy Promotions in association with Peltz Boxing. Ticket info will be announced shortly.
